Weekly North Hills Update
Notes from North Hills
August 30, 2024
North Hills Families,
North Hills Elementary Back to School Night will take place next week, on Wednesday, September 4th. This evening is an opportunity for parents and guardians to meet their child’s teacher and to learn about the upcoming school year. Teachers will present grade-level academic information and various items specific to their classes.
For your convenience, we have divided the evening into two sessions to prevent classroom overcrowding and ensure ample parking at North Hills:
· Session 1 (Last names beginning A-L) 6:30-7:15 PM
· Session 2 (Last names beginning M-Z) 7:15-8:00 PM
Each session will begin promptly at 6:30 or 7:15 respectively.
If you have multiple children at North Hills, please feel free to attend both sessions.
The evening is designed in a presentation style, so it is important that you arrive on time for your respective session. This particular evening is designed as an educational session for parents and is not necessarily intended for students. We kindly ask guardians to attend with us on this evening.
We look forward to seeing you next week,
Scott Billig
Principal

North Hills News
North Hills Secretaries
North Hills Elementary congratulates Mrs. Chris Fidler on her retirement from the Central York School District. Mrs. Fidler has served as secretary of North Hills for three years, and prior to us, she was in the Sinking Springs office since the school opened in 2001. We are truly grateful for her ever positive attitude and commitment to sharing North Hills PRIDE with all families, students, and staff. Today is her last at at North Hills, and we wish her the best as she moves on to her many adventures in retirement!
We would also like to welcome Mrs. Kara Tate as the new North Hills Elementary secretary. Mrs. Tate comes to us with some great experiences and we look forward to having her on the North Hills Team. Mrs. Tate will most likely be the staff member who greets you when you call into North Hills Elementary at extension 1803, so please feel free to welcome her to the North Hills Community!
A Message from the North Hills School Counselors
Dear Panther Family,
The school year is already underway, and it is going to be an exciting one. As your School Counselors, we have a lot planned for our students, and we would like to start off by telling you a little about ourselves and our duties.
North Hills has two counselors:
Jane Goodrich, who will be working with students A-Li. Jane has a Master’s degree in School Counseling from West Chester University. Jane has worked with us in the past as a School Based Therapist and has already had the pleasure of working with many of our staff and students. She is thrilled to be a part of our Panther Family!
Kristen Quichua, will be working with students Ll-Z. Kristen has a Master’s degree in School Counseling from McDaniel College. She has been a school counselor for 8 years in York County working with students in grades K-12. She is excited to work with the North Hills team and get to know students and staff!
Our Duties:
School Counselors in Pennsylvania have very specific roles. Our duties include classroom guidance lessons, small group and brief individual counseling, as well as consultation with parents, teachers, and administrators. While counselors never discipline students, we can assist with positive behavior strategies. Our goal is for each student to develop socially, emotionally, and academically. It is of utmost importance to ensure all students have a safe and positive environment in which each child can learn and grow.
School Counselors work with students on social skills, peer relationships, divorce, anger, college/career preparation, anxiety, friendship, grief/loss, and many other important concerns. Along with our School Social Workers, we can assist our families in times of hardship, as well as with clothing and food needs. As a group, we are dedicated to helping each child succeed in school, home, and in their communities.
Please contact us if we can be of any assistance.

Elementary Musical Opportunities
Over the first few weeks of school, students are encouraged to consider participating in the North Hills Band, Orchestra, or Chorus. Thursday, all 5th graders were introduced to the musical instrument options of the North Hills band, when members of the high school marching band visited to showcase instrument options. Please ask your 5th grader about this event, and encourage them to consider joining. Students were provided an information packet about joining the band. If you need an additional copy, please reach out to the North Hills Office.
CYSD Device Protection Plan
Central York School District offers optional protection plans for your child’s District issued devices.
The protection plan fully covers your child’s device for any accidental damage that occurs. The cost is $25 per year for iPads and $60 per year for Macbooks.

Educational Trips
The Central York School District recognizes that occasionally students may have the opportunity to participate in pre-planned trips and educational experiences during the regular school year. These trips are permitted under State Board of Education regulations as long as certain conditions are met and the educational experience is designed to provide the student with broadening understandings of social, cultural, educational or geographic values and concepts.
The process for approval begins with a written request of the parent on a District form. This form must describe the educational value of the trip in sufficient detail that a judgment can be made regarding the educational value as part of the approval process. Students are responsible for securing the initials of each of their teachers at the secondary level and their classroom at the elementary level before submitting the form for consideration. Forms must be submitted to the school office with all information completed before the trip. No trips will be approved retroactively. The student will also be required to secure and complete all classroom assignments, which occur during the absence.
You may access the trip form via the link below:

Volunteering at Central York
The District’s new Volunteer Registration Portal is now live and parents/guardians/families may register to volunteer for this school year.
The District utilizes a new volunteer registration process within School Gate Guardian, our current visitor management system, to streamline the registration process and efficiently track, maintain, and check in volunteers throughout the school year. With this online registration process, there is no longer a requirement to complete paper packets or drop off paperwork at the District Office.
Prospective volunteers can check their status in the portal after uploading necessary clearances and will receive an email notification when they are approved. Please note that returning volunteers will be required to upload their active clearances within the portal to place them on file in the new system. Please allow up to one week for processing.
Volunteers will receive a self-expiring printed volunteer sticker during each visit upon check-in at the office.
