National Walk and Roll to School Day
National Walk and Roll to School Day is Wednesday, October 9, 2024. We encourage students, families, and staff to walk and/or bike to school to commemorate this very healthy and safe alternative to traveling to school.
Picture Day
Picture Day for Forest Knolls Elementary School is on Thursday, October 10, 2024. The order forms were sent home last week. Extra copies of the order form are available in the office. Classic Photography can be reached at (800)869-9515 x112.
Fall Survey for Forest Knolls Parents/Caregivers
The deadline for responding to the Fall Survey for Forest Knolls Parents/Caregivers has been extended. If you did not have an opportunity to respond in September, please add your feedback by October 11, 2024.
Celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month
The Forest Knolls PTA Equity Committee is organizing our school-based celebration of Hispanic Heritage on October 10, 2024 6:30-8:00 PM.
Math in the Neighborhood
Our team has exciting math games for our families. We will bring these games to you at the North Four Corners Park and the McDonald Knolls Early Childhood Center. Here’s how it works: We teach the students how to play engaging math games and give them the supplies to take home. The students can teach the parents, caregivers, siblings, and other family members. This year we will have a math game for younger siblings, too. We hope you can join us!
Rainbow Club
"Hello from your Rainbow Club Sponsors! Rainbow Club has started for the year! This club is a place of inclusion where we can learn about others and ourselves. To join, please use the remind code on our flyer and message us your student's name to receive a permission slip. We must have a permission slip returned before students can attend. Upcoming topics include friendship, advocacy, and affirmations. It's never too late to sign up!
- Teacher McKenzie, Ms. Pino, Ms. Stouffer"
Emergency Preparedness
Every school is required to complete a number of safety drills each year. Currently, we have completed a fire drill, and our lockdown/shelter drill. Our teachers have reviewed and discussed a variety of drills with our students and showed them the School Safety and Security Video (K-5). The website for the Department of Systemwide Safety and Security provides multiple resources on emergency preparedness and safety for families, students, and staff. Please feel free to review the videos and resources again with your child(ren) to avoid any undue anxiety.
Families can authorize other people to pick up their child(ren) by emailing their requests to Yaya Cinada and Amanda Hurtado, the attendance registrar. At the beginning of each school year, the system enables families to update their Emergency Contact information in their ParentVUE account.
On Friday, October 11th we will conduct our Parent Child Reunification Drill. PCR drills are planned exercises designed to prepare schools, students, and caregivers for the purpose of reuniting students with their families following an emergency or crisis situation. We are looking for families that are interested in participating in the drill by picking up their child(ren) between 2:00 to 3:00 on October 11th. If you are interested in participating in the PCR drill please come to the school on the 11th, and please note the following:
Our goal is to safely return every child to either his/her/their caregiver or someone who was listed on the emergency forms by the parent as approved.
All adults MUST HAVE A PHOTO ID (ie. state ID). We will only release children to adults that are authorized and are cleared once photo identification (driver's license or passport) is presented.
Cars MUST be parked in the neighborhood. The parking lots will not be available as the lot areas will need to be cleared for any emergency vehicles needed.
The main entrance will not be utilized.
The reunification process will begin at the entrance to the cafeteria and the line will wrap around the building towards the sliding glass doors. Please note only 15 adults will be allowed to enter the cafeteria at a time.
When adults are cleared to enter the cafeteria, they will be directed to a table line (ie. table 1, table 2, table 3) Adults may request their own child(ren) and anyone else they are assigned to pick up (adults MUST be pre-approved and on that child’s emergency sheet).
Adults will receive an index card showing who they are authorized to pick up.
Adults will take their index card and transition to the gym to meet their child(ren).
Once the unification is complete with adult and child(ren), they will exit the building from the gym. No one will not be permitted to return to the building upon exiting.
Converting from AC to Heat
Air conditioning will be turned off and heat will be made available at our school between October 15 and November 4, 2024, depending on weather conditions. It will take approximately three weeks to convert all MCPS facilities.
MCPS Calendar Survey
MCPS is seeking input about the 2025–2026 school year calendar! Please take a moment to complete the MCPS School Calendar Feedback Survey. Your input will be used to select the first and last day of school, as well as other important dates for the coming school year.
Holiday Giving Project
Holiday Giving Project forms were sent home last week. Extra copies are in the office. The Holiday Giving Project is where local non-profit agencies, faith-based organizations, service organizations and government agencies come together each year to offer food and other items around the holidays. Donations of food, gift cards, and toys come from private and public donations. The Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) hosts the referral database, facilitates the work of the Coalition, monitors outcomes, and provides overall Project coordination.
This project is aimed at our families who are the most in need and is an opportunity to support families over the holiday season. Families have the opportunity to sign up to receive gift cards, food, toys and other items during the holidays. Families can sign up for support during Thanksgiving, the December holidays, or both. One form should be filled out per family and returned to school (to the teacher or Ms. Schechter). The last day to submit the form back to me to receive Holiday Giving help is October 16th!
