Week Three - Community
8/25/2024

Oiler Families,
Week 3 is here, and it’s packed with excitement! We’re thrilled to see the return of some of our favorite traditions and opportunities—Football is back at The Rig, Oiler Time is kicking off, and we’re back to our regular bell schedule. It’s going to be an incredible week!
I want to take a moment to discuss an important concept you may have heard about recently: College, Career, and Military Readiness (CCMR). Although it’s a relatively new term, CCMR is becoming an essential part of a high quality high school education, shaping how we prepare our students for the challenges and opportunities they will face after graduation. Whether your child’s path leads to college, a career, or military service, CCMR ensures they are equipped with the skills, knowledge, and experiences necessary to succeed in whichever direction they choose.
What is CCMR?
CCMR in Texas helps students prepare for their future by offering various programs and opportunities. Meeting CCMR indicators benefits students by:
- Enhancing readiness for college, the workforce, or the military.
- Providing career exploration through internships and programs of study.
- Preparing for military service with fitness training and leadership development.
- Earning college credit or industry certifications while still in high school.
- Meeting college-ready criteria on the SAT, ACT, or TSIA.
- Building essential skills like communication, problem-solving, and adaptability.
- Making informed decisions about future career and education paths.
At Pearland High School, our goal is for each graduate to meet at least one CCMR indicator, aligned with their postsecondary plans. School counselors are key resources in helping students select courses that prepare them for graduation and beyond.
One of the many way we’re helping your student prepare for life after high school is through our upcoming PSAT Day (October 23rd). This is a valuable opportunity for students to gauge their college readiness and take steps toward meeting CCMR indicators.

Weekly Schedule
Oiler Time Returns
We’re thrilled to announce the return of Oiler Time, a dedicated period during the school day designed to provide students with the academic support they need. This year, Oiler Time will look a bit different to ensure that every student has the opportunity to receive personalized help.
What’s New?
In the past, students remained in their 3rd-period class during Oiler Time, whether they needed assistance or not. This sometimes led to situations where classes were filled with students working independently, while others who needed help couldn’t access the necessary support due to space constraints.
To address this, we’ve implemented a new system where each student will choose a specific teacher’s class to attend during Oiler Time. This change was made after receiving valuable feedback from both staff and students who wanted a more effective way to ensure everyone gets the support they need.
How It Works:
- This Week: Students have the freedom to choose which class they’d like to attend during Oiler Time.
- In Future Weeks: Each department will have a designated priority day where teachers can schedule students who may have been absent, need extra help, or need to catch up on assignments. After these students are scheduled, any remaining spots will be open for other students to self-select.
Why This Matters:
This new approach allows students to receive over two hours of targeted support each week during the school day. For students with busy after-school schedules—whether due to sports, fine arts, work, family obligations, or transportation challenges—this provides a critical opportunity to access the help they need to succeed.
Students will sign up for their Oiler Time sessions using RTI Scheduler, available in their Clever Dashboard. We’re confident that these changes will make Oiler Time more effective and beneficial for all our students.

Joining the PTA is an excellent way for parents to actively participate in their child's education and school community. By being involved in the PTA, parents can stay informed about school events, advocate for important issues, and collaborate with teachers and staff to enhance the educational experience for all students. The PTA provides a platform for parents to contribute to positive changes, and help create a supportive environment that fosters student growth and success. Important Updates on AP Exam Registration and Fees
The College Board has found that students who commit early to taking their AP exams are more likely to score a 3 or higher. In response, the College Board has implemented earlier deadlines for ordering AP exams. Consequently, we have updated our campus timelines for AP exam orders.
Taking the AP exam offers students a valuable opportunity to challenge themselves academically and gain a deeper understanding of the subjects they are passionate about. Successfully scoring a 3 or higher on an AP exam not only demonstrates mastery of college-level material but can also earn students college credit, saving both time and money in their higher education journey. Additionally, the experience of preparing for and taking the AP exam helps students develop critical thinking skills, time management, and the ability to tackle rigorous coursework—skills that are essential for success in college and beyond. Participating in the AP program signals to colleges and universities that a student is ready for the demands of higher education, making them more competitive in the admissions process.
AP Exam Fees:
- The cost for each AP exam this school year is $99.
- PISD will provide a $20 subsidy per exam for students enrolled in the corresponding AP course, reducing the cost to $79 per exam.
- Students who qualify for free or reduced lunch should speak with the campus AP Coordinator, Mr. Hines, regarding the reduced exam fee.
Refund Policy:
Please note that refunds will not be issued if a student does not show up for their AP exam or decides to drop the course after the drop deadline.
Course Drop Deadlines:
- Fall drop deadline (full-year and fall semester courses): September 25, 2024
- Spring drop deadline (second semester courses): Tentatively February 14, 2025

- The fee for the AP Capstone Seminar and Research exams is $147, which will be paid by the district.
- If a student fails to complete any section of the AP Capstone Seminar or Research exam tasks, they will be charged the exam fee of $147.
College Board Account Assistance:

Dress Code Reminders
At Pearland High School, we believe in dressing for success and want our students to present themselves in a way that reflects the great individuals they are on the inside. Here are a few key reminders for this year’s dress code:
Student IDs:
- IDs will be distributed at no charge on the first day of school.
- Students are required to wear their IDs every day. This is a critical safety measure, allowing staff to identify who belongs in the building and prevent unauthorized access.
Head Coverings:
- Hoodies and hats: While we understand that students love to wear hoodies for warmth, they must be worn appropriately. Students will be asked to remove any head coverings, including hats, while inside the building.
Shorts and Skirts:
- Must be worn no shorter than mid-thigh to maintain a respectful and appropriate learning environment.
Leggings (New This Year):
- Stretch slacks and leggings are now allowed.
- They must be appropriately sized meaning they should not be see-through or expose any skin.
We appreciate your support in helping our students dress for success.
