Rio Norte News - April 19, 2024
A Note From the Principal
Hello River Hawk Families,
What a busy week we've had! This past Saturday was that All District Junior High Basketball Tournament (story later in newsletter) and while both teams put forth a great effort, our Girls Basketball Team went all the way to the Championship Game and took 2nd place overall. We are so proud of our girls!
As you know, we also had state testing this week and our students have been doing an outstanding job! Our ASB helped to create a festive atmosphere on campus and students, overall, seemed in high spirits. They definitely appreciated the minimum days and not having class, too. We are hopeful it will make a positive impact! Thank you for having your student present with us on these important testing days.
Finally, thank you to all of our families, who walked or braved the crowded parking to come out to our Open House on Thursday evening. We had an incredible turn-out of current families and future River Hawks and as I mentioned, we appreciate the value you place on education in your home. Thank you to our ASB for guiding parents and manning stations and a special shout out to our Band and Choir for their wonderful performances!

FINAL DAY Monday - CAASPP (State) Testing
Thursday students walked onto campus and saw a beautiful wall display for 7th and 8th grade (pics below) to Spring Into Testing. This amazing display was created by our ASB who wrote EVERY student's name on a flower for them or their friend to grab or leave displayed. It was fun seeing all the students looking to find their name before we launched our first tests that morning. THANK YOU ASB!!!
Our final state testing day is Monday, April 22nd. Please remember Monday is a minimum day with dismissal at 12:05 p.m. We know the testing is long and some students finish before others, but we appreciate the cooperation of all our students following the very strict rules of what our state allows when they are done with testing. Monday is that final day to finish that last group of tests. Teachers and counselors will work with students who need more time post-Monday throughout the rest of the week.
Remember, schools are now penalized if students do not complete state testing, which impacts our data and scores. We are a community that values education and we want our scores to continue to show the importance our parents and staff place on education! We appreciate your help!
All District Junior High Basketball Tournament
Saturday, April 13th, Rio Norte had both a Boys and Girls Basketball Team compete in this former annual tradition that was finally brought back to our district this year. Our Boys team had three really tough games playing La Mesa, Arroyo Seco, and beating Sierra Vista for 5th place overall. While tough losses, our boys worked hard out there and we were grateful to get to see them play!
Our girls team won three straight games against Rancho Pico, Arroyo Seco, and Sierra Vista, advancing to the Championship game against La Mesa. These girls fought so hard against a team that was destroying everyone by 20-30 points each prior game, and I am so proud of their heart, sportsmanship, and teamwork! Despite the final loss, it was such a fun afternoon to watch what had to just be exhausting, 4 games in one day, for these spirited basketball warriors!
Thank you to our PE Coach Stroh and Valencia Coach Honig, for working with our River Hawks. Win or lose, we got to cheer them on and they participated in a fun district event that is sure to be a great tradition again!
CLUE: On Stage, comes to Rio!
Rio Norte Junior High Drama Hawks proudly presents CLUE: On Stage.
Based on the iconic 1985 Paramount movie which was inspired by the classic Hasbro board game, Clue is a hilarious farce-meets-murder mystery. The tale begins at a remote mansion, where six mysterious guests assemble for an unusual dinner party where murder and blackmail are on the menu. When their host turns up dead, they all become suspects. Led by Wadsworth – the butler, Miss Scarlet, Professor Plum, Mrs. White, Mr. Green, Mrs. Peacock and Colonel Mustard race to find the killer as the body count stacks up. Clue is the comedy whodunit that will leave both cult-fans and newcomers in stitches as they try to figure out…WHO did it, WHERE, and with WHAT!
CLUE: On Stage will run Thursday May 9th and Friday May 10th at 7pm. Rio Norte is located at 2771 Rio Norte Drive, Santa Clarita, CA. 91354
Tickets can be purchased at https://our.show/rioclue

2024-25 Hart District Calendar: Attendance Matters
The Hart District has the preliminary calendar out for the 2024-25 school year, which shows all holidays and breaks (those won't change). Additionally, it shows the Back to School Night dates for all Junior Highs and High Schools. Check back frequently as this calendar will be continually updated throughout the spring semester as more dates (such as Open House) are added. Click this link for the LIVE 24-25 district calendar or you can go to our website and click on the 24-25 Calendar quick link.
Attendance is so important because California schools are funded through student attendance. As of 1998, school districts no longer receive funding from the State of California for pupils who are absent from school. This includes ALL absences, even those relating to illness, such as medical or doctors’ appointments. That's right an excused absence doesn't make a difference. If the child is not present for at least some part of the day, we do not get the daily allotment for that child. We ask that you use the calendar above to plan appointments and vacations as much as possible around our holidays, pupil free days, and breaks. We understand that some things are out of your control, but anything you can do to minimize absences is appreciated. Of course, if your student is too sick (running a fever, vomiting, etc.) that they are contagious to others, they should remain at home. Studies continue to show a direct correlation between good school attendance and student achievement; we need your help to reinforce the importance of school attendance and to make every effort to send your child to school on a regular basis. We appreciate your support in maximizing our student attendance rate!
