Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test
The Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test is a standardized test administered by the College Board during October that closely mirrors the SAT. College-bound 11th graders are encouraged to take the test. The PSAT/NMSQT can qualify students for the National Merit Scholarship Program and other scholarships. Please see the Parents Guide to PSAT/NMSQT for more information and to see if your student would benefit from taking the test.
Central Valley Charter Schools do not provide a testing site, however, some local private and public schools have allowed our students to test with them in the past. You can search and find a school here. Email your interest to the school along with the student's first and last name, and grade level as soon as possible. The test fee is $18. It is required that the students have a student ID to identify them on the test day.

National Honors Society and National Junior Honors Society News - Apply for Membership
Now that we are back to school, that means that NJHS and NHS will soon be back in session as well.
Membership in the National Honor Society (NHS) and National Junior Honor Society (NJHS) is one of the highest honors that can be awarded to our excelling students. The Central Valley NHS and NJHS chapters strive to give practical meaning to the Society’s standards of scholarship, service, leadership, and character. These ideals are considered the basis for selection. Membership, however, is more than an honor. It is an ongoing responsibility and an obligation to continue to demonstrate those outstanding qualities that result in a student’s selection.
Students will participate in group service projects, attend monthly meetings, and continue individual community service projects. NHS and NJHS are eager to accept New Member Applications! Eligible students in grades 10-12 with a cumulative GPA of 3.5 and above for NHS or grades 7-9 and a GPA of 3.0 and above for NJHS can apply.
Our faculty council will be evaluating applications in October. The deadline for applications is October 4th. If your student is eligible and would like to apply, please reach out to Michele Crews at michele.crews@yosemitevalleycharter.org, representing both Central schools. She is eager to send you the new membership application and tell you more about this wonderful leadership opportunity for your students.

Academic Challenges for Primary Students
Dive deeper into learning with our Academic Challenges! Central Valley Charter Schools want to encourage our students to take pride and ownership in their educational journey. We are offering opportunities and incentives for our students as they work towards mastery of essential skills, such as Sight Words, Math Facts, Writing, and Reading. Please refer to our newsletter for more information and participation details. If you have any questions please email our Curriculum and Instruction team at curriculum@centralvcs.org.
"Sweet" Incentive - Nothing Bundt Cakes is inviting our students to join their "Books & Bundts" youth reading program. This is a great opportunity for our students to receive double the reward for reading. Please refer to our Academic Challenges newsletter for the delicious details.
ID Cards for Primary Students
Last year the school sent a physical ID card to all elementary students that did not include a date so we could use them again. This school year all newly enrolled students will have one made and sent to them to use for event check in and whatever else they may need them for. The elementary IDs do not include a photo, just their name, student ID number and school name.
An alternaitve to the phyiscal card is just using the digital ID card the school sent out with the QR code. You can screenshot and save it for easy check-in at events. For September you will likely not receive ID cards for new students, so plan to use the digital one for events. It is also not necessary to use one at all. We can check enrolled students in without it, just a stitch slower.

The BIG List of Academic Adventure Ideas
The schools are enhancing their academic trips this year to make them more enriching and engaging! With a focus on quality over quantity, there will be fewer school-sponsored trips, but parents can still take advantage of OS funds to explore educational destinations with their students. And with a Big List of ideas available, there are plenty of opportunities for learning and making new friends. Sounds like a fantastic way to make the most of the school year!
Academic Integrity
Our school urges students to conduct themselves ethically and honorably. It is expected that the grade a student earns is based on work the student has completed. Teachers can use Grammarly or other plagiarism checker websites. Please review the definition of plagiarism as outlined in the 24-25 School Handbook located on our website under Resources.
