Educating Learners Today... Building Global Leaders Tomorrow
Athletes Helping Athletes
Athletes Helping Athletes is a program that was developed by our Central High School to assist our sixth graders with transitioning into middle school years. Former Clear Stream students and athletes from Central High School visited our two sixth grade classrooms to discuss socialization, classes, and fitting in. Our students asked a lot of questions and came away with the feeling of being more confident as they will be transitioning to middle school life in the next 4 months.
Erin’s Law
In August 2019, New York State became the 37th state to sign Erin’s Law into legislation. Erin's Law requires public schools to teach children about the dangers of inappropriate touching, abuse and exploitation. This preventative workshop is taught to all students who are in kindergarten through eighth grade in an age appropriate manner. Erin's Law is named for Erin Merryn, an abuse survivor and activist who has advocated for similar laws nationwide for over a decade. Erin’s Law is intended to help children, teachers, and parents in New York State schools identify abuse, and to provide awareness, assistance, referral, or resource information for children and families who are in need of assistance. Dr. Karen Mackler held several workshops to introduce our students to this legislation which will help to keep them safe.
Field Day
According to the McGraw-Hill Dictionary, to have a “field day” is an idiom that means to experience freedom from one’s usual work schedule; to have a very enjoyable time, as with children who are released from classes to take part in sports and athletic contests. Field Day festivities got off to an amazing start this year and the weather cooperated! The 3rd, 4th, 5th and 6th graders had the honor of kicking off Field Day. Throughout the morning, the students participated in games that required skill, stamina, sportsmanship and athleticism. Students participated in “You Make It, You Take It”, “Volcano” and "Connect Four”, among other games. All of our games required the use of the four C’s - Cooperation, Critical Thinking, Communication and Collaboration. During Play Day, the Kindergarten, 1st, and 2nd grade teams had an equally good time. They especially enjoyed getting wet in the Water Cup Relay and other fun competitions. A special thanks to Mr. Greiss and Mr. Hansen for organizing all of the events. Big shout out to Mrs. Brady, Mr. Clark and Mr. Van Keuren for making sure the day ran smoothly. Finally we can’t forget all of the PTA members, parent volunteers and teachers and staff who worked to make yesterday a success. Thank you!
District Art Show
Each year, the Valley Stream District 30’s Annual Art Show provides an exceptional opportunity for students in all three buildings to have their work on view. This year, the community was invited out to an extraordinary evening gala that showcased the visual arts, technology, and mathematics. All of this was intended to interact with our community and embrace the achievements and intellect of our students in an academic setting.
Ms. Freiberg always creates a WOW factor when planning the Art Show. This year's focal point gallery was dedicated to the history of video games as seen from inside the games themselves. The students helped to create a neon video world that illustrated the sights and sounds of vintage games, such as Pac Man, Donkey Kong and Mario. This collaborative piece represents at least 15 different games that are considered classics. As our community guests snaked through the school's hallways, they viewed student art, holographic representations and self portraits. Clearly each piece highlighted the diversity of the student body and embodied the culmination of months of hard work.
Parents also were invited to play math center games with their children. The students taught their parents how to play many of these games which are designed to build math fluency. All in all it was a magical night. Ms. Freiberg is to be congratulated on a job well done.
Broadway over Clear Stream
This year, Clear Stream’s very first drama club put on a play called Good Night Sleep Tight. The play was a dream sequence that showcased how bears lost their tail, and adventures of the city mouse and country mouse. There was also singing and dancing. Many of the students in our Drama Club acted for the first time and did an outstanding job on the stage. Our students also created artwork and purchased costumes. The play rivaled those on Broadway. Big shout out to Mrs. Neri and Mrs. Clarke for being the advisors of our Drama Club and giving a chance to our students to shine under the bright lights. Video Link of the play is below!
Oh SNAP!
Students in our third grade enjoyed an on-campus field trip, care of Snapology. Snapology provides children’s enrichment at its best with STEAM learning programs that engage children. Snapology is a mobile steam lab that brings steam activities right to our doorstep. The instructor was fun and provided hands-on activities to teach Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics. While children are exploring robotics, coding, and design challenges using LEGO® bricks, K’Nex and technology, they are building skills that will help them throughout school and their careers. Students explored and had fun with these programs designed to stimulate creativity and spark and interest in learning. Students were able to use Lego bricks to build and design pieces using the engineering process. Legos now come equipped with engines that can be coded to create any variety of movements. Next year, 4th grade students will be able to participate in the Drone Club and Lego Robotics. This is a great introduction to these enriching coding activities. Shout out to Mrs. Taliercio for securing this activity.

6th Grade Graduates ONLY
Dear Families:
The school year is rapidly drawing to a conclusion. Our 100th sixth grade moving-up exercises will be held on TUESDAY, JUNE 18th, 2024 AT 5:30 P.M. in the Elinor McAuliffe Auditorium at the SHAW AVENUE SCHOOL. It promises to be a fun and memorable evening. The ceremony is being conducted at the Shaw Avenue School in order to provide a more comfortable environment for our children and us.
Due to limited seating capacity and fire department regulations, the family of each sixth grade student will be allotted four tickets. If you do not need all four tickets, please return any extra to your classroom teacher. Children under the age of 4 will not be admitted. There are no exceptions to this rule.
PTA is providing flower wristlets for the girls and boutonnieres for the boys. We ask your cooperation in not bringing flowers or balloons to the school to be presented to the students, as there is no provision in the program for this kind of presentation. Instead, keep your flowers until after the program and keep any balloons at home or in your car as they can distract from the ceremonies.
I appreciate your understanding and cooperation with these matters. Our goal is to provide the children and parents with a safe and wonderful experience. Thank you very much.
Very truly yours,
John Singleton, Jr.
Principal
