SHS Principal's Newsletter

October 2023
From the Principal
Unbelievably, we already have passed the first six-week grading checkpoint of first semester. Schaumburg High School utilizes a grading system that is like the typical collegiate grading system. The semester grading system allows students 18 weeks to demonstrate understanding and growth in their courses. In-progress grades and teacher comments are provided at both the 6-week and 12-week checkpoints, prior to the final semester grade being issued after 18 weeks at the conclusion of the semester. Most classes at Schaumburg High School also issue final exams. The final semester grade is weighted at 80% for student work during the semester and 20% for the final exam. The final semester grades are the only grades that are listed on the student’s high school transcript.
Staying engaged and keeping up with academic work during the middle 6 weeks of the semester can set students up for success at the end of the semester and for final exams. If at any time during the semester you feel your child needs additional academic support, please do not hesitate to reach out to their teachers or counselor. Included in this newsletter is information about where students can access tutoring both during the school day and after school. In addition to this support, we also have a test makeup room where students can go makeup assessments from when they are absent from school. As a reminder, parents can access course information through Schoology. If for any reason you are having trouble accessing Schoology for a specific course, please reach out to the individual teacher for that course so that they can assist in providing you access. Regularly checking grades in Infinite Campus is a great way to keep up to date on how your student is performing. If you have trouble accessing grade and attendance information through Infinite Campus for your child, please contact student services at 847-755-4630.
Sincerely,
Brian Harlan
Principal

Plagiarism
Plagiarism, especially internet plagiarism, has become a growing problem nationwide. Today’s students have grown up using computers, but many are not aware of the ethics of how to use downloaded material and give proper credit for their sources. According to district policy, plagiarism can include “representing the work of others as one’s own through verbal, written, graphic, electronic, or other means.” Students are taught throughout their high school careers to properly credit researched material, including all internet sources.
Students who are under the impression that anything found on the internet can be freely used are mistaken. As the consequences for plagiarism can significantly impact a student’s grade, they need to clearly understand that copying/downloading any material without crediting the source is unacceptable.
Student Off-Campus Lunch Reminder
Schaumburg High School operates as a closed campus during the school day. The only exception to this policy applies to students who have off-campus lunch privileges. Junior and senior students whose parents have signed off-campus permission forms may leave the school campus only during their scheduled lunch period. Students who have this privilege must exit the building through Entrance 2 return through Entrance 1 during their lunch. While doing so, they must scan their ID card every time they exit and reenter the building. If you are interested in off campus for your junior or senior student, please have them pick up an off-campus lunch permission form in the attendance office.
iPad Protection Plan Reminder
As a friendly reminder, Township High School District 211 offers student iPad protection through the District 211 iPad Protection plan.
