It will provide parents with actionable strategies to improve their relationships with their children, ultimately promoting a nurturing environment that values understanding and respect.
This event is hosted by the CVUSD's BreakThrough Student Assistance Program and The Conejo Schools Foundation, and will be led by presenter Dr. James Jenkins.
Growing in Excellence: Elementary Teachers Complete Science of Reading Trainings
The CVUSD is focused on implementing best practices to support students' success in the classroom. Starting in November, our Instructional Services team hosted three different Science of Reading sessions for all of the District's kindergarten and first grade teachers to complete. The Science of Reading is a body of research that incorporates insights and research from disciplines that include developmental psychology, educational psychology, cognitive science, and cognitive neuroscience. In short, the Science of Reading has demonstrated the methods that best help children learn to read, from the earliest steps in spoken language to being able to successfully decode unfamiliar words.
The goal of this professional development training was for our CVUSD teachers to gain a general understanding of the research behind the Science of Reading and how our brains learn to read. An overview of the importance of phonological awareness and phonics and how explicit, systematic instruction can help all children as they learn to read was provided. Teachers walked away from these trainings with simple, easy-to-implement classroom routines in phonology, phonemic awareness, learning sight words, phonics, and spelling using our adopted Wonders ELA curriculum and other free supplemental resources.
A big thank you to our Instructional Services team for leading this professional development and to our dedicated teachers for their engagement and successful completion of this training!
A big congratulations to our Conejo Valley High School, announced last week as a 2025 Model Continuation High School from the California Department of Education! CVHS is one of 74 schools in the state to receive this recognition for their innovative approach to instruction and for helping students who have faced challenges get back on the pathway to learning.
More than that, CVHS also provides a caring community with support from dedicated teachers, staff and administrators to enhance student learning and build strong school connections.
Conejo Valley High School last received the Model Continuation High School distinction in 2022. Model Continuation High Schools maintain their designation for three years.
The Model Continuation High Schools were selected based on a comprehensive application process that included submission of detailed narrative statements describing specific aspects of school operations and how these were exemplary and the use of assessment tools and data to support continuous improvement. The process included a peer review panel and on-site visit. Conejo Valley High School and all 74 schools selected as Model Continuation High Schools will be recognized at the CCEA Plus 2025 State Conference in San Diego in April.
Way to go, Dragons! Click here to learn more.
