Pathways to Adulthood

This one-day training will help you prepare for your child with a disability’s life after high school. Parents will learn how to plan NOW for quality of life in the areas of work, at home, medical services, friendship, and supports, as well as have the opportunity to develop short-term and long-term goals, and the steps to carry them out.

Challenging behaviors may often disrupt the learning environment for students with Autism Spectrum Disorder. When typical behavior programs do not work and the behavior continues, what do you do? This training addresses how to assess the challenging behaviors to better identify the core issue. You will then learn the strategies and tools that can support a positive
learning environment.

Parents will learn requirements needed for students receiving special education services in Texas to graduate. In this training, we will take an in-depth look at the law and cover the graduation plans Texas currently has in place to graduate from high school.

Connecting the Math in School to the Math at Home (Grades 3-5)
Building students’ confidence in critical thinking of questioning in grades 3-5 is crucial to capture their mathematical success. Participants will engage in instructional strategies that develop their understanding of questions and learn ways to assist parents in making connections that can help them with their child(ren) at home.

Parenting in the Digital Age
Our children’s access to technology can both empower and endanger them. Come to this training to learn what to look out for as parents in your child’s digital interactions. What is reasonable in usage? How do you find out about apps, games and websites? Should children and teens have social media accounts? How should you handle cyberbullying? You will leave this training with practical advice and tools to assist you in your role as a 21st Century parent!

Claudia Vargas was born in San Antonio, TX. Both her parents and siblings emigrated from Mexico a year before she was born, thus Claudia proudly considers herself a first-generation American. Having more than 20 years of experience in education, her work has focused on enhancing Bilingual/ESL programs, instruction and leadership.
She is proud to be bilingual, bicultural and biliterate. Having attended San Antonio ISD's public schools, Claudia graduated from Lanier HS as Valedictorian. She got her B.A. in Latino Studies from Dartmouth College and later her Master's in Education Leadership from UTSA. Her passion lies in educating our future generations and ensuring that ALL students receive equitable access to the educational system. She hopes to bring these strengths to continue growing the understanding that our educational communities must empower our families to empower our students.
