Note from the Principal
Welcome Back BCE families! We hope you have had an amazing and relaxing summer. Our teachers are working hard to get things ready for students. It is going to be an amazing school year. We can feel it!
As we head into this new year, we believe a school is not merely a building. It is the people and relationships within the building that truly unlock the magic it beholds. We are so excited that BCE continues to implement Relationship Centered Learning (Formerly known as Restorative Practices) to help our entire school community connect before content. Relationship centered learning will allow for deeper discovery of who we are as individuals, develop greater relationships with those we share space with, and attain accountability for the impacts of our actions when a relationship is strained or fractured.
As a staff we developed common values for the campus so when we make decisions or need to empower students there is an anchor for why we are doing things. We wanted to share these with our community so that you know what we value as a campus. Our hope is that when you interact with students and staff members you will have a common language for communicating and that these values will provide you with clear expectations for how we treat each other.
Our Core Values at BCE:
Kindness: Intentionally choosing thoughts and actions that positively impact the lives of others.
Positive Attitude: Choosing to find the good in every situation.
Responsibility: Making the best decision for yourself and others
Continuous Growth: Commitment to working together to learn and grow emotionally, socially, and academically.
Equity: Providing each person with what they need to be successful.
With all of that being said, teaching is a very demanding profession and we are seeing more and more amazing teachers leave education each year. Our goal as administrators is to support our staff in having a healthy and positive work/home balance. What does this mean? We want them to leave and go home to spend time with friends and family and not spend time answering emails or finishing school work. Their work day ends at 3:15 and even though many stay beyond that, we want them to know that it is okay for them to prioritize what they need to accomplish and then be intentional with investing in themselves. If they don’t, we will see them burnout. Happy, healthy, teachers in turn make happy and engaged students! Please know that teachers will have 24-48 school hours to return emails and if you need to get them that day, please call the school during their conference period only. In order to ensure that your concerns are addressed thoroughly and accurately, please reach out to the classroom teacher first. If after that point you feel your concerns have not been addressed, feel free to reach out to an administrator. Please note that it would be very beneficial if you pre-arrange a meeting with your child’s teacher. It is important to honor their time. Please help us in this endeavor so we can help our teachers have a balanced work/home life.
We are so excited to continue building positive relationships with our families. Remember we are a team and together we can help all of our students feel safe, connected, and successful. See you soon!
Jenny Strong, Principal
Welcome Walk
We are so excited to continue our favorite back to school tradition. Our Welcome Walk will take place this Thursday, August 8th from 5-7:30 p.m.
For those families who are new to Brushy Creek Elementary, Welcome Walk is your first opportunity to see who your child’s teacher will be for the school year. Our teachers come to your house to introduce themselves to you. It’s a really quick meet and greet outside of your house as they may have 22 or more families to visit. If you will not be home and prefer a phone call instead, please call the front office at 512-428-3000 to let them know.
Our staff will only visit houses of students who live in our attendance zone. If you live outside of the BCE attendance zone, your child’s teacher will contact you via phone.
We look forward to seeing you soon!
Student Placement
A great deal of time, effort and thought has gone into the process of student placement for the 2023-204 school year. We are excited for your student(s) to meet their teacher at Welcome Walk on Thursday, August 8th from 5-7:30 pm.
Please know that careful consideration was given as we utilized input from staff and families as well as student learning styles. Classrooms have been balanced academically and socially. Our class lists are structured to provide equitable class sizes at each grade level. Moving students is difficult without causing imbalances and inequities.
Thank you so much for being positive with your child and helping him or her understand that it is impossible to place all students with a preferred best friend or teacher. ALL of our staff works hard to make school a positive experience for ALL students. Brushy Creek is eagerly looking forward to enriching your child’s life. Thank you for understanding that it can take a few weeks for a child to acclimate to a new grade, peer group and teacher. It is going to be a great year for ALL!
School Supply Drop Off
Monday, August 12th, from 9:30 - 11:30 am, we're hosting our School Supply Drop-Off event. This is your chance to visit your child's classroom and get them all set for the exciting year ahead!
Please bring your child's school supplies and join us to meet their teachers, see the classrooms, and get a glimpse of the wonderful learning environment they have prepared. We're thrilled to welcome you, and this is an excellent opportunity for your child to feel at ease before the big day!
Remember, on the first day of school, parents won't be allowed to walk students in. So, make sure to take advantage of this special occasion to make your child's transition smoother and more enjoyable. We can't wait to see you on August 12th!
Arrival and Dismissal
The beginning of the year can be a little hectic as we become familiar with procedures for arrival and dismissal. Thank you for being patient and flexible and we navigate through these processes. Here are some friendly reminders as we head into next week:
- Doors will open at 7:20 a.m. Only students will be allowed into the building during arrival and dismissal. They will go straight to their classroom or to the cafeteria to get breakfast.
- During arrival, walkers may enter through door numbers 1 and 6. Students will NOT be allowed to enter the new building through the front. They must enter through the old building.
- Car riders will enter through the main doors, ie. door #1.
- Students must exit their car closest to the school building.
- Parents must remain in their car at all times.
- If traffic backs up in the car rider line (exit) making a left hand turn, we highly recommend turning right instead. There are several alternative routes to get you back onto Great Oaks.
- During dismissal, front walkers will be picked up at the bike rack or field by the bike rack.
- All back walkers will be dismissed from the bike racks in the back where the portables used to be. Please do not congregate near the building doors. Students will not be released to parents until they reach the bike racks.
- Please do not walk up to the front doors to collect a car rider or a front walker. If your child is a car rider you must remain in the car rider line.
- Please continue to go to the crosswalks if you park in the church parking lot or along Stonebridge. It is much safer than crossing through traffic.
- The back parking lot is just for staff, cars with yellow tags, buses, and daycare. Please do not drop off your child in the back if they do not meet one of the criteria listed above.
- If you are wanting to change your child's mode of transportation for one day, please fill out the form that can be found on the BCE website before 2:00 pm. Please don't email your teacher due to the fact that they only check email during their planning period and after school. The link on the website goes straight to the office so we can ensure to notify your child's teacher of the change.
