Principals Message
The leaves are changing color, temperatures are finally starting to drop, and the night sky is getting darker faster each day. Fall is here and the first month of school has passed.
School is really getting going, our 3rd -5th graders had an assembly to show case the available afterschool activities for the first part of our school year. A interest and permission letter was shared with students. We are proud to offer 4 afterschool activities this session. The activities will take place every Tuesday and Wednesday from right after school to 4:00 p.m. starting on Oct.15th, 2024. Each program will run for about 12 weeks. We will have Danza Azteca (3, 4, 5), SMILE Club (4-5), Oregon Battle of the Books (OBOB- 3,4,5), and Choir Club (3,4,5). There may be some additional permissions needed for some activities. Please talk with your 3rd, 4th or 5th grader about selecting an afterschool activity. Below you will find more information on each activity.
Afterschool activities for Elementary students provide numerous benefits. They offer a structured environment for children to explore interests beyond the classroom, such as sports, arts, or STEM. These activities help develop social skills, teamwork, and confidence, while promoting physical and mental health. Engaging in afterschool programs can also boost academic performance by reinforcing skills like time management and problem-solving. Additionally, they provide a safe, supervised space for students, offering working parents peace of mind.
It truly takes a village to raise a child. Thank you to the families and staff for your continued effort and trust in building our Washington community.
Kind regards,
Alfredo Belanger

Here's what we have been up to lately!
This past Tuesday, our our amazing local bus depot rolled four busses into our school bus loop. That morning all students K-5 took some time to review bus safety procedures and expectations. It is important all students know about bus expectations and emergency procedures. Even if a student doesn't ride the school bus regularly, they might when they go on a school field trip. Safety is important even while riding the bus. Thank you to our bus depot for providing the buses and drivers.
School Committees
Together we work better. All of our staff participated in the second meeting of our school committees. We have several committees that are a crucial and active part of our school workings. They all work by supporting our school goals of improving Reading, Attendance and Parent Engagement. At Washington, we have Parent Engagement, Leadership, PBIS/SEL and a Belonging committee. Our amazing assistants also participate in their own meeting to catalyze collaboration and clarity.
Calling all volunteers
Would you like to be more involved in our school or your child's classroom? Would you like to support upcoming events? Would you like to accompany your student on field trips?
Well, please consider becoming a WES parent volunteer. Parent volunteers will be aware of upcoming events and efforts to create a well-rounded education for all of our students.
Come to our school office to learn the steps to become a volunteer and pick up your volunteer packet.

Student Safety (repeat)
Standard Response Protocol
Our school and district follow the standard response protocols at iloveuguys.com. We have five main kinds of responses that we practice, depending on the kind of emergency we’re facing:
Evacuate - we use this when we need to move students from one location to another for safety reasons. Most commonly, people think about these as “fire drills.” but we might need to evacuate for lots of different reasons. Students have planned paths for exiting and relocation during an evacuation, and they remain unified and supervised outside the building until the Evacuation protocol is lifted.
Hold - we use this when students need to stay out of hallways or other areas, most often either for safety reasons or for when there is a medical emergency and we want to preserve the patient’s dignity and to give first responders a clear path to an exit. Students remain where they are until the Hold protocol is lifted.
Shelter - we use this when students need to take protective actions based on a specific danger or hazard, such as an earthquake or a tornado.
Secure - we use this to secure the perimeter of the school when there is a potential threat outside of school. In the Secure protocol, in addition to exterior doors remaining locked, students remain inside, and no one is allowed to enter or exit school buildings until the Secure protocol is lifted.
Lockdown - we use this to keep students safe when there is imminent danger inside the school. From parental custody disputes to intruders to an active assailant, Lockdown uses classroom and school security actions to protect students and staff from the threat. In a Lockdown protocol, interior doors are locked and students stay silent and out of sight until the Lockdown protocol is lifted.
At a minimum, at Washington Elementary School we practice the following every school year:
At least one monthly Evacuation drill
At least one annual Secure drill
At least two annual Lockdown drills
At least two annual Shelter drills focused on responses to earthquake safety
We have already conducted one evacuation drill with students.
Your child’s safety is our first priority. If you have any questions about our safety drills and response protocols, or any other safety concerns, please don’t hesitate to call us at (971)-983-3050
