APRIL NEWSLETTER
WEEK 13 MARCH 31 - APRIL 4
PRINCIPAL'S MESSAGE
Hello, DMHS Parents and Families,
I have a couple of announcements and updates for this upcoming week.
Summative English Language Proficiency Assessments for California (Summative ELPAC)
The ELPAC is the state’s assessment used to determine the ELP of students who have been determined to be eligible for EL services. The ELPAC is aligned to the state’s English language development standards. Progress toward ELP is determined based on the progress results of the students’ annual Summative ELPAC or Summative Alternate ELPAC.
The California Department of Education (CDE) has established to annually assess each enrolled English Learner(EL) student for English language proficiency (ELP) using the state’s test until they exit from EL services, which occurs at reclassification. Students are tested in listening, speaking, reading and writing in order to determine if a student can reclassify.
Ms. Martinez-Gertner, our EL Designee has begun administering the English Learner the Summative English Language Proficiency Assessments for California (ELPAC) to our English Learner students. She will be testing them from 03/24/25 - 04/04/25
SBAC Assembly (Smarter Balanced Assessment Consortium)
All of our 11th graders will have an Assembly on Thursday, April 3rd about the SBAC. In this assembly we will let our students know the criteria that will be used for these assessments.
School Experience Survey for Families
Please don’t forget to take the School Experience Survey. Last year our response from families was 34%. We need to push that percentage up and we are aiming for 50%! The survey window closes on April 11, 2025.
Three-Day Weekend
Monday March 31 there will be no class in Observance of Cesar Chavez Birthday. We will resume classes on Tuesday, April 1. Enjoy your three day weekend.
Open House
On Thursday, April 10th we will be hosting OPEN HOUSE from 5:00 to 7:00 PM. Parking will be available starting at 4:30pm in the faculty parking structure. The entrance to the garage is on 1st street. Parking entrance can be found at: 1151 W 1st St, Los Angeles, CA 90012 . Open House is a perfect opportunity to come see projects or in class work your student has done during this semester.
Stay safe, and see you all soon.

Tips to help your child
1. CAASPP is digital. Help to make sure your child’s Chromebook is charged and packed in their backpack before leaving for school.
2. For maximum performance on testing day, be sure that your child gets a good night's sleep and eats a nourishing breakfast.
3.CAASPP will start promptly at 8:30am. Make sure your child arrives to school 15 minutes earlier.
Do your best Juniors!
3/26 After the parent workshop our fabulous parents wished good luck and reminded our Juniors that SBAC is 13 days away.
SBAC Student Testing Strategies
ENSURE OPTIMUM PERFORMANCE USING THESE STUDENT TEST-TAKING TIPS
- Get lots of sleep the night before the test. Tests are easier when you are mentally sharp.
- Read each question before you look at the answers. Come up with the answer in your head first.
- Eliminate answers you know are incorrect. Read all your choices before making a decision.
- Go back to difficult questions. While looking over the rest of the test and doing easy questions, your mind will have been thinking on the answers for the difficult questions.
- If you have time at the end of the test, check your answers. Did you answer each one completely?
- Proofread your answers for mistakes.
- Express difficult questions in your own words. Rephrasing can make it clear to you but be sure you don’t change the meaning of the question.
- Use all of the time allotted for the test. If you have extra time, cover up your answers and rework problems.
- Eliminate any answers you know to be wrong, are likely to be wrong, don’t seem to fit, or where two options are so similar as to be both incorrect.
- If you find yourself getting anxious or overwhelmed, take a few deep breaths to relax.

As we wait for those last college acceptances to come in (the very last is Stanford on April Fools Day), I want to remind the seniors that being denied admission to a school that denies over 80% of their applicants is not a fail! There are so many people who did not attend a top ranked school and had highly successful lives. GO WHERE YOU GET IN!! You may find that this really was the perfect environment for you, but you didn’t know it yet. Still, how do we deal with those rejections? Why do we throw a party, of course!!! The DMHS Famous Rejection Party will be held on Thursday, April 10 at 3:45 pm. As usual, your ticket in is a printed out rejection letter, and we will be shredding these letters as well as eating ice cream sundaes! For the person with the most rejections, you will be crowned “the King (or Queen) of Rejection, and besides your crown, you will receive a $50 gift certificate to Barnes and Noble, who run just about every bookstore on college campuses today. No rejections? Stay out! This is for those of us who need to release the pain. See you on April 10!
