Tiger Families Newsletter : April 2025
My dearest Tiger Families,
We have had an extraordinary month of April and another one fast approaching in May so please make sure you support us in bringing your child every day to school. Every day matters this month because we are getting reading for our yearly round of State Testing starting this week. Testing is our greatest academic measure of how each student is doing so please don’t miss a day.
There are also many things to celebrate at Virgil. First, earlier this semester Virgil was awarded the prestigious the Magnet School of Excellence Award. Two weeks ago we began the process of applying for a Gold Award from the State of California for our discipline plan at Virgil. Finally, please take a look at our pictures below showcasing how involved our students are at Virgil. We are a special school that provides unique opportunities for our students so thank you for your support! Let’s make our end of the year one to remember.
- Summer School At Virgil. Virgil is offering summer school classes from June 17, 2025 - July 25, 2025. If you are interested please see the attached link for more information Summer School 2025.
- MESA Program Regionals at California State, Los Angeles on April 19th. We brought home 13 team awards, winning 7 out of the 9 events. We won 35 individual awards. This is a first in Virgil history! Great job Tigers.
- Aspen institute Visit on April 11th. Virgil was selected as one of 3 schools in LAUSD to be a showcased for our innovation around science related to climate change. Visitors toured our campus and got to speak with our students and learn from them. Our students showcased their art that they made from recycled materials. They also saw our student work from our FUSE lab such as our 3-D printing of reusable kitchen utensils, and other projects with innovation around energy. Ms. Chavez’s class highlighted their amazing work as well with energy and renewable themes. Finally, our Esports team created a virtual world of Virgil in the future and led our group on their server. An executive from Minecraft was part of the group and said, “I was so impressed with the quality of work from your students and presenters.”
- NYC and Washington DC Trip, from April 13th to April 18th. For the second year in a row we were able to take students to New York City and Washington D.C.
- UCLA Brain Awareness Field Trip. Students got a chance to see first-hand what it is like to work with brains. They were able to meet doctors, nurses and all staff from UCLA.
- March Madness. This year’s lunchtime basketball tournament between teams was the most fierce competition that we have had. Every game was super close and fun to watch especially the finale between UCLA and USC. What a game it was. Congratulations to the winners - Team UCLA.
- Custodian’s Day, April 9th. The 6th grade students from Mr. Kim’s class celebrated our custodial staff for keeping our campus clean. This was incredibly thoughtful and greatly appreciated. Many times the work our custodial staff does goes unnoticed but our students gave a huge thank you to our staff. They wrote thoughtful notes, provided lunch and played games with the team.
