7th grade Science
🎉 The 7th Grade Science AIA Fall Rewards Party was on January 16, 2025, from 4:15 PM to 5:15 PM! This special event was our way of honoring the amazing students who scored an impressive 85 or above on the Fall AIA Science Assessment. 🌟
During the spring semester, we will cover the following topics: Earth and the Solar System, Changes to the Earth, Human Impact, Energy Flow, Taxonomy, and the Six Kingdoms of Life. We will also discuss Reproduction and Inheritance, Natural Selection, and Artificial Selection. We will conclude the year with Levels of Organization and the Human Body.
To help support your child's learning, we’d love for you to chat about these topics at home, lend a hand with assignments, encourage students to join us for tutorials and take part in our in-class labs and station activities. Discovering how these concepts work in real life can really boost your child’s understanding and enjoyment of the subject. Thank you for being such an important part of their learning journey!
8th grade Social Studies
The 8th Grade Social Studies Department will have our fourth CBA on Tuesday February 11th covering the Westward Expansion Unit. You should have received the third nine weeks Vocabulary List. We will continue our focus on Vocabulary by giving weekly vocabulary quizzes. At the end of the month, we will also focus on interventions by incorporating Content Newsletters to review prior units. Students will have weekly review assessments to promote content mastery. Please note students will also have Newsletters activities to review at home along with getting the Newsletters signed by a parent.
The upcoming Spring content will be Growth and Expansion, Jackson Era, and Westward Expansion. The Social Studies STAAR will be April 16th.
Social Studies STAAR Interim Assessment - March 20 and 21
7th grade Math
Yay! We made it through semester 1! We are now entering semester 2. Here are some updates from the team
-Technology: Every student needs to have their Chromebooks charged and ready each day. If the Chromebook is damaged or missing, please have them see Mr. Nguyen. Students are coming to school without Chromebook or their Chromebook are damaged. Please, check with your student about the status of their Chromebook and instruct them to see Mr. Nguyen
-Supplies: students need their interactive notebooks daily, their AVID binders, pencils, paper, wired headphones, and Chromebooks daily.
Since this is the start of a new semester, students may have a new interactive notebook for notes in classes. The notebook can be either spiral bound or composition, and must be a 1 subject notebook, specifically for math classes. Students are also expected to have pencils or erasable pens in class, not regular ink pens. Lastly, students are not allowed to use Bluetooth headphones (including Airpods) in class. They must have a pair of wired headphones if they choose to use their personal headphones.
Tutorials:
Moore: Thursdays 4:20- 5:05
Flagler: Monday & Thursday 4:15-5:15
Kent: Tuesdays & Thursdays 4:15-5:15
Students can attend tutorials with any teacher.
I-Ready & IXL:
Students are currently taking the i-ready diagnostic test. After testing, they must complete I ready each night. They must have 45 mins weekly.
IXL will be completed in advisory Thursdays and Fridays. This will be checked and graded.
Math STAAR IA Testing will be February 11th and 13th
8th grade Math
On behalf of the 8th grade math team, we would like to share some important updates for the 2nd half of the school year.
Academic schedule:
Before winter break, we finished our unit on Real Number relationships. To start the semester we will begin our geometry units of study. Pythagorean Theorem, volume of cylinders and cones, along with surface area of 3D figures are the 3 major content areas of focus. Please try to periodically ask your student to explain something they learned in class; this would help keep the content fresh in their mind for class the next day. As an AVID campus, we aim for students to master the skill of organization. It is very important they practice this skill and we ask that you help us by routinely checking their binders. To hold students accountable, binder checks are performed for a minor grade every 3 weeks. Let’s work together to help our students ace their binder checks!
Important upcoming dates:
The IReady mid year diagnostic is the current assessment for students. This diagnostic will measure if students have grown academically in different components of mathematics.
The Spring STAAR Interim Assessment of the district has been scheduled for February 11th and 13th. This test is treated like the STAAR test and is important for your student to perform their best. This data is then used to target areas for growth as we prepare for the state test in April.
Miscellaneous:
Supplies are low! We mathematicians make sure our students are successful by keeping a notebook of all their notes and guided practice for each unit. This requires a lot of glue, and we are in need. Please ensure your student has supplies to help them be successful in class.
Laptop devices are required for students to be at their best academically. Students need to bring their device and chargers every day.
IReady is still a requirement for students to engage in weekly. Students are required to login and complete lessons for at least 45 minutes a week. This will be counted as a homework grade.
7th grade Reading/ Language Arts
7TH GRADE is taking their talents beyond the STARS! We are entering our new unit through the terrors and wonders of space exploration.
Students will explore argument, author’s purpose, and research. Students have been tirelessly working hard on crafting and perfecting extended constructed responses to better their essay writing.
PROJECT PLANET will also commence as students will create their own planets and convince others why they should live on their planet tapping into their argument and persuasion skills.
To add some reading variety, we will start Book Club and be engulfed in the world of choosing their books and collaborating with peers to have book talks and projects.
We are reading and writing to change the world!!!!
RLA STAAR Interim Assessment - January 28th and 30th
8th grade Reading/ Language Arts
8th Grade RLA- The 8th Graders are beginning our new unit: "Finding Your Path". The Essential Question: How do your teenage years Prepare you for Adulthood? This unit explores the transition of being a teenager to becoming a young adult. Students will read text pieces that delve into various topics & cultural references, look into how social media is influencing their lives as young teenagers, and begin projects around those topics. 8th graders also have multiple upcoming assessments: Interim Assessment, District CFA, CBA, TELPAS, and IReady MOY. These next few months will be busy for eighth grade. We are only three months away from the STAAR test! We are excited about what's ahead in the new year!
