Each week we will showcase a librarian from our region.
Who: Kate Banks
What: Secondary School Librarian
Where: Columbia High School (East Greenbush CSD)
A favorite hobby: My favorite hobby is going for hikes with my husband Greg. Being in nature and taking photos is one of our favorite things to do together. He has been a wonderful quarantine partner! Reading is a very close second ; )
What book would you recommend: This is always the toughest question! The book that I have most recently read that is staying with me is We Were Liars by E. Lockhart. I had been told by many friends how incredible it was and I absolutely agree! The book I just started is All the Bright Places by Jennifer Niven and it has absolutely drawn me in! Reading has been a great way to escape all of this stress!
Share something that you are proud of that has recently happened in your library/school: Over the last two years, my colleagues and I have been working tirelessly to genrefy the fiction section of the library. I was completely resistant to the trend at first, but I will do ANYTHING to get my kiddos interested in reading. So I caved and decided to jump on the genrefying bandwagon and it has been fantastic! Going through each title and categorizing them into the nine genres was a tremendously arduous experience, but it allowed us as librarians to delve into collection development in a way that we had not been able to in years (maybe ever)! I used Jennifer LaGarde's model and would be happy to talk about our process with anyone interested.
What drew you to a career in school librarianship: My very first official job was working as a Page in the children's department of my local library. I fell in love with every aspect of being a librarian. I did have a fabulous school librarian and that helped, but it was really seeing what it meant to be a part of a library community. I have always enjoyed spending time in libraries, but until I worked in one I wasn't able to see the daily impact that library services have on a community! Working toward and attaining my teaching and library certifications has been the biggest accomplishment of my life. Being a school librarian is the best job in the world!
