An Update from Hough Elementary

May 13th, 2025 Newsletter
Principal Update
Dear Hough Families,
As we enter the final weeks of the school year, Hough is buzzing with energy, creativity, and celebration! Our students have been hard at work and play, and the end-of-year excitement is certainly in full swing. I am sure you are feeling the energy at home as well! I want to take a moment to thank our Hough PTO and families for showing the Hough staff so much love, support, and gratitude last week. Staff certainly felt appreciated by all of the kind gestures from students and parents and are enjoying delicious lunch meals throughout this month to celebrate! Thank you for thinking of us!
Author Visit Inspires Young Creators
Last week, we had the joy of welcoming a special guest author, Nicole Hewitt, to Hough! Students were engaged in interactive poetry workshops that sparked imagination and encouraged self-expression. From silly rhymes to heartfelt verses, our students tapped into their creative voices and had the opportunity to explore writing in such a creative way. Thank you to the PTO for planning this event that was the perfect complement to our final Character Strong monthly theme.
Field Day is Coming!
Mark your calendars—our annual Field Day is just around the corner at Citizens Park for 1st -5th graders and at Hough for kindergarten students. This beloved tradition will take place on May 22nd (rain date May 23rd) and promises a full day of teamwork, friendly competition, and outdoor fun. We appreciate all of our PTO volunteers that make this event possible! Don't forget the sunscreen and water bottles!
End-of-Year Celebrations & Milestones
Classroom celebrations, culminating projects, and special moments are unfolding across the building as students wrap up another wonderful year of learning. From kindergarteners sharing their reading skills and math facts to upper-grade students taking final unit assessments and completing projects, we’re so proud of how far everyone has come. Our fifth graders had middle school visits last and are looking forward to a fun Friday night together as they are ready to "Escape to Middle School". We welcomed our future Hough kindergarteners last week at our Kindergarten Welcome and look forward to having them with us next year.
As I reflect on the year, I'm filled with gratitude—for our incredible students, our dedicated staff, and our supportive families. Thank you for being part of what makes Hough such a special place to learn and grow.
With appreciation,
Principal Schumacher

In the meantime, please be sure to locate your child's grade-level t-shirt (see above picture - every student received a shirt in September) in advance, as these will be worn on Field Day. Students should bring a "home lunch" to eat at Field Day. The PTO will provide popsicles and watermelon. Pack water (bottles can be refilled), apply sunscreen and bug spray.
Fundraising/Playground Update - We are very excited to announce that our fundraising efforts, allowed us to surpass this year’s goal! We have raised over $52,000. We are so grateful for your dedication to the playground. We know this is a huge undertaking for our community. The district is taking the next steps, and Mrs. Schumacher will be sure to post pictures of the progress over the summer
Barrington Giving Day Volunteers - Barrington Giving Day’s Spring Event is going on through May 17th. We need volunteers (must be 18 years or older) to help families select items and restock inventory in the new Pop-Up Store in The Arboretum of South Barrington.
