Don't forget, the homecoming dance is on Thursday, October 24th from 7-9. Tickets are $5 if purchased in advance (during lunch at student activities) or $10 at the door.
Grade 11 PSAT
Salem High School is excited to provide an in school opportunity for all 11th grade students to participate in the PSATs OCTOBER 24, 2024.
The PSAT/NMSQT takes 2 hours and 14 minutes and consists of 2 sections: (1) the Reading and Writing Section, and (2) the Math Section. Most of the questions are multiple choice, though some math questions ask you to write in the answer rather than select it.
The following table shows how much time you get for each section and the number of questions for each test:

Support Your PTO: Dinner for Two Anywhere in the World Raffle
For the 14th year, the Salem Education Foundation has launched its Dinner Anywhere in the World Raffle, which includes dinner, hotel, and two roundtrip airplane tickets to anywhere in the world. Tickets are sold through the school PTOs, SEF board members, volunteers, restaurants, parents, and students.
Students have incentives if they sell tickets:
- The student who sells the winning ticket earns $500 cash.
- The school that sells the most tickets will be the first positioned school in the next Haunted Happenings parade.
- PTO’s earn $1 for every ticket they sell after exceeding 100 tickets
An anonymous donor who bought a ticket for each and every school teacher, custodian, and cafeteria worker in SPS will be automatically entered.

Breakfast is served at Salem High School from 7:15 - 7:45 each morning in the 1st Floor Cafeteria.
Salem High School Dinner
Exciting News! Salem High School students now have the opportunity to stay for dinner any day after school! Dinner will be served in the SHS first-floor cafeteria from 3:05 PM - 4:35 PM starting this coming Monday 12/11. These meals are FREE for all students.
It's A Great Time to Be A Witch!
Salem High School offers so many unique opportunities to allow our scholars to explore their passions. This past week Salem High School expanded on these opportunities by opening the only school based Butcher Shop in the Commonwealth.

We are proud to announce to you that the BUTCHER SHOP for the SHS Culinary Arts department has opened. We are implementing the roll-out gradually, our menu selections will change weekly. Our SHS students have been training in fabrication, marinating, brining, and meat cutting.
I'm also pleased to inform you that SHS is the only school in the state that provides these kinds of skills and training. We'll be forging primal cuts, producing our own sausage, and much more in the future.
This past week the Culinary Dept. provided marinated steak and turkey tips.

FAFSA Support
The U.S. Education Department (USED) has announced that the 2025-26 Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) will be launched through a new process. Starting on Tuesday, October 1, USED will release the 2025-26 FAFSA form for testing with a limited set of students and institutions. The department will make the application available to all students on or before Sunday, December 1. This process will allow USED to test and resolve issues before making the form available to all students and contributors.
Massachusetts students can find information about college financial aid on this shared web site and through the Department of Higher Education’s Office of Student Financial Assistance.
Salem High School Counselors will continue to work with our community partners to provide continual support around the financial aid process as the year progresses including workshops, one-on-one support in person and virtually, and student lesson planning.

Respiratory Therapist
Respiratory Therapist Education Required: Associate Degree or Bachelor’s Degree in Respiratory Therapy.
*Certification in the field is also required.
Typical Tasks Associated with This Career:
• Set up and operate devices for patient treatment, such as ventilators, oxygen machines, and aerosol generators
• Perform emergency care, such as artificial respiration
• Follow doctors’ orders and consult with doctors if patients have bad reactions
• Monitor patients’ responses to treatment and assess patients’ condition
• Work with doctors, nurses, and other medical staff to oversee patient progress
• Maintain patients’ charts. Note evaluation and treatment information.
• Teach patients to use ventilators and other life support systems for home care.
• May perform non-traditional tasks, such as drawing blood
• Check lung function and adjust equipment for best results, following doctor’s orders
• Perform chest physiotherapy to remove mucus from lungs. Assist patents in breathing exercises.
• Teach or supervise respiratory care trainees and other staff
• Assist doctors in research and diagnosis
• Make emergency visits to fix equipment
• Run tests such as electrocardiograms or stress tests to assess lung functions
• Use blood gas analyzer to measure blood levels of oxygen and acidity
• Evaluate patients’ lung capacity. Compare oxygen readings to normal standards for age, weight, and other factors.
