Message from the Principals
Happy New Year, South Families!
As we start the second half of the school year, we're excited about the progress our students have made since the end of August and the opportunities that lie ahead. We had many opportunities to celebrate with each other in December during Cricket Convention and other events. In keeping with this topic, we would like to acknowledge and thank our PTO for all of the fun holiday activities they provided in December, from staff breakfasts, to gingerbread house nights, to donut day, and holiday spirit week! South Elementary PTO has a generous and dedicated PTO and we are grateful for their support and fun!
In the coming months, our students will continue to learn new things and develop important skills. Our teachers are committed to helping each student reach their full potential. Along with academics, we're also focused on social-emotional learning. This helps our students manage their feelings, build strong relationships, and make good choices. Our PRIDE character traits (Perseverance, Respect, Independence, Diversity/Equality/Inclusion, and Empathy) for January are addressed each week and they are: Staying on task; Being an effective problem solver; Expressing empathy/understanding others; and being flexible.
We appreciate your partnership in supporting your child's learning and growth. Working together, we can make this a fantastic year for everyone!
Wishing you all a Happy and Healthy New Year!
Aloha, Steph Brown and Rebecca Hurley

HAPPY HEALTHY NEW YEAR 2025!!
This is a great time to remind all parents/guardians to submit your child’s Updated Annual Physical Examinations which should include ALL mandated screenings (Vision, Hearing, BMI, Postural).
As mentioned in an earlier newsletter, School screenings under 105 CMR 200.000 are intended to supplement, not supplant, oversight of care by the student's primary care provider. Therefore, please provide an updated Physical Exam for your child with all documented screenings so that your child’s educational process is not interrupted for a screening that they have already had. Please advocate that the physician should be doing these screenings at their annual exams. I know there are a couple of physician offices that prefer to pass the responsibility to the schools but, as stated above, it is under the oversight of physicians and part of your child’s comprehensive exam so that any issues can be quickly resolved. Please note that the BMI is the only screening we cannot accept from the physician but you may OPT OUT of this one and the other screenings in writing.
The remaining screenings for this school year are vision and hearing for grades 1-3.

GRADE 1
In math, we are learning strategies to make addition and subtraction easier and we are becoming more fluent with our math facts. Just like learning our high frequency words help us become stronger readers, becoming more fluent with our math facts will help us become stronger mathematicians.
We hope you have a break full of joy and peace. We can’t wait to see what the new year brings.
GRADE 2
Over the past month in reading, we broke down the genres of fiction (fantasy, realistic fiction, folktales) and nonfiction (informational, biography, narrative). Our interactive read alouds have had us exploring stories about narrative nonfiction stories and non-fiction books by Seymour Simon. In phonics, we have explored the predictable vowel teams ai, ay, oi, oy au and aw. We will be wrapping up predictable vowel teams after vacation. Next, we will begin to work on unpredictable vowel teams, ie and ow. In writing, we have been working on adding details and entertaining beginnings to our stories. We will begin to add suspense and learn to write endings to our narrative stories. In math, we concluded Unit 3 on addition & subtraction within 100. Next, we will begin Unit 4: Measurement. We will be learning to measure in inches, feet and yards. Our science mystery next month will have us exploring physical science starting with answering the mystery “Why do we wear clothes?”. Have a great holiday week! See you next year!
GRADE 3
Grade 3 is movin’ and groovin’ with Magnets, Forces and Motion! We have been busy experimenting with engineering activities and will explore magnetism in the classroom! In Math, Unit 4 is on the horizon. We will dive into measurement of liquid, mass, time and fractions on a number line. Mastering multiplication facts is a “must-do!” Please be sure to keep up with Lexia, most students require 12 units each week. We are full speed ahead with narrative reading and writing but January will launch us into informational texts. Thank you for your support! All students are growing and smiling-that’s all we need!

Grade 4
What a fast and fun month! Fourth grade continued learning about nonfiction writing. Students are experts at using word referents, golden bricks, and “what does it look like, why is it important” in their writing. If you're curious about what these are, ask your child! After vacation, we will use our research and notetaking skills to write a research piece. In reading, we have been using grade-level text to retell the important events in a story. Our phonics skills are getting stronger and stronger every day! We are breaking apart multisyllabic words in our reading and using our skills to help our spelling. We will begin studying the explorers in Social Studies next month.
In math, the kids have been learning all about fractions and mixed numbers. They have really been enjoying all of the new workplaces that we have been doing during Math! It is nice to see them engaging in the lessons through games! In Number Corner, they have been learning about and predicting patterns.
Our Science unit on Sounds, Waves, and Communication is coming to a close! They have had a great time trying to communicate in different ways other than talking! The next unit they will be learning about is Earth’s Features and Processes.
Grade 5
Fifth grade continued learning about nonfiction writing. We are continuing our unit on the Revolutionary War.
In fifth grade Math, the kids have been learning about fractions and how they relate to decimals. They have been able to figure out the relationship between decimals and money. In Number Corner, they have been learning about different types of quadrilaterals and what classifications they need.
Our Science unit on Stars and Planets is coming to a close. They have had fun trying to figure out if life would be able to survive on other planets based on what we know about them. Our next unit is Chemical Reactions and Properties of Matter.
