MS 50 Updates: Week of September 30, 2024
We have lots of opportunities to get involved in parent leadership here at MS 50! Our PTA is seeking members to join our fundraising and space planning committee. These groups meet online monthly and as needed. Additionally, we are looking for more parents to be members of the School Leadership Team (SLT). The SLT meets monthly online at 4PM on the day of the PTA meeting. Please email Edda Figueroa, our Parent Coordinator, for more information and to sign up for these opportunities.

ELT Courses
Thank you to all of the students who registered for ELT online! We will release your student's classes on Operoo next week Monday and will distribute new program sheets with their assigned ELTs on Wednesday. If you missed the first registration window, information on how to register will be available next week.
Middle and High School Applications
School application season is here! 8th graders are taking time during advisory each week to research what school options will be right for them next year with guided lessons on how to navigate the website and prepare their applications. 8th grade families should have received a letter with their MySchools account creation code last week. If you have not received it yet, please contact Ms. Sostre.
Do you know any 5th grade families looking for a middle school next year? Our school tour dates and registration information can be found at ms50.org/admissions.
Classroom Spotlight: Science
6th Grade- Ecosystems and the Diversity of Life
In this unit students explore Earth’s ecosystems. Students begin by analyzing and interpreting data in order to understand the relationships among organisms, populations, and their resources. Students narrow their focus even more to construct explanations about specific organism interactions. Students develop models to represent the flow of energy and cycling of matter within ecosystems. Students should be able to develop arguments about how changes in the ecosystem affect the populations in these ecosystems, understanding that some communities need more energy than others to maintain stability. This unit also presents multiple opportunities for students to understand these concepts through a mathematical lens by analyzing data and creating graphs and mathematical models to represent these ecosystem interactions. The learning opportunities in this unit add a layer of understanding about predicting changes in our world.
7th Grade-Density and Measurement
The exploration of structure and properties of matter is a launch for understanding structure and function of matter at different scales. Students look for patterns in order to predict particle behavior as they continue to hone their modeling skills. Lastly, students will use evidence to construct an argument about density as an identifiable property of matter. There are many opportunities within this unit for students to strategically use scientific tools for measuring properties of matter.
8th Grade-Characteristics of Life and Living Things
All living things share a set of unique characteristics and processes that define life. While reviewing basic laboratory and microscopy techniques, students will explore the similarity and differences between cell types. Deeply investigating different domains and kingdoms of life allows for an introduction to the history of life on Earth, common ancestry, and evolution, which are key concepts spiraled throughout the remainder of the course.
Tryout and Audition Schedule
