Project: Metaphor
Understanding the Directions
For this project, your goal is to write a paragraph that uses at least 3 metaphors.
What is a metaphor?
A metaphor is a phrase that compares two or more ideas by saying they are equal.
Example: Sarah is an icicle now that she played in the snow.
In the example above, we know that Sarah is not actually made of ice! Instead, this is a strong comparison (metaphor) that shows how cold Sarah is.
We use metaphors all the time without thinking about it! For example, have you every heard someone say, "Oh, you're such a baby."
We know that it doesn't mean the person being spoken to is less than 2 years old. Instead, it is a way of calling someone weak or cowardly.
How can I write a metaphor?
While there is not a set pattern for creating metaphors, it may help to think of a metaphor like a math equation.
We could think about the statement 2=2. Instead of twos, we can use the thing we want to describe and a comparison.
You (2) are (=) a tomato (2).
This could mean that someone looks very red or is even sunburned!
