Flint Board of Education Achieves Historic Certification & Excellence Award
The Flint Board of Education proudly announces a historic milestone in its relentless pursuit of educational excellence. On April 18, 2024, at the Genesee County Association Award Ceremony, each member of the board received Level 1: Certified Board Member and Level 2: Award of Merit recognition from the Michigan Association of School Boards (MASB). This achievement serves as a testament to their unwavering commitment to continuous professional growth as School Board Trustees, further fortifying their capacity to serve the school district and the wider community.
MASB training and professional development help board members to keep pace with the fast-moving and complex changes in public education. Last year, more than 1,800 school board members statewide participated in MASB’s professional development program for elected school leaders. The hours devoted to this training are above and beyond the time members spend at their local meetings, events, and reviewing policies and board packets.
Under the leadership of Dr. Joyce Ellis-McNeal, President, and comprised of Vice-President Michael Clack, Secretary Claudia Perkins-Milton, Treasurer Dylan Luna, Assistant Secretary/Treasurer Laura MacIntyre, and Trustees Melody Relerford and Terae King, Jr., the Flint Board of Education has collectively attained the first two levels of awards. This historic feat distinguishes the board as the FIRST in the annals of Flint Community Schools (FCS) to achieve certification as an entire entity and be honored with the esteemed Standard of Excellence Board Award.
The attainment of Level 1: Certified Board Member reflects the board members' successful completion of all 100-Level Certified Board Member (CBA) Classes (101–109). Additionally, their achievement of Level 2: Award of Merit necessitated the fulfillment of Level 1 requirements along with the accumulation of 45 education credits, culminating in their esteemed recognition as recipients of the Standard of Excellence Award. MASB reserves this prestigious accolade for boards where every member has received the Award of Merit, symbolizing their unified dedication to excellence in governance and leadership.
As we celebrate this remarkable achievement, the Flint Board of Education acknowledges that the journey toward excellence is ongoing. With a steadfast commitment to the future of our scholars, the board remains resolute in its mission to ensure comprehensive preparation for the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead. This collective journey towards a brighter future is fueled by the unwavering dedication of the board and the unwavering support of the community.
The Flint Board of Education extends its profound gratitude to the Michigan Association of School Boards for their steadfast recognition and support. With this historic milestone accomplished, the Board reiterates its unwavering dedication to serving the scholars, families, and stakeholders of Flint Community Schools with distinction, integrity, and compassion.
