What We're Reading: VPL Book Chats
You know that a few weeks ago I read 'Before We Were Yours' by Lisa Wingate, and I learned that many of you had read it as well! I needed to know more about the victims and adoption scandals. As an adoptee myself, I could relate to the emotions and feelings of these older adoptees wanting to know their history, where they came from, and possible medical concerns that could be passed down to future generations. 'Before & After: The Incredible Real-Life Stories of Orphans Who Survived the Tennessee Children's Home Society' was written by Judy Christie and Lisa Wingate. Once people got ahold of 'Before We Were Yours' it became a bestselling novel and some of the remaining victims of Georgia Tann read it as well. One survivor was brave enough to reach out to Lisa Wingate and request a gathering for the people that were adopted to share their own stories and to possibly connect to people and/or family members that they may or may not have known about. This book takes you on the journey of 15 adoptees' real-life stories and how these victims were able to come together for an emotional weekend. If you liked 'Before We Were Yours' you would definitely enjoy this one!
Anastasia Allen is a fierce, dedicated, and competitive figure skater at UCMH, determined to make it into the Olympics. Every day, every meal, every practice session, is carefully planned with precision. Until she starts to fall for the captain of the hockey team, Nathan Hawkins. Both have aspirations of making it pro, but they cannot deny their mutual attraction. *WARNING* THIS BOOK IS SPICY! 10/10 on the spicy meter. I really enjoyed this book. The story is easy to follow. The characters are extremely endearing and loveable. I've seen this book advertised on Booktok (with unfortunately tons of negative reviews). But I loved it. 10/10 would definitely recommend.

This weekend I read Willy Vlautin's lastest novel 'The Horse.' It is a sorrowful yet inspiring homage to the pain that often precedes truly great song lyrics. It appeals to me as both a reader and a music lover. Ann Patchett provides this praise: "Willy Vlautin writes about people overlooked by society and overlooked by literature. In "The Horse," he tells the story of a tenderhearted man who has a steady talent and a crushing addiction. It is both a work of extraordinary compassion and a really great novel."
This book is available at VPL in regular type.
Happy reading!
