Ele's Place Partnership
Again this year, Heritage will be partnering with Ele’s Place, a healing center for grieving children and teens, to bring you an 8-week grief support group. This group will be offered during the school day, once a week for 8 weeks, here at Heritage. The group is designed to help students who have experienced the death of someone significant to them. In Ele’s Group, there will be the opportunity to do activities, talk about grief experiences; learn ways to cope and to be with others who understand what it’s like to have someone die. This group is not therapy or counseling, it is a way to connect with other students who are grieving and support each other. Groups will be facilitated by an Ele’s Place staff member and social work staff (Stacey Williamson-Carotta and/or Joel Benedek) from our school. If you have additional questions, please talk with Megan DeGrand/Cameron Cochran.
*Note: If your child has been identified as benefiting from this group, the classroom teacher will be in touch.
November SEL Focus
Dear Families,
We are excited to share that over the next few weeks, our Social Emotional Learning (SEL) program will focus on developing social awareness in our 4th and 5th graders. This is a crucial aspect of SEL, as it helps students understand and appreciate others' feelings and perspectives, fostering a more empathetic and inclusive school community.
Focus Areas:
1. Social Awareness:
We will introduce students to the concept of social awareness, helping them understand the importance of being aware of others' feelings, needs, and perspectives. This awareness is key to building positive relationships and creating a supportive environment.
2. Empathy:
Students will learn about empathy and its role in connecting with others. We will discuss what it means to feel empathy, recognize it in themselves and others, and how they can show empathy through their actions and words.
3. Perspective-Taking:
We will engage students in activities that encourage them to "stand in someone else’s shoes." By exploring different perspectives, students will practice understanding how others might think and feel in various situations. This helps build compassion and reduces conflicts.
How You Can Support at Home:
Encourage Empathy: Talk with your child about times when they might have felt misunderstood and how it made them feel. Encourage them to consider how others might feel in different situations.
Model Perspective-Taking: Share examples from your own life where you had to understand someone else’s point of view. This helps your child see how perspective-taking is used in everyday life.
Read and Discuss Together: Read books or watch movies that feature diverse characters and situations. Discuss the characters' feelings, choices, and perspectives to help your child practice empathy and perspective-taking.
Practice Reflective Listening: Encourage your child to listen carefully when others speak and reflect back what they heard to ensure understanding. This shows respect and fosters a deeper connection.
Thank you for your continued support in helping our students grow emotionally and socially. Together, we can nurture empathy, compassion, and understanding in our children, making our community a more caring place for everyone.
Warm regards,
Justice Manchester, LLMSW

Hornets Helping Hornets
Every once in a while, a Saline Area Schools family needs just a little bit of extra help. When that happens, we want to make it easy for other families to fulfill that need without knowing who the need is for. These needs will include such things as coats, boots, snacks, gas cards, lunch money, etc...
To learn more and view the needs, simply sign up to be on the weekly email distribution list here. This is a very easy way to help out fellow SAS community members!
Thank you for caring about our Saline Area Schools families! Questions? You can reach us at salinehornetshelpinghornets@gmail.com.
