Godwin At A Glance - Summer 2024 Edition
A Message from Superintendent Fetterhoff
Dear Godwin Heights Public Schools Families:
On behalf of the Godwin Heights Board of Education and all of us who work with and support your children, I want to thank you for another exciting school year!
Our educators are the very best. They will be engaged in learning on their own all summer, attending training, reviewing student growth and achievement data, and making plans to engage your students like never before in the classroom. Our Board of Education continues to guide our collective focus in ways that provide your children with the very best we have to offer.
It is an exciting time to be in Godwin Heights, and it is my great honor to serve as your superintendent. Godwin is family; there is no better place in which to learn and work.
Thank you for your continued support as we strive to do our very best for our community’s children. They deserve it, and we simply cannot do this important work without you. We are all in this together, one Godwin Family!
Have a great summer and we look forward to seeing you and your children soon.

Feeding America Food Truck
Godwin Heights Public Schools has a proud partnership with Feeding America West Michigan. They provide mobile food truck pantries to our school district once a month.
One in every 9 people. At least 261,000 people in West Michigan and the Upper Peninsula are food insecure—meaning they don't have consistent access to enough food for an active, healthy life. Food insecurity exists for a variety of reasons, and anyone can experience a bout of it. Feeding America West Michigan, believes hunger is unacceptable and that their community has the power to change lives—one meal at a time. That’s why they've assembled a network of partners that they work alongside on their mission to relieve hunger and increase food security in West Michigan and the Upper Peninsula.
Our Feeding America truck distributions will now be every month on WEDNESDAYS!

Class of 2024 Valedictorian - Aaron Montoya
We are thrilled to spotlight Aaron Montoya, a standout student with an impressive 4.1 GPA who plans to attend the University of Michigan - Ann Arbor. Aaron's diverse interests include weightlifting, skiing, and running, complemented by his involvement in KCTC, coding, an I.T. help desk job, and active participation in church activities. Starting his journey at Godwin Heights in kindergarten, Aaron treasures the tight-knit community and lasting connections with classmates and teachers. His favorite memories include the COVID-19 era and his freshman and sophomore years of soccer. However, his senior year posed significant challenges as he balanced two part-time jobs with a demanding schedule of college and AP courses, impacting his mental health. Despite these hurdles, Aaron's resilience shines through. Looking ahead, he plans to earn a degree in Computer Engineering, pursue internships, take on leadership roles, and embark on projects that benefit online users. We congratulate Aaron and look forward to his future successes. Joining us to celebrate Aaron's achievements are his proud parents, Adrian and Norma Montoya.
Class of 2024 Salutatorian - Jusmila Mazariegos Gonzalez
We are excited to feature Jusmila Mazariegos Gonzalez, a dedicated student with a 4.0 GPA who plans to attend GRCC. Jusmila's passions include drawing, painting, watching MCU movies, and baking. She has been actively involved in Student Council, G Club, and as a Wrestling Manager, all while working after school. Joining the Godwin Heights community in 9th grade, Jusmila cherishes spirit weeks, assemblies, and college trips. One of her toughest challenges was meeting new people, but she values the welcoming staff and the opportunity to take dual enrollment classes. Looking ahead, Jusmila plans to attend GRCC to explore her major, transfer to a four-year university, travel, and work. We congratulate Jusmila on her achievements and look forward to her future successes.

2024 Kent County Prevention Coalition Youth Summit
Our middle school students had at the recent Kent Count Prevention Coalition's "Youth Summit." This year marked the fourth consecutive year of our middle school participation in the event as a whole school, with this being our second year attending in person.
Our collaboration with the Kent County Prevention Coalition has been instrumental in providing valuable support to our students. Through their participation in the summit, our students were encouraged to resist peer pressure, make informed decisions regarding drugs and alcohol, and discover and nurture the leadership qualities within themselves.

North Godwin Elementary
North Godwin 5th Graders Enjoy a Day Outdoors at Camp Tuhsmeheta
In May, our North Godwn Elementary 5th graders enjoyed a first time field trip to Camp Tuhsmeheta (Camp T) in Greenville, Michigan. Camp T is dedicated to providing a fun, active, and safe learning environment for school-age children in Michigan. It is located on Flannigan Lake at the western edge of the Morgan Mills chain of lakes. It boasts 301 pristine acres of pine and oak forests. This is an amazing experience for our students and we are incredibly grateful to our gracious donors who helped to make this trip possible.
Adis Gazic, owner of Gazic Trucking, right here in the Godwin community, donated $1,200.00 for this trip because he said "my kids always loved camp" and he wanted our students to be able to enjoy the same experience. Godwin Plumbing and Hardware, a staple in our area since 1955, donated $600.00 to our Camp T outdoor adventure because they believe in supporting local, neighborhood students. Our friends at Cabela's Outdoor Fund awarded North Godwin a grant in the amount of $450.00 for the Camp T outing because our grant request perfectly fit one of their core support values -- connecting new audiences to the outdoors. Our Principal, Mr. Steve Minard, proudly accepted the grant check in the amount of $450.00 in person at Cabela's in May. A heartfelt thank you to all of our donors. Our 5th grade students loved this incredible opportunity to get out in the wilderness. They learned, challenged themselves, and they grew through this experience!
West Godwin Elementary
The last days of school at West Godwin Elementary school were a delightful celebration filled with joy, laughter, and a sense of community. We wrapped up the school year with a family picnic and followed that with a fun day packed with games and activities, creating lasting memories for our students and their families. We had over 350 family members join us on Thursday, May 30th for our family picnic. Families enjoyed a grilled hot dog lunch complete with delicious snow cones for dessert and were able to take pictures in front of a great balloon display donated by Luxury Events! We ended the day with our 2nd graders parading through the halls, led by our two retirees, Mrs. Maleport and Ms. Schneider, all celebrating their last day at West Godwin. The last half day of school, students participated in a variety of fun games and activities designed to further celebrate the end of a fantastic year together. It's safe to say a great time was had by all!
Having so much fun!
