School Meals Are Now FREE for All BCS Students!
Dear BCS Community:
Following the recent announcement all Berkeley County Schools students will receive free breakfast and lunch through the expanded Community Eligibility Provision (CEP) program, here are answers to some frequently asked questions.
- Will students enrolled in virtual school receive delivery of free meals? Virtual students are welcome to come to the home school where they are assigned to consume a meal onsite for breakfast and lunch at no cost to the student. Unfortunately, we are unable to provide to-go meals due to federal regulations and home delivery is not an option at this time.
- Can staff or parents/guardians receive free meals? CEP only offers free breakfast and lunch to students. Adults may purchase meals at the cost of $3.00 for breakfast and $4.00 for lunch.
- Will I receive a bill for November, before the start of this program? Yes, Child Nutrition mailed the final bills on November 7, 2024.
- What if I have an outstanding meal balance? Any balance owed before November 1, 2024, will be the responsibility of the parent/guardian. Payments can be made in one of three ways.
- Open a schoolcafe.com account and pay online; minimum payment is $20.00
- Pay at your student's school with cash or check. Make checks payable to Berkeley County Schools.
- Contact the Child Nutrition Office at 304-267-3510 ext. 76004 to make a debit/credit card payment over the phone. Payments are accepted in any amount.
- Will I receive a refund on prepayments? There are three options for families who have made prepayments to their SchoolCafé account.
- Maintain a positive balance to cover any additional meals or milk your student wishes to purchase.
- Select refund on your SchoolCafé account or call the Child Nutrition Office at 304-267-3510 ext. 76004 to request a refund.
- Donate your balance to our Angel Fund, which helps alleviate some of our families' financial burdens. This option is located under donate on your SchoolCafé account.
- Is my student able to receive additional meals or milk? The CEP covers one breakfast and lunch meal per student per day. Additional meals or milk may be purchased using cash or prepayment on the student's meal account. Milk or additional meals cannot be charged to the student's account.
- Additional meals may be purchased at the cost of $3.00 for breakfast and $4.00 for lunch.
- Additional milk may be purchased for $0.25.
- If my student packs, can they receive milk? Milk is only free with a school breakfast or lunch per federal regulations.
- A single milk without a school meal can be purchased for $0.25 using cash or prepayment on the student's meal account.
- Where is the money coming from to pay for the free school meals? Berkeley County Schools receives federal funding for the CEP program. Any additional costs incurred with running the program are subsidized by a transfer from the district's general funds.
