Mike Anderson Content
Continue your learning about effective teacher talk and teaching to the whole learner by perusing through the binders Mr. Anderson shared with us:
1. Teacher Talk
2. Tackling the Motivation Crisis
One big takeaway I had from his second session was the timing of and directly teaching of strategies for self-management. That concept hit home to me as a dad to a seven year and five year old with whom I spent every single day this summer. I got burnt out, stopped applying all the strategies I would have used with students and just expected them to know better. I even fell into the punishment trap. By the end of July, their acting out seemed like a personal affront. I forgot how, in June, the three of us would prepare before engaging in an activity or transition into something new, discuss how we might feel, how we might react, and what we can do to be in control in the moment. We wouldn't enter a store or a parking lot without those talks. So, Mike Anderson's messaging was what I needed and at a time I could apply it. Student behavior is communication, and rarely is it personal. A new school year is the perfect time to reflect, reset, and go into the hard work with the right mindset and language habits.
