CPEC Weekly Update 05/06--05/10
Excellence Without Exception for Every Student!!
Principal Turner's Corner
I would like to thank our parents that joined us this past Friday for our Principal's Coffee. The event provided an excellent opportunity to fellowship with our families as we reflected on the pluses and deltas of this school year and highlighted opportunities for improvement as we prepare for the 2024-2025 school year. I truly appreciated the thoughtful and solutions-oriented feedback that was offered from our families. We are very proud of the accomplishments that we have earned this year, however we know that there is still a significant amount of work ahead of us as we seek to ensure academic excellence and career readiness for 100% of our CPEC students.
I'm excited to pause form the work this week to celebrate our students and their growth during the course of the school year. Thursday's award ceremony will not be an honor roll or attendance celebration like we've conducted previously. Instead, it will be an opportunity for teachers and students to celebrate and recognize each other and the impact that being at CPEC this year has had on both the educator and the student. This will be the only year that CPEC doesn't have an end of year graduation, so it's important that we honor the growth and accomplishments of our students as well as their progress towards becoming highly educated and skilled young men and women of integrity and character. We hope that you have margin in your week to join us on Thursday for the ceremony.
Together in service,
Principal Turner

Counselor's Corner With Ms. DeAntonio
Summer fees: Any student taking a summer class needs to make sure their required fees are paid for by May 13, or risk being dropped from the class.
Grade suppression: If any student re-took a class this semester with the intention to suppress a previously failing grade, please email me (kellym.deantonio@cms.k12.nc.us) with the name of the class so that I can ensure it is suppressed before grades are finalized.
CDM: Credit by Demonstrated Mastery (CDM) is a process by which a student may earn credit for a high school course by demonstrating a deep understanding of the content without course enrollment or seat time. CDM is intended for students who have such mastery of a content that they could demonstrate it at any time, without preparation or studying. There are three application windows each school year for CDM: fall, spring, and summer. The window for Summer 2024 is May 1st-31st. Interested students can access the application and more information here: https://www.cmsk12.org/Page/786. Once the application window closes, the summer CDM team will work to develop a testing plan. Information will be emailed by the end of June to let you know the specific testing dates. You must be present on the testing days. This is a district process and school personnel are not a part of the summer process. Given the short window to complete the summer CDM process and ensure time to adjust schedules for SY 24-25, there will not be any adjustments to the testing schedule to accommodate other commitments.

UPDATED Attendance Policy Regarding Final Exams
Criteria for a student to qualify for an exemption from participating in final exam in a course that is a non-EOC/state required assessment:
Students with a grade of an ‘A’ (90%) or above and no more than 3 absences.
Students with a grade of a ‘B’ (80%) or above with no more than 1 absence. Students would have the option to take the final exam to improve their grade rather than the exemption. If a student chooses to take the exam, CMS grading practices are followed, and the exam counts for 20% of the student’s final grade.
For students who have an undue hardship with attendance due to a medical condition, the principal may exempt the student from participating in a non-EOC/state required final exam pending the review of medical documentation through a Medical Hardship and if the student has met the academic criteria
Students who participate and complete Advanced Placement exams may choose to take the teacher-made final to include in their final grade for the class.
Ms. Barrow will notify students who are eligible and send message to parents of eligible students through Parent Square regarding eligibility for final exam exemption by end of day May 3rd. If parent wants student to participate, the message contains directions for the parent to follow and implications.
