Principal's Pen
Hello MES Families,
I hope those of you who live near the Mountain Fire were not badly impacted. My heart goes out to the hundreds of families who lost their homes and for the fire crews still battling the blazes. I know that this is the same week six years ago that the Woolsey Fire erupted and severely impacted so many of you. I hope you are doing ok. Reflecting on safety protocols, it’s essential that all families update their emergency contact information in AERIES to ensure your children can be safely released to a trusted adult during emergencies. Details on how to do this are provided below in the AERIES section at the bottom of this newsletter.
At MES our teachers are and will be rescheduling parent-teacher conferences that were interrupted. Thank you for your understanding and patience.
Our campus is being cleaned and serviced as the wind brought so much dust and debris into our buildings. The HVAC systems are also being serviced. Cafeteria food and beverages for the students have been ordered and will be here before Tuesday morning.
Thank you once more for generous support of the PTA Giving Drive. As published last week, the Drive brought in over $330,000 in donations and pledges. Our top participating classroom (Mrs. Tate) was awarded the honor of shooting Silly String all over me. Below are some photos. What fun that was for all the children.
I hope your child is enjoying school and is acquiring new academic skills rapidly. I am writing to remind you of several ways to help your child get the most out of their opportunities at MES.
Firstmost, stay in close contact with your child’s teachers. The teachers know your child’s independent reading level, how well your child is using Lexia and DreamBox on Clever, and so much more. If your child is in grade 2 through 5, please set up your HomeConnect account to witness your child’s reading progress with Accelerated Reader. HomeConnect can be accessed by you and your child outside of school from any computer with an Internet Connection. HomeConnect allows you to view information about your child's reading progress. It also allows you to sign up to receive email notifications after your child completes an activity or assessment at school. It's exciting for children when they get home and you already know how they performed in the last book. You can log in to Home Connect from any computer with an Internet Connection and compatible browser. Again, the teacher has your personal link to HomeConnect. This is just one more tool to help motivate your child.
Additionally, you can also review your child’s Star Reading (and Math for grades 2 through 5) Diagnostic scores in your Aeries Parent Portal.
Thank you for your partnership,
Proud Principal Chris Hertz
