Meeting Recap
The District 146 Board of Education held its regular monthly meeting at 6 p.m. on Monday, March 11 at the Administration Center.
During the meeting, the Board heard from Superintendent Dr. Jeff Stawick:
- Central’s 7th Grade Boys Basketball team won the SWIC Tournament over the weekend and were undefeated this season. Dr. Stawick congratulated the team on their success.
- The District’s Wellness Fair was held on March 2 with more than 100 families and community members in attendance. There were 36 local vendors, and more than 20 speakers for attendees to choose from.
- Parent Teacher Conferences will be held on March 14 from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. Elementary school families schedule conferences with each teacher, while CMS will be hosting open-schedule conferences. Technology will be available for parents who want to complete the 5Essentials Survey while at conferences. Tech support will also be present for parents who need assistance accessing PowerSchool.
- All 19 lights in the Fulton parking lot were recently replaced. The new LED fixtures will provide the District with energy and cost savings.
- New fire-resistant stage curtains have been installed at CMS. The new curtains are blue to match the CMS school colors. These replace the maroon curtains that were 23 years old.
The Board also heard the following:
- Director of Business Services Jeff Charleston presented the five-year financial forecast.
- The President of the Teachers Union gave an update on various activities happening at each of the schools.
- The ESP Union President reported paraprofessionals have been accompanying special education classes on field trips. Many students have been having positive experiences with therapy dogs that have been brought into the schools.
The Board took the following action at the meeting:
- Approved the CMS Roof Restoration Project. Garland/DBS will complete the work at an approximate cost of $1.7 million.
- Approved revisions to the 2024-2025 School Calendar approved at the February Board meeting.
- Approved policy changes that were presented to the Board at the February meeting.
- Approved the two-year special education transportation contract with Sunrise Transportation.
- Approved a $1.9 million property tax abatement. This is the second abatement in the same amount for the Property Tax Relief Grant the district received in 2023.
- Approved a $2 million property tax abatement. This will be the first of two abatements for the 2024 Property Tax Relief Grant.
Following Closed Session, the Board voted to:
- Affirm Dr. Stawick’s decision on UGP Complaint 23-0001.
- Approved the dismissal of a paraprofessional.

Next Board Meeting
The next Board of Education meeting will be held at 6 p.m. on Monday, April 8, 2024. The meeting will be held at the Fierke Education Center, 6535 W. Victoria Drive in Oak Forest.
Did you know?
District 146 has qualified for Illinois' Property Tax Relief Grant (PTRG) for three years in a row. The PTRG requires the District to abate property taxes for two years in exchange for a permanent increase in state funding.
As part of the 2024 PTRG, the District will abate $2 million for each of the next two years. In exchange, the District will receive a permanent $1.4 million increase its Evidence Based Funding.
