The Arab American National Museum (AANM) is the first and only museum in the United States devoted to documenting and sharing Arab American contributions that shaped the economic, political and cultural landscapes of American life. The Museum also brings to light the shared experiences of immigrants and ethnic groups, paying tribute to the diversity of our nation.
April is Also Autism Acceptance Month!
Solar Eclipse Watch Party! RESPONSE NEEDED ASAP!
We are excited to inform you that on April 8th, 2024, a rare celestial event will occur – a solar eclipse. As part of our school day, we plan to observe this phenomenon with our students. This event presents a unique opportunity for students to witness a natural wonder and learn about the science behind it.
However, as with any activity involving potential risks, we prioritize the safety and well-being of our students above all else. Therefore, we are seeking your permission for your child to participate in the solar eclipse viewing activity.
During the viewing, students will be provided with proper eye protection to ensure their safety while observing the solar eclipse. Our staff will also be present to supervise and guide the students throughout the event.
Please indicate on the form below if you approve or do not approve of your child participating in the solar eclipse viewing activity by Friday, April 5th. If you have any concerns or questions regarding this activity, please do not hesitate to contact us. Thank you for your cooperation and support in enriching our students' learning experiences.
M-Step Testing Begins Next Week!
Starting on Monday, April 8th, 3rd-5th grade will begin taking the "M-STEP". The Michigan Student Test of Educational Progress (M-STEP) is the state assessment used to assess student progress on Michigan’s standards since 2015. M-STEP has fewer multiple choice questions than the previous state assessments and more questions that require problem solving and critical thinking skills, and thus can be a challenge for some students. Consult with your child's teacher to find out the specific days when his/her class will be testing. Please click the link below to gain more insight regarding state testing and to find out what you can do to help your students prepare!
Book Blast Begins Next Tuesday!
Next week we are launching a Book Blast literacy initiative, and the goal of the event is to get as many new, age-appropriate books as possible into the hands of our students. During the book drive, they will be given the opportunity to earn books and other fabulous prizes! After the launch on Tuesday, be on the lookout for a "treasure map" containing more specific details regarding how we'll work together to bring more books into our children's home libraries!
Madison's Got Talent!
On April 15th, we will have "try-outs" for our school talent show! We know many of our students are talented in various ways and we'd love to showcase them here at our school! “Auditions” for “Madison’s Got Talent” will take place right after school, to allow us to preview and approve all acts, as well as provide any suggestions for improvement and prepare for the actual show on May 15th. All interested students should sign up using the form below, so we know how many to expect and can prepare accordingly. Please discuss this with your student, and encourage them to help us show our school community that "Madison's Got Talent!" Remember singing and dancing is great, but they are not the only talents, so feel free to be creative, and come show us what you can do! See the flyer below for more details!
Join us at Texas Roadhouse on Tuesday, April 16th for a scrumptious meal and another chance to support our school's fundraising efforts. All proceeds will be utilized to fund various activities and special events here at school. Your participation will make a significant difference in enhancing the experiences of our students. We look forward to seeing you there!
Dentists 'R Us is Returning!
General Updates & Reminders
Parent Square is Important!
It has come to our attention that many parents have not logged on or signed in to Parent Square yet. Parent Square is now the primary method of communication throughout the district so it is imperative that you all are connected. If you are uncertain of how to do so, please check out the video below or contact the main office so we can assist you. Teachers will still use Dojo for information and reminders that are pertinent to their classrooms, but all mass communication will come from Parent Square. Because Parent Square pulls your contact information directly from MiStar, it is essential to make sure your the information on file is kept current and updated so we are able to reach you whenever necessary. Direct lines of communication are essential for maintaining our partnership in your student's success. Thank you in advance for your cooperation!
Arrival Procedures
Remember, for safety reasons, we can no longer allow parents to enter the building to drop off students and escort them to their designated lines or classrooms. If we permit parents to enter the building while school is in session, this may expose other students to unfamiliar individuals. It is imperative that every parent entering the building during school hours has a cleared background check on file and signs in at the office, including during arrival.
Our students have diligently practiced our arrival procedures for several months and are now capable of independently going to their designated spots. If assistance is required, our staff is readily available to help. Therefore, we kindly ask parents to hug, kiss, and/or say goodbye to their children at the entrance, refraining from entering the building.
In the event of special circumstances necessitating parental assistance, please ensure arrangements are made with the teacher beforehand, and that your background check has been approved. For those needing an updated background check, please contact Mrs. Andrews in the front office.
We appreciate your help with ensuring the safety of all our students.
Dismissal
Please be mindful that dismissal is at 3:25 daily! Our staff is often involved in afterschool activities, meetings and other commitments that prevent them from being able to supervise students at the end of the day. With construction and bad weather, traffic can be heavy around this time, so please allow yourself adequate travel time so you can be here to greet your child when they exit the building. If you are in need of before or after school care, the Learning Tree school-age child care program is available at the Early Childhood Center for a small nominal fee. Students are bused to and from Learning Tree to MES. For more information contact Lisa DiGuilio at 248-543-5465 or click the link below to register. If there will be a change in your child's transportation home, please contact the main office by 2:00 so we have ample time to communicate changes with the teacher.

CKH Focus for April is Perseverance!
What is Perseverance?
Perseverance is the willingness and ability to keep going when things are tough. People who persevere show steadfastness and give the extra effort needed to do something despite how hard it is or how long it takes to reach the goal.
Why focus on Perseverance?
- Perseverance encourages positive self-talk and thinking. When faced with difficult tasks, perseverance helps students reframe with positive thoughts, such as: "I'm not good at this YET!"
- Perseverance develops empathy. Students gain a better understanding of who they are and develop more empathy and compassion for others who may struggle to reach a goal.
- Perseverance sparks personal growth. Pushing through complex tasks builds resilience and helps students discover how capable they are.
