After breakfast, embark on a powerful tour of Ghana’s Forts, Castles, and Slave Dungeons, where history comes alive. The story of the trans-Atlantic slave trade is told through the Cape Coast Castle, built by the Swedes in 1653 and later taken over by the British. Here, you’ll learn about the tragic relationship between the Western slave traders and African tribes that enabled the trade. Standing in the dark, cramped dungeons will bring you face to face with the unimaginable hardships millions of Africans endured. The castle also houses the West African Historical Museum, providing further context to this painful chapter of history.
After lunch, visit Elmina Castle, also known as St. George’s Castle, built by the Portuguese in 1482. This site offers another powerful glimpse into the inhumanity of the slave trade. Witness the dark, suffocating dungeons where Africans were held before their long, perilous journey across the Atlantic. Experiencing these conditions in person serves as a sobering reminder of the impact of this painful history.
In the afternoon, dive into the vibrant rhythms of Ghanaian culture with a drumming and dancing workshop. Led by local experts, you’ll learn the basics of iconic Ghanaian instruments like the djembe and kpanlogo drums, feeling the energy of the music pulse through you.
