Message from Mr. Barnes
Gator Families
We are heading into the home stretch. One quarter to go, and we will finish the year out strong. 4th quarter is filled with state testing, celebrations, events, and most importantly instruction that will lead to success in the upcoming grade level.
Please take time to review your child's grades, attendance, and progress with them upon receiving their report cards. Help your child to establish goals for the 4th quarter and continue to encourage him/her to do their very best each and every day.
I am proud of the accomplishments of our students and their daily displays of respectfullness, responsibility, and relentlessness. Thank you for all of your support and don't hesitate to reach out if I can be of any support.

Title I Family Engagement Feedback
April Farm to School Newsletter
We have GREAT news!! For the past 6 months, the FCPS Farm to School Program has been offering fresh, locally grown produce to 37 schools. Starting in April we are expanding our program to all FCPS schools!! We are grateful for the success of our program this year! It is all because of the hard work of the Food and Nutrition Service staff and of our local farmers who want this to be a success!
The Harvest-Curly Kale
Kale is a dark green-leafy vegetable that provides many health benifits. It is recommended for children ages 9-12 eat 1.5 cups to 2 cups of these vegetables each week. Kale is high in fiber, a good source of potassium, calcium, and iron. Kale is also high in Vitamin C, E, and K, selenium and beta-carotene. All of these nutrients have a roll in regulating blood presure, support the immune system and bone health. Kale has a peppery flavor that tends to be bitter, but with a lingering sweetness.
Curly Kale will be offered in the Cafeteria at the end of April
MCAP
MCAP testing is fast approaching. MCAP assesses students in grades 3rd, 4th, and 5th on their reading, writing, and mathematical skills. These assessments are very important as they measure not only a student's success on grade level content but also our school's performance. We want to be the best and I simply ask that students give their best. Please encourage your child to use their time wisely, get a good night's rest, show up to school on time, and be ready to show what they know.

Quarter 3 Awards
Quarter 3 Awards will take place in the classroom. Unfortunately due to the schedule, testing, and when report cards will be issued we will not be able to have a school-wide event. Mrs. Kessler and I will join each child to celebrate their quarter 3 accomplishments in each of the classrooms.
Jacky Joumo Talent Show
Please join us on April 25th from 5:30 - 7:00pm at Governor Thomas Johnson High School in the Auditorium for our Jacky Joumo Talent Show. We will have many talented student performers and maybe some staff cameo appearances. Tickets will be $2 and all benifits will go to the arts program at GTJHS.
Jacky would have been a 5th grader this year but we suddenly lost her over the summer due to a health related issue. Jacky was full of life, smiles, and loved to sing and dance. This event is in memory of her and we would love to celebrate with our entire school community.
Front Office Reminders
- If a family has an unexpected financial change, in their income, they can apply for FARM (Free/Reduced Meals) any time throughout the year at https://linqconnect.com/main.
- If at any time during the school year you experience a change of income and would like to fill out an application for Free/Reduced Lunches, please reach out to Mrs. Arnold at andrea.arnold@fcps.org and she will be happy to assist you.
- In order to help get lost coats/jackets back to the students, please practice putting your child's name on an inside tag so they can be returned to them.
- Please refrain from picking up your child from the front office after 3:15. Classes are preparing for dismissal and busses are arriving after 3:15. After that time please use the car rider line, around back, for pick up.
- Dismissal Changes: Please call before 3:00, when possible, to make changes your child's normal dismissal routine.
- Our doors open at 8:45am and students should be in their classroom by 9:15 when the bell rings. Being in the classroom before the bell rings allows the students to prepare themselves for the day, eat breakfast if they choose to and socialize with their classmates.
- 9:12 Car Riders must report to the front of the building
