YMCA Before & After School Care
Hello everybody! I wanted to provide some information to our YMCA Before/After School Childcare parents addressing some questions.
First, I would like to inform you of our Homework Procedures:
Each group has 30 minutes per day set aside specifically for homework. The YMCA also participates in SCALED learning, which are lesson plans focused on youth development but not all kids in our care want to participate. This is another 30-minute block of time that they can use for homework if they prefer. One note I would like to make is that we are unable to “force” a child to do anything and require multiple options to be offered. For example, during a SCALED Lesson, if they do not wish to participate, they can read, do homework, color, some form of activity that is not taking away from the main lesson being taught. The same is true with Homework time; if they do not wish to do homework, they can read, draw, or continue their SCALED activity.
Second, we are coming up on our licensing inspection and have finalized how sign in/out will work as of September 16th:
Parents will need to park their cars and come to the white gate, where you will be let into the courtyard by myself or another YMCA Staff member. Once you are in the courtyard, you will physically have to sign your child out and I will call for them once we have your signature. Parents are not allowed to explore the campus and must stay in the courtyard at the sign in/out table until you have your child. My phone number will still be available in the event a situation is being handled and you are waiting to be let in at the gate. This will be the last time the sign in/out process changes and I appreciate you all being patient with us as we get our license finalized. If you are picking up a child from an extracurricular or tutoring, you will remain in your car and call the appropriate teacher.
Finally, I sent out an email to our Before/After care parents regarding Immunizations:
We need to have your child's immunization records BEFORE September 15th, as without them as a licensed program we will be unable to provide childcare. You can either email me your child's immunization records, hand them to me at pick up, drop off, or contact the school nurse to allow the school to share the information with me. Without parent consent, the school cannot provide me with your child's medical information.
If you all have any questions, comments, or concerns do not hesitate in contacting me. My phone number is (623)777-9512 and my email address is dylan.whitt@vosymca.org

Greetings!
Six weeks into the school year (yes, I’m keeping track)! Temps soared to 110 this week, but it looks like we will get some double-digit temperatures beginning next week. We are all ready for it. Despite the heat, Chan’s class and a couple of 8th graders helped disperse the wood chips along the learning area in the garden. They finished nearly half of the work!
We wrapped our verdolagas block. Next week we will begin our watermelon block. The students will enjoy this block. What is not to love about watermelon popsicles? One watermelon yields about 50 popsicles so we will have a surplus. When it cools down, we will host a market stand outside the gate during parent pickup. There will be transplants, flowers, and yes, popsicles. Some items will be free to parents. Stay tuned for that!
SHOUT OUT TO THE SHAW STARS THAT READ THIS NEWSLETTER! One of our 8th graders, Amerie, informed me that she reads our newsletter and I thought that was soooo cool! You are an inspiration, Amerie! Keep reading Shaw Stars!
