Direct Instruction Mathematics
Please join the Allegheny Intermediate Unit's Training & Consultation Team for this In Person Training Series.
This training program helps teachers improve their math teaching skills using Direct Instruction (DI). Participants will learn the key ideas and strategies from the "Direct Instruction Mathematics" book. They will get practical experience and knowledge to effectively use DI in their classrooms. The course covers lesson planning, teaching methods, assessment techniques, and ways to support different student needs.The content in this series can be used for any learner, including those with higher support needs in autistic and life skills support settings to those students learning advanced mathematical concepts.
Participant Information
Target Audience:
General education teachers, special education teachers, interventionists, coaches, curriculum directors, and special education liaisons
Act 48 Hours:
- Participant may earn a minimum of 13 and up to 28 (twenty-eight) Act 48 hours for the training series.
- 5 (five) Act 48 hours will be awarded for each full day session.
- 3 (three) Act 48 hours will be awarded for the half day virtual session.
- Participants must attend the first and last sessions in the series along with at least one of the additional four math topic specific sessions to receive Act 48 hours.
Cost: There is no cost to attend this training series.
Registration Priority: Educators who work for LEAs in the AIU3 region will have priority registration.

Session 1: October 7, 2024 - Learning Hierarchy and Overview of Direct Instruction
This session will provide an in-depth exploration of the Learning Hierarchy and Direct Instruction methodologies, equipping educators with practical strategies to enhance student learning outcomes through structured, evidence-based teaching practices. Participants will gain insights into effectively implementing these approaches to support diverse learners in achieving academic success.
This session delves into teaching basic facts and counting principles using Direct Instruction methodologies, providing educators with structured, evidence-based strategies to enhance students’ foundational math skills. Participants will learn effective techniques to ensure all learners build strong numerical understanding through explicit, systematic instruction.
Session 3: December 4, 2024 - Addition & Subtraction
This professional development training focuses on teaching addition and subtraction using Direct Instruction methodologies, providing educators with structured, evidence-based strategies to enhance students’ arithmetic skills. Participants will acquire effective methods to guarantee that all learners grasp these essential operations through clear and structured teaching.
Session 4: January 7, 2025 - Multiplication & Division
This professional development session on Direct Instruction for multiplication and division equips educators with structured, evidence-based strategies to enhance students’ arithmetic skills. Participants will learn effective methods to ensure all learners master these essential operations through clear and systematic teaching.
Session 5: March 3, 2025 - Fractions & Decimals
This professional development session will explore effective strategies and best practices for implementing Direct Instruction in multiplication and division, emphasizing structured, step-by-step approaches to enhance student learning and mastery of foundational mathematical concepts.
Session 6: April 8, 2025 - Share Out & Networking via Zoom
This networking session will culminate our yearlong series and is designed for participants to synthesize insights and develop actionable plans for enhancing student engagement and learning outcomes through the use of Direct Instruction.
