DUNDEE - CROWN NEWSLETTER
NOVEMBER - DECEMBER 2024
A NOTE FROM OUR PRINCIPAL
It’s hard to believe we are so close to the end of the semester!
Semester grades are very important as those are reported on a student’s transcript and are part of their permanent record. Please monitor your child’s grades on Schoology either through your parent portal or by asking your student to log in and show you their grades.
We encourage students and parents to reach out to teachers to ask questions about their academic progress, how they can improve, and how we can work together to support their students whether they are struggling or thriving.
Please plan to attend parent-teacher conferences on November 25 or 26. Conferences are a great way for us to get to know you and for you to get to know us so we can build a positive relationship to support your children. If you cannot attend on those days, you’re always welcome to reach out to teachers to set up a time to talk on the phone about your child’s progress or set up an in person meeting if needed.
Thank you for all you do to support your child’s academic progress. Sometimes the job of a parent can be hard, as can the job of teacher, but if we work together we can always find a way to support our kids!

CHECK ON YOUR CHILD’S SCHOOL PROGRESS
Parents: It is very important that you check your children's grades on a REGULAR basis in Schoology. D300 does not issue quarterly progress reports. Final semester grades are issued at the end of December. The only way you can monitor a student's grades and academic progress is through Schoology. Ask your children about their grades and encourage them to seek tutoring and support if they are struggling.
UNDERSTANDING CHRONIC ABSENTEEISM
Chronic absenteeism is defined as missing 10% or more of the school year, which translates to approximately 18 or more days of school over a full academic year. This can include both excused and unexcused absences and can have a profound impact on a student's learning and overall development. During the 2023-2024 School year, 39% of Dundee Crown students were considered “Chronically Absent”; this equates to over 1,000 of our students. We understand that there are legitimate reasons for absences, such as illness or family emergencies, and we encourage you to communicate with us if your child will be unable to attend school. However, we also urge you to support and encourage your child to attend school every day, barring any genuine reasons for absence. Consistent attendance is one of the most significant factors influencing academic achievement and overall success in high school. When students attend school regularly, they benefit from:
Continuity of Learning: Each school day builds upon the previous one, and regular attendance ensures that students do not miss out on critical lessons, assignments, or discussions. Development of Responsibility: Regular attendance fosters a sense of responsibility and discipline, which are essential skills for both academic and personal growth.
Enhanced Engagement: Students who are present in class are more likely to engage with the material, participate in discussions, and collaborate with their peers, leading to a deeper understanding of the subjects being taught.
Stronger Relationships: Daily attendance helps students develop meaningful relationships with their teachers and classmates, creating a supportive and positive learning environment.
Early Intervention: Regular attendance allows teachers to identify and address any learning difficulties or personal issues early, providing support and resources to help students succeed.
VACATION DURING SCHOOL DAYS
THE POTENTIAL CONSEQUENCES OF MISSING SCHOOL
We love family vacations! They are great for bonding, creating memories, and learning about the world. But there are some downsides to missing too much school. Older students can fall behind and struggle to catch up. That’s unlikely to have too much of an impact for say, a week-long vacation. But if you are regularly missing school for vacations, it can certainly come in to play. But again, this is primarily going to impact kids missing more than a week of school.
If you do decide to let your student miss school for a vacation, there are steps you need to take:
- Check your student's grades. If he/she is failing, consider postponing the vacation so the student can stay and work on passing failing classes.
- Notify school attendance department at least two weeks prior the first day of absence for a vacation by phone 224-484-5020 or in person. Make sure you complete the required paperwork.
- Reminder: Absences for vacation are considered unexcused absences. You will get notification of unexcused absences.
