ELRC (PreK)
Classroom Spotlight: Reggio Emilia Preschool 2 year olds

Molly Warwick, Assistant Teacher
The ELRC Superhero Team
The ELRC’s youngest Tigers have had a rewarding school year. Our child-centered curriculum has taken us to many interests and projects. It is quite fitting that the children’s current interest is in Superheroes! During our journey, we are focusing on the positive attributes of such powerful people who help the world!
Focusing on the superpowers of friendship, being kind, and helping others, the children recently earned their capes and masks. They also decided to make superhero creatures and present a show. We have found our capes instrumental to sing and dance to superhero music, give courage for attending Dinosaur Day and thinking about each of our own superpowers! One child claimed, “I am the Tigers basketball team!”, while another summed up most by declaring “My superpower is growing up!”
Campus School (K-5th Grade)
Third Grade Empowerment: Challenging Kids to Think and Advocate
Mrs. Moorhead, 3rd grade
Third grade teachers are preparing students to think outside the box by empowering students and teaching them to advocate for change. Through discovery in English Language Arts class, led by Mrs. Moorhead, students have been looking at three main issues surrounding fresh water use; access to water, demands on water, and water pollution. This unit problem-based learning unit spans into both the Science and math classrooms. Students have been researching and deepening their knowledge through their own research. This unit also brought about collaboration with the students’ peers and community partners.
This past week, the Water On Wheels (WOW) truck came to Campus School. This mobile learning unit is a teaching tool that allows students to expand their knowledge about the water cycle and its impact on daily life. This mini-museum is an outreach program about water from the Center for Applied Earth Science and Engineering Research (CAESER) at the University of Memphis. The ultimate goal is for students to feel empowered to make a change in the world around them. Next up in this unit, the students will plan a peaceful water protest. Additionally, the students will be creating and presenting water public service announcements to spread awareness about these real world issues. This unit will also include a novel study conducted in science class. As humanitarians, our third grade Tigers are learning to take ownership for the world around them.
Voyage Solar System Model
Mrs. Pillow, Campus School STEM/PBL Coordinator
The Voyage Solar System Model was installed and celebrated at the University of Memphis during the month of March. Located on the University of Memphis main campus along a North-South primary walkway, this installation allows students to experience Earth’s place within our Solar System. Aligning with Tennessee State Standards, this experience provided the opportunity for a “being there experience” for our students, right next door. Seeing the to-scale size of the planets helps our Tigers comprehend how small and fragile Earth is within our Solar System. This perspective encourages students to see the importance of studying planet Earth and being life-long learners.
The Voyage Solar System Model was created by Dr. Jeffrey Bennett. Campus School third and fifth graders had the special opportunity to attend a guest lecture by him the day of the “grand opening” of the solar system model. Dr. Bennett read his own book Totality! An Eclipse Guide in Rhyme and Science and explained the science behind eclipses. The students also had the opportunity for a question and answer session. Two Campus School students designed the art for the program for the grand opening ceremony. This piece was facilitated by Art Specialist, Ms. Charli Ardrey. Additionally, Campus School fifth graders, led by Music Specialist Ms. Erin Johnson, performed a cannon about the planets for the attendees. This was a special community-building science experience. Campus School loves partnering with the Department of Physics and Materials Science, especially Mrs. Joanne Rhodes who made all this happen. Make sure to stop by the Voyage Solar System Model for an on-campus “being there experience”!
Pi Day
Mrs. Pillow, Campus School STEM/PBL Coordinator
March 14, 2023
For Pi Day on March 14 (3/14), our Tigers celebrated in style! One of our 5th grade STEM Ambassadors planned a catalog of Pi-themed activities for teachers to use in their classrooms. Fifth grade students celebrated their math skills by creating homemade pies and sharing them with their classmates and teachers. Additionally, Marco's Pizza graciously donated pizza pies for all of the faculty and staff for lunch. Celebrating math is an important way for students to experience real world connections to their studies.
This enthusiasm for teaching and learning is part of what makes Campus School so special!
CLUE collaboration
Ms. Virden, Campus School CLUE
As a meaningful conclusion to their unit on the book Number the Stars, 5th grade Campus School CLUE students joined Grahamwood Elementary’s 5th grade CLUE students to hear from a local Holocaust survivor, Mr. Jack Cohen. He mesmerized the students with his stories of bravery, as he recalled his experience escaping the Nazi invasion in Greece.
In addition to the speaker, the students participated in a STEAM activity that reflected how the people of Denmark worked tirelessly to rescue the Danish Jewish people by boating them to safety in Sweden, much like the characters in the novel. The students’ construction challenge was not without constraints. The constructed boats had to hold and support as many marbles as possible. Students worked in teams from both schools, and learned so much about community, team building, and history.
Raven Art
Ms. Alles, 2nd grade
Second grade classrooms wrapped up a unit about Native American folk tales. The culminating project was a retelling of the Pacific Northwest Inuit Tale, Raven. Students used their creative arts skills to create a Raven collage.
Dixon Art to Grow
Mrs. Pillow, Campus School STEM/PBL Coordinator
Campus School first grade had the opportunity to host Dixon ‘Art to Grow’ in their classrooms. Connecting to their unit on Life Science about ‘From Molecules to Organisms: Structures and Processes”, students learned about bees and ultraviolet light. Students explored compound bee eyes and looked at how this adaptation benefits bees. Students were also given the guiding question: Why would a flower have colors and patterns designed to attract insects? Students created a project within the lesson that included a colorful flower and a bee. To end the lesson, students were able to explore their flower projects using 3d glasses. This was such a fun project, and Campus School always loves collaborating with the Dixon Art Gallery and Gardens!
University Middle School (6th Grade - 8th Grade)
Spring PBL Exhibition
April 2023
UMS 6th and 7th grade students showcased their PBL projects this past month. Students in 6th grade answered the question: How accurately can we predict the success or failure of a system? Students in 7th grade answered the question: How can we use lessons from the past to drive development for future communities? Congratulations to these students on participating in such an amazing exhibition! Stayed tuned for the 8th grade PBL Exhibition, that will be hosted on May 16th.

Psychological Strengths in Youth Research (FOCUS: Building a Growth Mindset)
University Middle School Parents
Beginning in spring 2023, University Middle is partnering with College of Education faculty at the University of Memphis (Dr.’s Chris Mueller and Denise Winsor) and Temple University (Dr. Lilya Jiang) to explore how Growth Mindset impacts social and emotional well-being, motivation and engagement, and achievement with University Middle School students (6th-8th grade). Growth mindset (e.g., “I can get better with effort”) vs. fixed mindset (e.g., “My intelligence and abilities are fixed and cannot change”) comes out of the work of Stanford psychologist Carol Dweck and has been shown to promote resilience in students especially when facing challenge. Specifically, we will be focusing on how parents and teachers impact the development of growth mindset. We are recruiting PARENTS of 6th, 7th, and 8th grade students for this study and need your help!
If you would like to participate in this study, please see the recruitment flier titled “Psychological Strengths in Youth Research” that is linked below. A link with next steps is provided on the flier (attached). Thank you!
UHS Gentleman's League
University High School
Gentleman's League is a school-based mentorship program for young African American males. Through their curriculum, the participants receive mentorship, academic support, and social emotional development. The workshops are centered on strengthening the connection African American males need to progress in life. Recently, the UHS chapter of Gentleman's League visited the National Civil Rights Museum to foster that connection to their ancestral lineage and see a national staple right in their community.
Thank you to Dr. McKenzie, School Counselor at UHS, for leading this group, and Mr. Patton, Front Office Coordinator, for serving as a mentor.

Campus School STEAM Ambassadors
Hosted by Betsy Pillow, Campus School STEM/PBL Coordinator
There is a special opportunity for Campus School fourth and fifth grade student leaders. At the beginning of the year, students were given the opportunity to apply for a special program called the ‘Campus School STEAM Ambassadors’. This program was started at Campus School a few years ago by the fourth and fifth grade Science teachers. It is currently led and facilitated by Campus School STEM/PBL Coordinator, Betsy Pillow. The group is comprised of about 20 fourth and fifth graders. The students have “expert” groups, but are always able to assist groups outside their “expert” group. Groups include: tech gurus, green team, public speakers, art experts, and science/engineering/math experts. Students meet as-needed to plan special events for the school. Meetings are either by “team” or by grade-level. The purpose of this is to give students experience leading and working towards shared goals with different groups of students.
The STEAM ambassadors have a shared Google Classroom that is used to communicate ideas and meeting dates and notes. One example of a completed STEAM ambassador project was when the fifth graders took the reigns on ‘Pi Day’ and created lesson plans and activities for the school to implement. Additionally, students assist with planning other school STEAM celebrations and assist with school tours and interviews. The fourth graders did a unit on inventions, which included hosting the ‘STEM Smart’ family gathering about inventions by children. Students also celebrated tasty inventions by researching how a yummy treat was invented, then sharing out with other STEM ambassadors the history of the invention and bringing the treat to share with the other students. Currently, students are meeting to plan Campus School Earth Week. Student meetings typically occur during lunchtime in the courtyard, which provides a sociable and collaborative alternative to a traditional meeting model. These meetings are an opportunity to build morale among this special group of student leaders and provide them with the opportunity to share ideas and STEAM interests with students from other homerooms. It is also a special treat for students to eat outside in the school’s courtyard space. These student leaders are committed to the nature of STEAM and enjoy planning and participating in activities at Campus School.

University Middle & High School 3 Minute Monologue Competition
Saturday, April 29 @ 10:00 am
Orgel Educational Center
On Saturday, April 29, 2023 the Orgel Education Center will host the first annual University Middle & High School 3 Minute Monologue Competition. All middle and high school students attending public schools in Shelby County are eligible to compete.
Orgel Compliance Coordinator and local actor, Hal Harmon conceived the idea due in part to the lack of Drama competitions offered to students in public schools. The concept is simple and easily executed. Students write an original monologue utilizing a specific theme, and ELA and Theatre Arts teachers from Memphis and Shelby County schools determine the eligible entries to submit for competition. Schools are sent specific guidelines for eligibility. There are two categories, writing and performance, and two grade divisions. This year there will be 20 students competing from six different schools. In the middle school division there are seven contestants and thirteen participants in the high school division.
University Middle school's contestants are Maya Brown and Clara Hedge, both in 7th grade and Alleia Bakker in 9th grade. This year's theme is "I AM". The competition is being judged by members of the Memphis theater community. The competition begins at 10:00 AM and is located in the auditorium located on the first floor. Students, parents and staff are welcomed to attend!

HEY CAMPUS MUSICIANS!
We are currently looking for a few more musicians to round out the Campus School FAM JAM Band. If you have attended this event in the past, then you know that one of the most exciting things is watching your classmates and their parents rock out on stage together.
If you or your child has experience playing an instrument or singing, and would be available for several rehearsals leading up to the event, please contact parent organizer Graham Burks at campusfamjam@gmail.com.
We are especially looking for parent-student combos if you and your child are both musicians!
Please include the following info:
- Musician name and grade (if not a parent)
- Singer or instrument played
- Two song suggestions that you would like to perform for possible inclusion in the performance setlist
- Availability to rehearse on Sundays in April and May leading up to the event on May 9.
Remaining slots will be filled on a first come first serve basis, so please get in touch soon if you would like to perform with the band!
