Principal’s Message
Dear Cavett Families,
Happy New Year! It’s hard to believe we’re already in 2025! I hope everyone had a restful and enjoyable holiday spent with family and friends. For me, it was a time for relaxation with my family and binge-watching movies—it was fantastic!
As we continue through cold and flu season, please remember to keep your children home if they are feeling unwell. If they have a fever, they must be fever-free for 24 hours without medication before returning to school. Don’t forget to call in their absences.
We have a lot to look forward to as we enter our third quarter, including field trips, class pictures, and parent-teacher conferences. Be sure to read the newsletter that comes home from your child’s teachers for more details.
Additionally, we are bringing in a new teacher to support the large first-grade classroom. Ms. Pramanik will be working alongside Dr. Serrano during the first week back, and you will receive information on how we will share students between classrooms to lower the student-to-teacher ratio.
Best wishes for a wonderful start to the new year!
Carol Leeson, M. Ed. Principal

Tax Credit
You can help our students get the most out of school years by making contributions through Arizona's tax-credit programs.
Contributing is easy, and the impact is immense.
Arizona law ARS 43-1089.01 enables taxpayers a tax credit contribution of up to $400.00 per calendar year if filing status is Married, filing Joint Return; $200.00 per calendar year if filing status is Single or Head of Household; and, $200.00 per calendar year if filing status is Married filing separate return — for contributions that fund extracurricular activities in public schools. Contributions eligible for a tax credit are donated directly to school sites.
Ways to Donate
To make a tax credit contribution, please follow the link listed below to donate online to a school of your choice. You can also choose to make a cash/check contribution by clicking on the link to our TUSD School Tax Credit Form. Please print, complete, and submit your contribution in person at the school of your choice or by mail.
You may also like to support Educational Enrichment Foundation, a qualifying charitable organization, which provides resources to expand and enrich student learning in the Tucson Unified School District.
Toys
Toys from home
We want to make sure that we are paying attention in class and really enjoying our time with our amazing faculty and community. For that reason, we do not allow toys, Pokémon cards, stuffed animals, Legos, etc. to be brought from home and used on school grounds. These items can be a distraction in class and distract from our students’ learning. In addition, teachers may have specific reward days or a show-and-tell day where a child is allowed to bring something from home. During those special days, students should follow the teachers’ instructions and continue to leave the items in their backpacks until they have permission from the teacher to take them out. Cavett staff are not responsible for the loss of any items that are brought to school.

90% ATTENDANCE EACH MONTH!
Volunteers and Visitors
Volunteers and Vistors
We welcome your support! If you are interested in volunteering in your child's classroom or throughout our campus, please contact our office manager, Ms. Quintana, to learn how you can volunteer.
The safety of our Eagles and our Staff is our upmost concern, please sign-in at the front office anytime you are on campus.
Free Breakfast and Lunch
Breakfast and Lunch
School lunch and breakfast are now free to all students! We do ask that you still complete all forms necessary in synergy while registering your child, as your responses help us with our school funding. Please pay specific attention to the Title One and Free/ Reduced lunch forms while you complete your registration.
Healthy Snacks for School
Snacks
We will have a daily snack time to support our students' minds and bodies. Snacks can be brought from home; however, we are asking students bring only "healthy" snacks, and please not to share anything with others as a health precaution. Donations of snacks for the entire class at the beginning of each month are greatly appreciated. Please only bring individually packaged snacks.
Healthy snack suggestions include:
- Pretzels
- Cheese sticks
- Fruit snacks
- Popcorn
- Animal crackers
- Chocolate chip granola bar
- Goldfish
Please remember that gum and candy are never allowed at school or our afterschool program. Additionally, hot chips (Takis, Hot Cheetos, etc.) are proven to cause stomach issues. We would like to promote healthy snacks for our community. We also want to keep our campus looking clean and beautiful; gum can get caught on people’s shoes, furniture, and playground equipment. We want to avoid these sticky situations at Cavett.

Character Trait of the Month: Perseverance
Perseverance Overview
This month is all about Perseverance. One way to think about Perseverance is “pushing yourself through challenges and obstacles.” We all experience challenges in our lives. We all have moments when we feel like we can’t do it or that we want to give up on a big task. It is important to develop tools that help us work through those challenges in order to grow in those moments instead of giving up. How might you practice Perseverance as a family this month? Perseverance is 1 of 3 traits we will focus on throughout the year that helps students Be Strong. Across grade levels, students will be developing skills like focusing, organizing, and goal-setting.
PurposeFull Pursuits
Have some fun connecting as a family this month while practicing Perseverance. Here are 2 “PurposeFull Pursuits” you can complete together!
#1 Consistency is hard. Have each person in the family commit to 1 thing they will do each day this week. Maybe it is flossing, drinking a certain amount of water, getting to bed at a certain time, limiting screen time, or exercising. Create a place where each person can tally their progress and see who can keep their streak going the longest!
#2 Review Perseverance as a family! Remember that Perseverance is pushing yourself to work through challenges and obstacles. Here’s a fun challenge: Can you fit your whole body through an index card? While it sounds impossible, with the correct folding and cutting technique, you can make it happen! Give each family member a 4x6 index card and a pair of scissors. Ready for the answer? You can find the directions and solution online by searching: “Fit Your Body Through an Index Card.
Conversation Starters
- Can you share or show what it means to have Perseverance?
- When working towards goals, how does Perseverance help us to reach them?

Dress for Success
Dress for Success
Our Eagles are active throughout the day. It is important that they wear appropriate outdoor clothing and closed-toe shoes to fully participate in these activities.
Additionally, it may be beneficial to provide a change of clothes to keep in their cubby or backpack. This should include socks, underwear, a shirt, and pants appropriate for the current season, all labeled with your child’s name and placed in a Ziploc bag. If your child comes home with soiled clothes, kindly send a replacement set as soon as possible.
Cell Phones
Cell Phones
We have seen a lot of usage of cell phones and air pods during the school day. Please remind your student that if they bring their phone, air pods, smart watches etc. they need to keep it in their pocket or backpack, and we are not responsible for items lost or stolen. Students are not allowed to use electronics during class, passing period, etc. Students seen using electronics without permission will have items confiscated. You may view the TUSD Policy here.
