Principal's Message
Dear Angell Community,
We have been fortunate to have a relationship with Oakland University that affords us the opportunity to help train interns and full-time student teachers. It is a privilege to do our part to help prepare the future of our business however it is also a lot of work. Thank you to Mrs. Hoerner, Mrs. Sturtz and Ms. Huffer for taking on this great responsibility. Congratulations to Ms. Duncan, Ms. Pratt, and Mr. Flaugher as they wrapped up their student teaching placements this past Friday. Each were honored at Respect Circle on Thursday. We wish them the best of luck and look forward to seeing them back at Angell as guest teachers for the remainder of the school year.
Our PTA hosted another great night time event for our families this past Wednesday. The 2nd Annual STEM Night was a great success. Thank you to everyone who attended. Below are some pictures of the event for your pleasure.
Our PTA is already looking forward to next year and wants to offer you a great opportunity to save time and money on school supplies. They are once again offering the 1st Day of School Supplies program for all Angell families. If you have never participated before here is what you need to know.
The supply lists are created by our grade level teams and are designed to provide your child with everything they might need next year.
To get your best price it is advantageous to order now.
All supply kits are delivered directly to Angell School and delivered to classrooms in the fall. This means you will not have to visit any stores to pick up supplies.
Check out the ordering information below.
Also, take notice of our Counselor's Corner that highlights their presentation from our last PTA meeting. We appreciate the year-long teaching offered by Mrs. Chudler and Mrs. Greager. It has made our PTA meetings very informative and has provided many great tips.
I also wanted to wish Happy Easter to all who celebrate. May the day be filled with blessings and wonderful family memories.
Take care and enjoy the rest of the weekend! See you on Monday.
Sincerely,
Vince Gigliotti
Angell Principal

1st Day School Supplies
ANGELL ELEMENTARY SCHOOL parents, have you seen the price of eggs lately? Everything is going up, even school supplies at Walmart, Target, and Amazon. But not at 1st Day School Supplies. We locked in the lowest price months ago!
Counselor's Corner
At the PTA meeting this month we talked about restorative practices, which are a set of principles and approaches used to build a positive school community where students learn to understand how their actions affect others. Instead of focusing only on punishment when rules are broken, restorative practices help students take responsibility, repair any harm done, and make better choices in the future. This approach encourages open communication, empathy, and problem-solving. At Angell we use structured gatherings where we guide conversations to help students talk about their feelings, solve conflicts peacefully, and strengthen relationships with their classmates and teachers. Restorative practices do include consequences, but they look a little different. Instead of just giving a punishment, the focus is on helping students understand the impact of their behavior and take responsibility for making things right or making the repair.
You can see a copy of our slide show here, which includes the April edition of the Action for Happiness calendar, Active April. Each month I like to find a couple of action items to work on. This month I chose “Make sleep a priority and go to bed in good time” and “Meet a friend outside for a walk and a chat”. See what speaks to you.
Angell PTA STEM Night
We had a great time at our Annual PTA STEM Night. Enjoy some pictures from the event on Wednesday, April 16, 2025. Thank you to our PTA for another great event!

MSTEP Information
Our 3rd, 4th and 5th grade students are scheduled to take the Michigan Student Test of Educational Progress (M-STEP). The testing window is April 7 - May 16, 2025. The M-STEP is the state assessment used to assess student progress on Michigan’s standards since 2015. M-STEP has fewer multiple-choice questions than the previous MEAP assessment and more questions that require problem solving and critical thinking skills. M-STEP is aligned to Michigan’s challenging learning standards and is administered each spring to students in grades 3-8. M-STEP measures skills in English language arts (ELA), mathematics, social studies, and science. M-STEP assessments in English language arts (ELA) and mathematics use computer adaptive testing (CAT). CAT tests are customized for each student for a more accurate measurement of what students know.
Our testing schedule is posted below for your reference. Here are a few tips to consider as your child prepares for M-STEP:
- Make sure they get a good night's sleep the night before each test.
- Make sure they have a healthy breakfast, hearty lunch and protein-based snack for each testing day.
- Encourage them to do their best and stay focused for each testing session.
- Encourage them to take their time and double check their answers. M-STEP is not a timed test.
- Encourage them to read all directions before beginning the test or answering any questions.
- Encourage them to read the answer choices before reading the question.
- Encourage them to take a break if they feel tired or overwhelmed.
- Encourage them to have a positive attitude.

Angells Around the World
Our PTA is hosting a STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) night on Wednesday, April 16th from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm for all Angell families. We hope you can make the event. Our PTA has also started the work needed to host our annual Angells Around the World Event on May 8th. Here is some important information from the PTA if you would like to participate or attend the event.
Event: 2nd Annual DEI Celebration
Date: May 8th, 6:00 PM – 8:00 PM
Location: Blacktop by the Playground
Join us for our 2nd Annual DEI Celebration, a fun, relaxed event where we celebrate and learn about the many diverse cultures around us! This event is a great opportunity for families to share their cultural heritage in a simple, enjoyable way.
How it Works:
Sign Up: Families will sign up to represent a country or culture. You’ll create a fun and simple poster or display with information about that culture—such as traditional foods, important landmarks, or interesting facts. You can use the google form that’s attached to sign up.
Optional Creative Touches: Feel free to add your own creative touches to your table, such as playing music, offering a small cultural activity (like coloring), or bringing a dish or snack that represents your culture. All these extras are optional, so keep it as easy and fun as you like!
Table Setup: Each family will be provided with a table to set up their display. You can decorate it in whatever way helps share your culture.
Special Note for Families with Concerts: We understand that Kindergarten and 1st-grade students have their concerts that evening at 6:00 PM and 6:45 PM. We hope this will help boost attendance by allowing families to attend the concert first and then swing by the DEI event afterward!
If you have any concerns or need to leave your table during the event (due to your child’s performance), please don’t hesitate to sign up! You’re welcome to step away from your table at any time.
We look forward to seeing everyone there and celebrating our diverse cultures!
Please reach out to Nicole Feys if you have any questions. Nicolefeys4@gmail.com

When to Exclude a Child from School
Many illnesses do not require exclusion. However, children may be excluded if the illness prevents the child from participating comfortably in school activities or if there is risk of spread of harmful disease to others. Criteria include:
1. Severely ill: A child that is lethargic or less responsive, has difficulty breathing, or has a rapidly spreading rash.
2. Fever: A child with a temperature of 100.4°F or greater AND behavior changes or other signs or symptoms (e.g., sore throat, rash, vomiting, or diarrhea). The child should not return until 24 hours of no fever, without the use of fever-reducing medications.
3. Diarrhea: A child has two loose or watery stools. The child should have no loose stools for 24 hours prior to returning to school. Exception: A healthcare provider has determined it is not infectious. Diarrhea may be caused by antibiotics or new foods a child has eaten.
4. Vomiting: A child that has vomited two or more times. The child should have no vomiting episodes for 24 hours prior to returning.
5. Abdominal pain: A child with abdominal pain that continues for more than two hours or intermittent pain associated with fever or other symptoms.
6. Rash: The child with a rash AND has a fever or a change in behavior. Exclude until the rash subsides or until a healthcare provider has determined it is not infectious.
7. Skin sores: A child with draining sores on an exposed area that cannot be covered with waterproof dressing.
8. Certain communicable diseases: Students and staff diagnosed with certain communicable diseases (e.g strep throat, norovirus, influenza, hand foot mouth, pinkeye, etc. ) may have to be excluded for a certain period of time. Please call the office and report if your child has been diagnosed with a communicable disease.
9. Covid- We are still no longer contract tracing for covid and do not need to quarantine for 5 days. Everyone is able to return when they are "well," meaning fever free for 24 hours, without fever reducing medications. It is left up to the individual when they feel well. Also, masks are optional and not required per Oakland County Health Department.
If you have any questions, please feel free to reach out to Nurse Rose or the school office.
Important Safety Reminders
- ROLLING THROUGH THE STOP SIGN NEAR CROSSING GUARDS: I have noticed that several drivers are not coming to a COMPLETE STOP at our designated crossing areas. This is not only unsafe but illegal. Please slow down, come to a complete stop and wait for our crossing guard to completely clear the traffic area before moving forward.
- PARKING AND DROPPING OFF IN THE STAFF PARKING LOT: The staff parking lot located near the south end of the school between the school and the tennis courts is reserved for staff only. We have one family (due to a temporary medical issue) that has permission to use the lot for drop off and pick up. Without specific permission absolutely no other community members should enter the staff parking lot with their vehicle. For many this may seem convenient but for our students and staff this creates a very serious safety and access issue. I am directing anyone who is currently using our parking lot to wait for students or to get closer to drop off points to stop this practice immediately. If you have relatives helping with drop-off and pick-up please make sure you pass this information along.
Please be advised that I will work with public safety to encourage tickets for anyone who continues to create these safety issues. Your cooperation is both appreciated and expected moving forward.
