Hill students portray historical figures in Living Wax Museum
What do Amelia Earhart, Betty White, Bob Ross and George Washington all have in common? All of these historical figures were represented at the Fourth Grade Living Wax Museum held on Friday, May 31. Check out our fourth graders in action in the video below.
AP history students embark on Battle of the Presidents
According to teacher Ms. Raina Palso, the competition lasts for several weeks.
"Each student nominates a president who they believe left the greatest overall presidential legacy and they do a formal presentation of their nomination to the class," Ms. Palso said. "The class then votes for eight students to compete in the competition, and competitors face challenges about their presidents from fellow competitors and student judges."
Students then vote to move four students to the semi-finals, and then eventually the final two (voted again by students) have to field challenges from Ms. Palso. The winner and the runner-up in each class get a laminated certificate with their name and their president's picture and name presented by Principal Jerry Piger.
"My AP students tend to be very competitive, so these certificates mean a lot," Ms. Palso said. "I often hear from other teachers that students are still debating presidential legacies a year or two after they leave my 10th grade AP class."
In fact, Battle of the Presidents has become famous at DHS. Students often go to staff members to get quotes and recommendations about the president they are representing, and students throughout the building are well-acquainted with the project and often ask to come and observe the competition.
"As a teacher, it is wonderful to see my students engage in such informed debates and discussions of presidential legacies," Ms. Palso said. "They are the most enthusiastic learners - even in June! It is a wonderful and meaningful way to continue the rigor of an AP class after the National exam is over, and I look forward to it every year."
Pictured above, Ms. Palso said each year there are students who start to take on the physical appearance of their president. This is sophomore Aiden Bean, who is championing Theodore Roosevelt in the competition.
Siple, Hill students learn value of a dollar at Economics Fairs
Students from Hill and Siple elementary buildings certainly learned just how far a (Cardinal) buck will go these days.
Third graders from each school building worked hard to participate in Economics Fairs last week. Young entrepreneurs sold personally made art work and jewelry, ice cream sundaes, slushies, popcorn and even pickles! Others offered games you could play for a prize.
Students were able to shop during the fair with their hard-earned Cardinal cash.
Check out the video below that we put together featuring students from both Hill and Siple.

DHS/DAE announces June Students of the Month
Congratulations to the following Davison High School and Davison Alternative Education students on their selection of June Students of the Month.
9th Grade - Bryce Hoggard
Nominated by: Mr. James Wilcox
Bryce is a true "Diamond in the Rough" so to speak. He does not get involved with any other hoopla in the classroom, and takes care of his own business. He has an A in every one of his four core classes, and works very hard. He is mindful of his own responsibilities, and gets help, makes up work when absent, and challenges himself to be better and smarter. Worthy of this award.
10th Grade - Emilee Woodfield
Nominated by: Mrs. Erica Niemi
I have known Emilee for two years as a student and also a member of the DHS Musical. Emilee is a great student in the classroom, willing to help others and participates in class discussions. As a member of the DHS Musical, Emilee is always quick to volunteer, whether it is to help with props or to participate in various ensemble parts on stage. Her positive attitude, work ethic and willingness to review parts with others is a tremendous asset. Emilee is dependable and reliable and I appreciate being able to count on her as one of my go to people.
11th Grade - Sophia Mauro
Nominated by: Mrs. Karlee Pins
Sophia Mauro is an outstanding student. I have had the privilege of having her two years in my classroom. She is a smart girl that exceeds expectations in my classroom. She always has her work done, ready to go daily. She is also always willing to help other students, and lend a helping hand. She is always smiling, funny and outgoing. She also gets great grades, and keeps up on school work while having a job outside of school. There is no better student for student of the month than Sophia Mauro.
12th Grade - Lydia Minto
Nominated by: Ms. Turina Zimmer
Lydia Minto has consistently gone above and beyond in Yearbook class! She has been in the class for three years, one year as a volunteer since the class couldn't fit into her schedule. When I became the advisor, I didn't know how to work the company's platform, so Lydia patiently showed/taught me how to use it. She is an editor this year with a lot of extra duties, but she still takes the initiative to do even more to make the class successful. She's extremely organized and has taken on the task of managing a very full calendar, implementing a new marketing idea, class celebration ideas, and organizing the senior photos for me...all on her own without being asked. Finally, Lydia has done all these things with a positive attitude, always kind and courteous in her interactions.
DAE - Grace Rodman
Nominated by: Ms. Raven Springsteen
Grace is new to DAE this year and we love having her! Grace is very bright, engages with her classmates and teachers, and the course content as well (just ask her how she feels about John Proctor in The Crucible....). Grace's essays are informative and highly entertaining, as she has one of the most humorous and unique author voices I've seen in recent years! I can always depend on Grace to pay attention, ask insightful questions, and lend her voice to the discussion. She is a delight to have in class!

DHS freshmen converge on college campuses
Ninth graders from Davison High School recently had the opportunity to visit a college campus. The trips were arranged as part of the Educational Development Plan (EDP).
Students were able to visit one of the three scheduled tours at one of the following colleges: Lawrence Technological University, Oakland University and Northwood University. Students were able to meet professors and were given a tour by student ambassadors at each campus. Ninth graders were given a glimpse at college life, dining halls, dorms, classroom and recreational facilities.

2020 Bond Update
This week's update ...
Here are some of the latest photos taken inside the Performing Arts Center this morning. These pictures are of the auditorium.
Today, work was taking place inside the sound and lighting booth of the auditorium. Testing of the air handling system will also take place next week before the installation of seating begins. This particular system uses air that is supplied from floor diffusers set beneath the auditorium seats. Advantages to this kind of system is improved indoor air quality, better acoustics and less HVAC energy consumption.
