Unexpected Gifts, Unforgettable Journeys: Honoring Our MoCI and MiCI Graduates
We celebrated 4 graduates from our MoCI and MiCI Special Education programs from the Class of 2025 at Lake Shore High School.
Teachers Mr. Carney and Mrs. Fain shared heartfelt congratulations as each graduate was honored for their achievements. The ceremony featured the classic Pomp and Circumstance processional, moving performances by the Women’s Chamber Choir, and memorable speeches from staff and students. A special slideshow by Carsyn Allen captured the highlights and favorite memories of the year.
Superintendent Dr. DiPonio shared, "I am inspired by everything that you do. You are everything that is good about public education." He went on to list several P2 character strengths and explained that these students, both graduates and Senior leaders, are everything we need in the world. "Sometimes the most incredible gifts come in the most surprising forms — you are that gift to Lake Shore."
Principal Dr. Bross officially performed the tassel ceremony, declaring these students are graduates of Lake Shore High School, symbolized by the moving of the tassel from right to left.
Our students looked stunning in their graduation regalia as they celebrated this unforgettable day with staff, friends, and family in the Lake Shore High School auditorium. This ceremony is a powerful reminder of the strength and potential within every student.

Featured Story: Childhood First, Screens Later
Part of a National Shift, Lake Shore High Pilots Cell Phone-Free Learning
Recent legislation in a number of states, including Michigan, have initiated the first steps towards removing cell phones from schools and the immensely negative impact they are having on our kids and schools. Over the past year, District officials have spent considerable time and study exploring this issue. The evidence is clear and undisputable. At best, cell phones in schools are an immense distraction from learning. More commonly, they are a conduit for serious and concerning mental health issues and bullying. They rob kids of human interaction and create an addiction-type stimulus that has altered childhood. A phone-based childhood has replaced a play-based childhood. The consequences are obvious.
Mrs. Stuckey's AP Language and Composition and Honors Literature and Rhetoric classes at Lake Shore High School made a bold move this month: they locked up their phones in Yondr pouches at the start of the hour. No buzzing, no TikToks, no distractions—just eye contact, conversation, and real human connection.
A Yondr pouch is a special lockable pouch used to create phone-free spaces. Here’s how it works:
- Students place their phones inside the pouch when they enter school.
- The pouch locks shut using a magnetic mechanism—similar to how clothing tags are locked in stores.
- Students keep their phones with them, but they can’t access them until they leave school and unlock the pouch at a designated station.
Inspired by the insights from Jonathan Haidt’s The Anxious Generation, which highlights the impact of constant digital exposure on youth anxiety, the initiative aims to foster genuine connections and reduce distractions. The mantra is clear: childhood first, screens later.
English teacher Mrs. Stuckey emphasized the importance of implementing a system to help students better manage their use of technology. She stated, “Students are struggling with self-regulation. There’s a mental health crisis, and they need time away from screens to reconnect with one another.”
Most Juniors and Freshmen shared the same sentiments: They dislike the idea.
They acknowledged that they enjoy receiving sports updates and notifications from friends throughout the day and have become accustomed to having that constant access.
Principal Dr. Bross responded, “We’re not against phones — we’re pro-students. We’ll pursue any steps that help improve our school and create a better learning environment.”
"This really isn't a big deal for me," said Junior Teagan Klott. "I don’t use my phone that much—my daily screen time is only about 50 minutes, which I know isn’t typical for most people. Honestly, I think a change like this is necessary in today’s world. So many people are constantly glued to their phones, and it’s affecting their well-being. I feel like my mental health is in a good place, and I believe that’s partly because I’m not constantly stuck on my phone. Taking a break from screens can really make a difference.”
Despite reservations from some students, early observations are promising:
- Enhanced focus during lessons
- Increased face-to-face interactions among students
- Reduced anxiety linked to social media pressures
Lake Shore Public Schools will continue to evaluate the implementation of cell phone-free schools, to assess its potential and determine future steps. It's a move that echoes a growing trend in schools nationwide, seeking to reclaim schools as a space for learning and personal growth.

LSHS's Class of 2025 102nd Commencement Ceremony
With a weather prediction of 77 degrees and partly cloudy on Saturday, May 31st, Lake Shore High School’s Class of 2025 102nd Commencement Ceremony will be held outdoors on our athletic field at 10am.
Here are a few things to keep in mind:
- Press Release: https://www.lakeshoreschools.org/.../pages/GetFile.ashx...
- Tickets: Because there is ample seating in our stadium, no tickets will be necessary to enter. All are welcome. If we have to move indoors, we will provide students with at least 5 tickets per graduate, potentially more depending on how many additional seats we can fit into the performance gym. The number of tickets would be publicized on the day the weather decision is made and tickets would be given out to Seniors on Honors Night in their envelopes.
- Student Report Time: Students must report by 9:15am to the Crellin gym in order to get their announcement cards, get their pronunciation correct for the counselors, and get lined up. Do not be late or you will be left behind.
- Announcement Order: Students will not be seated in alphabetical order. The past few years, we allowed students to select where they sit so they can be near friends and those they are comfortable with. The Class of 2025 has opted to keep that new tradition going.
- Doors Open: Doors to the stadium will be open to the public at 8am. Ceremony begins promptly at 10am.
- Reserving Seats: Once doors are open, all seating is first come, first serve. However, we ask that you refrain from saving seats. In order to maximize the number of guests able to sit and enjoy the ceremony, we ask that our guests please be mindful of where they are placing their feet, purses, and other belongings.
- Additional Seating On Track: There are a few areas in the bleachers that are wheelchair accessible. However, to better serve our guests with wheelchairs, walkers, other medical devices, or medical conditions that prevent them from getting into the stands, we will have seating available for them and the family they are with to sit on track level. Please know that this seating is limited and will prioritized for those with wheelchairs, walkers, or a medical issue that prevents them from entering the bleachers will be allowed access. However, once the bleachers are filled, these seats will be open to all guests.
- Parking: The staff lot on the west end of the building, closest to the stadium, will be completely reserved for those who have valid handicap parking tags. All other guests are asked to park in our student lot on the east end of the building or at Kennedy Middle School for the shuttle service. Assuming the weather prior to graduation day cooperates, we will have some grass parking available behind the school which can be accessed from the student parking lot.
- Shuttle Service: Beginning at 8:30am, we will have shuttles available running between the student lot and the stadium for guests that do not have handicap parking but may still need some assistance traveling that distance. Just wave down the friendly golf cart driver for a lift! Shuttle service is also available from KMS to the stadium and return shuttle after the ceremony!
- Graduation DVD Purchase: https://www.lakeshoreschools.org/common/pages/GetFile.ashx?key=l11%2bARaj
- Photos: Professional photos from Stewart Fine Portraits will be released after special events and available for free download. Visit https://www.stewartfineportraits.com to access all special event photography.

Summer Reading at St. Clair Shores Public Library
As we prepare for the end of the school year, the St. Clair Shores Public Library is busy planning another summer of programs and activities for the annual Summer Reading Program. This year’s theme, Color Our World, will encourage students to become active readers and highlight the important role of libraries in the community.
Summer Reading is a statewide program that encourages children to read throughout the summer at no cost to their families. It reinforces to parents the importance of maintaining reading habits that were developed during the school year. As you know, children who read during summer are better prepared to begin school in September. We respectfully request your assistance in promoting this worthwhile program to students.
The library provides programming for children, from birth to age eighteen, during the summer generously sponsored by the Friends of the St. Clair Shores Public Library and Shorewood Kiwanis. This summer programming will take place in-person at the library. The Book Camp programs are for all ages, but are geared towards children two to eight years of age. The Maker Thursday programs are for children entering grades third through sixth only, and give those children their own time and space to explore with hands-on activities. Teens have their own fun-filled programs. For more specific information on any of the programs offered, please use this link to see the schedule of events flyer.

Books are uniquely portable magic; We would love to see our Shorian Nation participate in this Summer Reading Program.

I am so beyond grateful to have grown up with her in my life and to see her growth as not only a person but as a athlete and actor, I can’t wait to see what the future holds for her."
Lauren's woven into the fabric of the school, always giving, always leading, always there. As a senior, her leadership has left a lasting mark—and it will undoubtedly be missed.

KMS Tour Day
Transitioning from Masonic Heights, Rodgers, or Violet Elementary to Kennedy Middle School can feel like a big leap—new building, new faces, new routines. To help ease those nerves, we hosted Tour Day at KMS just for our incoming 6th graders!
Led by awesome 8th graders and National Junior Honor Society members—Brooklyn Berry, Dominick Graziano, William Hemmert, Mason Merten, Brooklynn Tyll, and Madisen Yoblonski—students got a personalized tour of their future school. From the 6th-grade wing to the media center, lunchroom, and exploratory classes, our guides covered the 15 most important things to know about middle school life.
Some groups were full of questions, others quietly took it all in—but all left with a better idea of what’s ahead.
Our tour guides shared what they love most about KMS—from science projects like dissecting pig hearts, to amazing staff like Mrs. Adamkiewicz , to sports, field trips, and friendships that make these years unforgettable.
Middle school may start with uncertainty, but it quickly becomes a place of growth, independence, and new adventures.
A huge thank you to Principal Dr. Johnson, Assistant Principal Mr. Gaffigan, Dean of Students Ms. Kubiak, and all of our incredible KMS staff for your leadership and heart.
The Clipper journey starts here—and the future looks bright!
From Classrooms to Carriages: 4th Graders Explore the Wonders of Mackinac Island
Our 4th graders from Masonic Heights Elementary, Rodgers Elementary, and Violet Elementary had an unforgettable adventure on their field trip to Mackinac!
The 63 students explored Fort Michilimackinac, toured Historic Mill Creek, rode Shepler’s Ferry, dined at Mission Point, and took in the sights with a downtown scavenger hunt, visits to the Mackinac Art Museum and Marquette Park, and even a carriage ride!
Mackinac’s rich history, stunning natural beauty, and unique car-free environment provided students with an unforgettable and immersive learning experience. As Michael shared, “I enjoyed listening to the stories, myths, and history about the island during the carriage ride.” Henry found the visit to Fort Michilimackinac especially fascinating, enjoying the chance to learn more about the war and how soldiers lived. Gavin loved exploring the beach, discovering unique rocks and crab claws, and was especially excited to see the iconic bridge in person. Sofia appreciated the hike up to Fort Mackinac, while Macy and Bentley enjoyed the carriage tour and had fun browsing through all the local shops.
Our teacher chaperones also enjoyed the trip. Mrs. Rhadigan reflected, "As the district elementary art teacher, one of my favorite parts of our trip to Mackinac Island was simply taking in the breathtaking scenery. From the dramatic view at Arch Rock to the peaceful shoreline, the entire island felt like a living canvas. I was especially captivated by the blooming tulips, the strong but graceful horses, and the way nature and history intertwine all around the island. As someone who teaches students to observe the world through an artistic lens, I also loved seeing the DIA artworks thoughtfully placed throughout the island—they added another layer of inspiration. It was a truly rich experience, full of color, texture, and beauty. I came back with my camera full and my creativity recharged."
We’re so proud to give our students these hands-on opportunities that bring classroom lessons to life. We overheard a parent say, 'My daughter made some great new friends — and grew even closer to her old ones!'
From Principal to Performer
Move over, Broadway... Dr. Bross has entered the stage!
Lake Shore High School is beyond lucky to have a leader like Principal Dr. Bross at the helm. Her dedication, compassion, and fierce commitment to student success is unmatched. Whether she's cheering on our athletes, supporting teachers, or going above and beyond to create a positive school culture, Dr. Bross leads with heart and purpose every single day.
Dr. Bross stole the show as Chef Louis, the over-the-top (and slightly unhinged) chef in the matinee performance of The Little Mermaid! Known for his relentless — yet hilariously unsuccessful — attempts to cook Sebastian, Chef Louis is a minor antagonist with a major flair for the dramatic. Dr. Bross brought him to life with an exquisitely exaggerated French accent and delivered a show-stopping rendition of "Les Poissons" that had the whole audience in stitches. It’s safe to say: she might love the role almost as much as Chef Louis loves his job.
LSHS Math teacher Mrs. Taormina complimented, "Dr. Bross makes it look easy to perform, but I know she took great care in preparing to shine on stage. She exemplifies that great leaders don't just stand behind their students—they stand beside them, and in this case, sing and dance with them too!"
Bross wrote, "A huge thank you to the amazing director and the incredibly talented students who welcomed me backstage and made me feel like part of the cast. And to the family, friends, and colleagues who showed up to cheer me on from the audience — your support means the world."
Thank you, Dr. Bross, for making Lake Shore a place where everyone feels seen, supported, and inspired to shine. You truly are the heart of our school!
Innovation
Senior Adulting Day & MoCI Swim Sessions Make a Splash
It's Senior Adulting Day!
We've planned a series of hands-on sessions to help Seniors build real-world skills—think basic cookie decorating and sewing . Thank you retired teachers Pat O'Connor and Kathy Cilluffo for facilitating these activities.
Lilly Benson said, "I love this! I have decorated cookies forever with my mom and grandma. This was a great way to start my day!"
As seniors enjoy their morning, MoCI students from across the district are also gaining valuable experience by learning and practicing an essential life skill: swimming.
MoCI students from Lake Shore High School, Kennedy Middle School, and Rodgers Elementary recently had the opportunity to swim alongside their Senior Leadership peers in the pool at Lake Shore High School. This special activity allows students from various Lake Shore schools to connect and spend time with MoCI friends from different buildings.
Mrs. Belanger, the Adapted Physical Education Teacher, highlighted the significance of this experience:
"I am certified in Lifeguarding and as a Water Safety Instructor. My mission is to teach students how to stay safe in and around water while helping them develop essential swimming skills. We also focus on life skills, such as independently changing into and out of swimwear, personal hygiene, and smoothly transitioning back into regular clothing. These experiences prepare students to confidently participate in community outings."
Swimming offers numerous benefits for children, including improved social skills, increased self-esteem, and enhanced cognitive development. "I believe every child deserves the chance to learn the fundamentals of swimming and to enjoy the water in a safe, supportive environment. That’s why integrating swimming into my curriculum has been a personal goal of mine."
Got an idea for a useful life skill we should cover next year? We want to hear it!
National Speech-Language-Hearing Month
Each May, National Speech-Language-Hearing Month provides an opportunity to raise awareness about communication disorders and the role of ASHA members in providing life-altering treatment. This year’s observance is particularly special as 2025 marks ASHA’s Centennial.

They provide therapy and support to students ranging in age from 3 through 12th grade. These professionals assist students in a variety of areas, including articulation, social language, expressive and receptive language, augmentative and alternative communication (AAC), fluency, and hearing.
One area we've previously highlighted but have now greatly expanded is the use of AAC (Augmentative and Alternative Communication) devices. A large number of our students have been introduced to these tools, starting as early as our Pre-K Special Education classrooms and continuing through high school. Many of these students experience significant apraxia or other disabilities that make verbal speech challenging for functional communication.
Mrs. Atkins explained, "With the collaboration of SLPs and classroom teachers, these students are now able to communicate in ways that were not previously possible. This progress has fostered greater independence, enhanced learning, and boosted self-esteem."
She continued, "We have received grants from both the Lake Shore Foundation and Michigan Schools and Government that have helped us fund purchasing both ipads and AAC apps for students. We use them throughout the students' day during routine class activities, lunch, play time so that they can indicate choices, make requests, answer class questions, indicate their feelings. I work together with Rebecca Asni in small groups. We have worked on engagement, calming techniques, turn taking, expressing feelings, indicating when they don't feel well, play skills, among other things all while modeling use of the devices."
Celebration
2025 Prom
School dances are an opportunity for students to socialize with friends, cultivate positive emotions, and create memories that will last for a lifetime.
Lake Shore High School's Prom was held at the San Marino Club, a grand experience decorated in The Great Gatsby theme! Designed with inspiration drawn from the majestic mountain retreats of Mont Titans, The San Marino Club in Troy stands as a symbol of enduring romance.
Congratulations to Prom King and Queen 2025, Jordan Coleman and Bridgette Wilson representing North Lake High School in April and Jimmy Sheen and Teressa Leahy were announced as Lake Shore High School's King and Queen royalty!
Senior Jimmy explained, “High School would not be what it was without my amazing friends and it’s such an honor that they chose me to represent them! It truly made my night!”
Thank you to the staff, PTOs, and student leaders for creating events that made our students feel special. The preparation and planning beforehand, the execution during, and the cleanup after is no small task. A greater sense of community resulted from your efforts and we cannot be more grateful for your thoughtfulness.

May is designated as Military Appreciation Month, making it the perfect time to honor and celebrate. We would like to recognize the following Class of 2025 Seniors for the bravery it takes to say, “I will serve.”

- Kayla Patterson - Marine Corps
- Joshua Post - Air Force
- Haven Roberts - Army
- Julian Smith - Coast Guard
- Carter Warunkiewicz - Air Force
Thank you for your dedication to protecting and serving our nation. We are grateful for the Lake Shore students who choose to enlist in the armed services, understanding that it means time away from loved ones, sacrifices, and facing countless challenges.
Whether you’re in uniform or not, whether you’re serving across the globe or just down the street, you will always be a Shorian in our eyes. We will never forget your service.
We'd also like to recognize LSHS Class of 2005 alumnus Mike Morrow. He's served in the Navy as an enlisted Sailor and now a commissioned officer for nearly 16 years, currently holding the rank of Lieutenant Commander. Over his career, he's been stationed in Hawaii, Virginia Beach, Jacksonville (FL), and he's currently on his third tour in the Pentagon in Washington D.C. His deployments include an aircraft carrier out of Yokosuka, Japan; one year in Kabul, Afghanistan; squadron deployments to Misawa, Japan; Bahrain, Sicily, and Scotland. The first half of his career was spent as an enlisted intelligence specialist with the second half as an intelligence officer.
If you are a Lake Shore alumnus who has served or is currently serving in the military, we would like to recognize you. Please reach out to us via email at social@lsps.org.

Flying High: KMS Drone Team Takes Off at SquareOne Competition
Kennedy Middle School 8th graders Isaac Castle and Kalix Loumanis represented their school at the SquareOne Educational Network's Middle School Level IVD Drone Competition, held at the Romulus Athletic Center.
This marks the inaugural year of the SquareOne drone program at KMS, and Isaac and Kalix were the only participants from Macomb County at the event. The competition challenged students with a series of obstacle courses and problem-solving tasks designed to test their drone piloting skills.
The program's launch at KMS has been a great success, and opportunities for LSPS students to engage with SquareOne events will expand in the 2025–26 school year and beyond.
Lake Shore and American House: A Year of Intergenerational Friendship
This school year, Lake Shore Public Schools proudly partnered with American House Lakeshore for a series of heartwarming intergenerational activities that brought students and senior residents together through music, storytelling, games, and creativity.
This year's activities featured interviews about adolescent years and life advice, reading and crafting sessions during March is Reading Month, a 100th Day of School celebration with BINGO, trick-or-treating, musical performances from all grade levels, and special invitations for residents to attend live productions of Little Shop of Horrors and The Little Mermaid at LSHS, as well as The Lion King from Rodgers Elementary's Drama Club.
We’re feeling bittersweet as we made our final stop of the 2024–25 school year, featuring performances from our talented Music Department at Masonic Heights Elementary and Violet Elementary.

Thank you for helping break down stereotypes and misconceptions by allowing young Shorian students and older American House adults learn from one another’s perspectives and life experiences, providing companionship and patience, and building moments of connection.
This was made possible thanks to Rachel Smith of American House for her compassionate care for the residents, along with the invaluable support of Lake Shore programming from Mrs. Elkins, Mrs. Rueger-West, Mrs. Wischmeyer, Mrs. Biondo, Mrs. Snarski, Mrs. Kiefer, Mr. Filipek, Mrs. Welsh, Mrs. Peacock, Mrs. Spriet, and Mrs. Amateis. We also appreciate the support from Rachel Nagorsen, Community Relations Director, for snacks to fuel student visitors, donuts for Bring Your Child to Work Day, and lunches for Teacher Appreciation Day!
These connections prove that age is just a number when hearts come together.
Bonus: On June 20th, 2025, American House Lakeshore will have a day full of fundraising opportunities to raise a collection for The Longest Day. What is The Longest Day? It is recognition of the day with the most light—The Summer Solstice—where the Alzheimer’s Association raises funds and awareness for the care, support, and research of Alzheimer's Disease. Our community goal is to collect $4,000 to donate to the Alzheimer’s Association.

Athletics
Athletics Website
We have built an online home for our athletic department. Our goal is to bring our athletic programs to life by sharing schedules, scores, and social media while ensuring our athletes get the promotion they deserve. Visit the Shorian Sports website for 24/7/365 access to the information you have always wanted and follow along with our sports action.
We have partnered with Kroger to help fund our athletics. Please read this letter from our Athletic Coordinator Rich Bowers.
We believe a balance of academics and athletics creates a well-rounded student. Students who participate in sports not only gain the benefits of living a healthy lifestyle, they also learn lessons about sportsmanship, leadership, teamwork, cooperation, respect, and knowing how to win and lose.
