Last Week in Pictures!
Introducing MAV Time!
MAV Time is a new way that we are helping students have time to complete academic work during the school day. MAV Time will occur during 4th period on certain Even Days, and it is generally scheduled as the final part of the Extended Period rotation. That means that MAV Time days will generally be scheduled on the next Even Day after Extended Period 7/Extended Period 8.
The first scheduled MAV Time day will be on Tuesday, 9/24/24.
On MAV Time days, students will always go to their Advisory class during 4th period. Most students will remain in their Advisory classrooms for the entire period to work on homework, or complete other academic tasks. Students will also have the option to request to work in the classroom of one of their Period 1-8 teachers if they have a specific task or help that is needed.
To support the MAV Time request process, we will use a digital “Request Form”. Each teacher has a unique Request Form, and they have created a link to their Request Form in their Canvas courses. When a student clicks on the link in the Canvas course, they can complete the Request Form to ask to visit that teacher during the next MAV Time Day.
Students will learn more about MAV Time in Advisory this week on Friday. As noted in that lesson, if a student would like to request to see a teacher on that first Mav Time day of 9/24/24, they should make sure to complete the digital Request Form for that teacher before 2nd period on that day so that their teacher has time to review the request.
Reminder - Later Start Time
A reminder that school will begin one hour later @ 8:45 am; students will be released at 3:30 pm. The front office hours have also been adjusted and will be open from 7:30 - 4:15 pm.

ROAD CONSTRUCTION NOTICE
Parking Permits
A lottery for junior parking permits has been conducted. Juniors have until the end of the day on Tuesday, September 17th to pay for and collect their parking permits. Students can see our bookkeeper to pay the parking permit fee and then go to the Main Office to collect your parking permit. Parking permits that have not been collected at the end of the day on Tuesday, September 17th, will be awarded to juniors who have completed a parking permit application via a lottery system.
As always, to park on campus at Mountainside you need to have a parking permit clearly displayed. You must park in a designated parking spot. Failure to do these things will result in a parking violation notice. Students who accumulate multiple parking violation notices may receive a parking violation sticker that instructs them to come to the main office to speak to Assistant Principal Colby Neal.
PSAT
Mountainside will be hosting the PSAT on Monday, October 28th. We will be offering the PSAT to 200 students in our Main Gym. Juniors will be eligible to register for the PSAT from September 30th until the end of the day on Friday, October 11th. Sophomore students will be eligible to register for the remaining seats from Monday, October 14th through Friday, October 18th at the end of the day.
To register for the PSAT students will need to see the bookkeeper at MHS and pay a $20 PSAT fee. Students will then need to take their receipt to the Counseling office and see Ms. Bennet in order to complete the registration process. We will send reminders to students who have registered as well as pertinent information for test day. Please let me know if you have any questions.
Art Department Donation Request
The Art Department needs full-sized aprons and old towels. Aprons help protect our students' clothing when they're using messy materials. Old, ratty towels make excellent painting rags and help eliminate waste from paper towels. All donated items need to be clean. Please drop off your donations at the front office. Thank you for supporting the arts at Mountainside!
Free School Meals for Students
All students in the Beaverton School District will be offered one free breakfast and one free lunch during the 2024-25 school year. Every student is enrolled automatically in the program.
Student meals include an entree, fruit and vegetable sides, and one milk. Students must take a complete meal to be eligible for the no-cost option; students who only opt for milk do not qualify for free milk. This is a federal requirement meant to encourage students to eat a well-balanced meal.
A la carte items such as milk, second entrees, and snack items will be sold when students have a positive account balance or cash.
From the MHS Library Technology Department
A reminder to sign up your student for Chromebook Insurance: Student Device Damage and Loss Protection Program for the 2024-2025 school. The insurance fee is only $20 and can be paid at the bookkeeper or through the Online Payment System. If your student qualifies for Free/Discounted District Fees in our district, the fee will be waived.
Since the fee for damaging a Chromebook without insurance can be as much as $440, we want to reach out and make sure that you know what could happen if this fee is not taken care of.
The window for opting-in to the insurance program will close on Thursday, October 10th. After that time, any damages that occur to unprotected devices are not protected and will be the responsibility of the student and family.
MOUNTAINSIDE HIGH SCHOOL CELLPHONE POLICY
Starting the 24-25 school year, ALL BEAVERTON SCHOOL DISTRICT OPTION AND HIGH SCHOOLS will have a consistent policy designed to continue to refocus student attention to learning, improve student mental health, and teach our students healthier habits of mind.
To ensure a focused and productive learning environment, CELL PHONE USE DURING CLASS TIME WILL BE PROHIBITED. Family communication is essential and students may use their cellphones before school, during passing times, during lunch, and after school each day. Students are prohibited from using cell phones in the hallways or bathrooms during class periods, and the cell phones must remain packed away when they leave the classroom for breaks.
If a student uses a cell phone in class, the phone will be immediately collected and can be picked up from the front office after school. We understand that some families may have unique circumstances that require their students to have access to a phone during school hours for medical reasons. We will work with these families to make the necessary accommodations. In the event that your child must call a parent or guardian, students may obtain a pass from their classroom teacher and use a phone in the office to make the call. In the case of a family emergency, families can call the office, and staff will connect the caller with the student or relay a message. These are the exceptions to the policy, and we ask for your understanding and cooperation in adhering to the general rule of no cell phone use during class time.

PARENT DROP OFF PLAN
Traffic during the beginning of a school year can be very busy as new parents and new student drivers learn our system. PLEASE BE PATIENT with one another. You can help by leaving the house early and following the directions below:
Adults who wish to drop off students in the morning, or pick students up in the afternoon, are asked to do so using the student parking lot entrance off of 175th Ave. Please stay in the outside lane as your car comes toward the school and continue to pull forward until you reach the drop-off area located by the exit doors of the auditorium. Pulling all the way forward is critical as those who stop and drop off short of the zone end up causing backups behind their car. This creates a safety hazard, as other cars will be coming in from the light and won't have a place to go. Within the first 100 yards of the entrance to the lot, there is a red curb fire lane. There is no stopping or parking in this zone. If cars are backed up to that area, please pull around and circle back through the parking lot. Reminder, this is the STUDENT PARKING lot. PLEASE DRIVE SLOW AND BE CAUTIOUS.
PLEASE DO NOT USE THE STAFF LOT for pick-up or drop-off. The Staff Lot is reserved for Staff and for school buses.
We appreciate your assistance in keeping our parking lot safe for our students and community.
IB / MYP
IBDP
MHS is an International Baccalaureate World School which offers two different IB programs. All Grade 9 and 10 students take MYP (Middle Years Program) courses and students in Grade 11 and 12 take DP (Diploma Program) courses. The IBDP is a rigorous and highly valued qualification recognized by universities around the world. For students, success in the IB often results in advanced standing, course credit, scholarships, and other admissions-related benefits at many universities. Students seeking this qualification must complete standardized examinations scored by the IB.
At MHS, all juniors and many seniors are engaged in “IB For All” by taking, at a minimum, IB Language & Literature and IB Individuals & Societies. Many also take an IB Math class. We believe that all students can and should access advanced curriculum, whether a full diploma candidate, a course candidate, or a curious learner.
In the May 2024 exam session, MHS students scored above the global average! Bravo to alumni Ryan Lu and Kalina Rencher who earned 42 and Ethan Martin who earned 41 points (out of 45) - a stellar achievement! We are proud of all our students who challenge themselves by taking and/or testing in IB classes.
Statistics for the May 2024 session can be seen below:
MYP
Hello Mountainside Community! My name is Nicholas Godsmark and I am the new IB MYP (Middle Years Program) Coordinator for Mountainside High School, but I also teach IB Language and Literature to many of your seniors; this is my seventh year at MHS. Before arriving here, I taught English for three years at Shen Wai International School, an authorized IB school for students aged 4-18, located in Shenzhen, China.
All of our 9th and 10th grade students here are IB MYP students. So: Why IB MYP? It’s such a valid question and when someone asks it they are practicing one of my favorite aspects of the program–inquiry. The MYP requires students to think critically about big ideas and concepts and ask (better and better) questions, rather than to simply memorize facts. Providing avenues for students to inquire based on their interests leads not only to depth of learning, but encourages them to continue the practice for their entire lives.
Be curious! Please let me know if you have any questions about the MYP here at nicholas_godsmark@beaverton.k12.or.us or come visit me at Back to School Night on September 25.
