This Week In Redhawks Athletics
October 24th
What is the Redhawk Rundown?
This is a Newsletter that both the Athletic Director, Henry Stevens, and Dean Cordeiro '25 will be sending out periodically. It is where you can get all the information you need on what is going on in the Barnstable High School Athletic Program. If you have any ideas about what we can add to this newsletter, then please do not hesitate to reach out to either of us.
5 Good Things
- As the fall season comes to a close, I wanted to take a minute to thank all of our senior athletes for the commitment to the programs throughout the years. The athletic department, your coaches, teammates and the Barnstable community appreciates everything that you have done. We still have some time left in the fall season and many of you play winter/spring sports, but for those that do not, thank you.
- Dean and I are working on a video for the athletic department for guidelines for the student section at home games. I have always said "Be Loud. Be Disruptive but do not be Disrespectful" If you are interested in helping us out with this, then please reach out to either myself or Dean.
- Thursday and Friday the CGJROTC Color Guard will be conducting colors prior to the Volleyball and Football games. Thank you to Captain Schulz and his Junior Officers for doing this. Just another example of ways that our BHS students can participate in athletics, even if they are not involved in the sport itself.
- Unified Basketball has their Senior Night on Monday 10/28 against Falmouth. The game will start at 3:30 in the main gymnasium. Please come and support these athletes for their last home Unified Basketball Game.
- Last week, the Girls Varsity soccer team lost to Nauset 0-1. This is significant because, historically, Nauset has been one of the toughest matchups for the team in league play. After the game, I received calls and emails about how hard our team played and how great of a game it was. This is just another example of how a season is not defined by wins and losses but by the growth of the athletes from the start of the season to the end. Head Coach Katie Smith and Assistant Coach Carley Stauffer have done a great job in their first season building a strong foundation that will help this program continue to grow and flourish in the future.
Next Few Weeks in Redhawk Athletics

MIAA State Tournament
The fall season ends next week for most sports with the tournament starting at the end of next week. Currently, we have a number of teams that have qualified for the tournament or are close to qualifying.
Girls Volleyball is currently seeded 7th in Division 1, with games against Franklin and North Quincy left. Tonight the girls host Franklin for senior night. Last week, the team beat Needham (#5), 3-1. If the team finishes the season strong, then they could be headed for another top 5 seed in the tournament.
Field Hockey beat Dartmouth (#18) on Monday to move from 31 to 28 in the power rankings. The team beat Bridgewater-Raynham last night, 2-0, on their senior night. The team finishes the regular season on Saturday when they host Wachusett at 11:15 am. If they stay at this ranking, then they will travel to Franklin for the first round matchup.
Boys Soccer beast SJPII last night, 5-0, to get to .500. The boys would currently be in a play in game for the tournament with an opponent TBD. The boys have matchups against Plymouth North (Home and Away) and Dover Sherborn (Away), to finish the season.
Football currently sits at number 5 in Division 2. The team hosts La Salle Academy from Rhode Island tomorrow night for Senior Night. A win against La Salle would all but guarantee, at least, a four seed and two home games for the tournament.
What an exciting fall this has been so far, and congratulations to all of our athletes on successful seasons. Make sure to look out for more information about the state tournament coming from the Athletics Office.

Co-ops
This winter, BHS will be the host schools for a few co-ops with other schools on the Cape. A co-op is when a host school (Barnstable) competes as one team with students from another school. The MIAA states that "In an effort to increase participation with interscholastic athletics, various positive factors motivated schools to create ways of saving existing programs and of establishing new ones. The initial purpose of cooperative teams was to combine the participation of multiple schools to build and develop athletic opportunities for students."
The coops that we will be participating in are as follows:
- Girls Ice Hockey will be in a co-op with Upper Cape Tech and Cape Cod Tech. If you have any questions, then please reach out to me.
- Girls Swimming will be in a co-op with SJPII and CCA. Ellen Gage is the head coach for this team. She is also our assistant Unified Basketball Coach.
- Boys Swimming will be in a co-op with SJPII. Kate LaPlume is the head coach. She is a math teacher here at BHS, as well as the EMT at many of our games.
- The Gymnastics co-op has added Sandwich to the co-op and will be head coached by Shailey Pires. The other schools in the coop are Falmouth and Mashpee.
If you have any questions about this, then please reach out to me via email or stop by my office.
