Board Meeting Highlights - 5/1/2023
The Flemington-Raritan Regional Board of Education held a regular meeting on May 1, 2023. Below is a recap of the meeting:
- Personnel item 7.4 was amended to read that the salaries will be determined. Personnel items 9.1 and 9.3 were tabled. All other agenda motions were approved. Agenda, Addendum, Appendices.

NJ STEM Innovation Award & Anton Banko Award
William Cahill, Matthew Kosensky, and Ann Ruppel (not pictured), J.P. Case teachers, received the NJ STEM Innovation Fellowship. Kathleen Mikalsen, Barley Sheaf teacher, received the Anton Banko Award for inspiring the next generation of innovators, scientists, & engineers.
Agriculture in the Classroom Award
Coleen Ewing, Robert Hunter teacher, received the Agriculture in the Classroom Award from the New Jersey Farm Bureau Women’s Leadership Committee.
Hunterdon County Enthusiastic Reader
Charlotte Persche, J.P. Case 7th-grader, was recognized by the Hunterdon County Librarians Association as a recipient of the Hunterdon County Enthusiastic Reader Award.
CJMEA Intermediate Region Band
Sam Levins, Reading-Fleming 6th-grader, was accepted and participated in the CJMEA Intermediate Region Band playing the trumpet.
NJ State Elementary Honor Choir
Reading-Fleming students Sophie Cain, Melody DeLeo, Avni Kakkar, Alanna Leung, Sam Levins, Kensi Martin, Jaxon McCann, Julia Muccilli, Elena Samarasinghe, & Charlotte Whitley were all selected to participate.
New Jersey Math League Top Scorers
Reading-Fleming 6th-grade pre-algebra students scored 14th out of 90 schools in the State of New Jersey. Anya Patel, Alex Voigt, Sajin Abeysinghe, Leo Han, Hannah Khaleel, and Arth Chopra received top scores.
Student Artwork for Staff Appreciation
The artwork of Sophia Parillo, a Barley Sheaf 4th-grader, was selected as the cover of this year’s Staff Appreciation postcard. Her artwork, “Toucan,” was shared with every employee at FRSD.
Student Callers
Barley Sheaf students Jon Budd and John Ruiz Martinez partnered with the Superintendent to record the emergency weather announcement phone messages for the district for the 2022-2023 school year.
RFIS' Schoolyard Habitat
The National Wildlife Federation recognized Reading-Fleming for creating a Certified Schoolyard Habitat® through its Garden for Wildlife program. Teacher Lisa Coster was instrumental in the work. She was joined by Brie Goodwin, who is just one of many students who worked hard on the habitat.
J.P. Case Boys Basketball
The J.P. Case Boys Varsity Basketball team were Division Champions, defeating Bridgewater. Team members are: Gavin Baden, Grant Frey, Finian Glennon, Brian Grubb, Justin Hayes, Jaxson Hunt, Peter Labbate, Owen Landi, Jesse Lawson, Lochlyn Marsh, Jayden Moton, Jordan Moton, Hunter Perdue, Robbie Leubener, & Coaches Brian Glennon and Marty Dowling.
J.P. Case Girls Basketball
The J.P. Case Varsity Girls Basketball team won the semi-finals against Hillsborough. Team members are: Lily Bruno, Cosette Capotosto-Baio, Rylie Cooke, Nicole Covucci, Olivia Duran, Madison Fecho, Sadie Finn, Katie Gabriel, Alexandra Kraatz, Katie Schwartz, Brooke Shaw, Rosalynn Swinson, Cambria Tucker, Abril Valverde, Cheyenne Williams, Emily Law, & Coach Carly Bobrin.
Honored/Not Pictured
- Hazel Sanchez, J.P. Case 8th-grader, received an Unsung Hero Award.
- Ralph Losanno, Technology Supervisor and HSMC Ecosystem Lead, is an “I Can STEM” NJ Inductee.
- Individual schools were recognized for other exemplary efforts.
***A cupcake reception was held for all honorees and their families.
