CVU Celebrations
November 8, 2024
This week's guest writer is Fairbanks House Director, Arthur Chiaravalli
Dear CVU Community,
This morning's CVU Inspirations ceremony celebrated some of the incredible students who make our CVU community so special. This quarterly tradition recognizes students for their resilience, creativity, kindness, learning, growth, and dedication to others. Teachers and staff nominate students who inspire them and share their stories with the gathered students, caregivers, faculty, and staff. Thank you to everyone who attended, and congratulations once again to our CVU Inspirations! Check out pics in this link and photos in the Student Celebrations section.
Student Council Corner
Happy Friday CVU, this is Ariel! This week, Student Council broke up into groups to plan 4 upcoming events: The Turkey Trot, a NEW Winter Talent Show, an Anti-Bullying campaign and Gratitude Week. The Crystal Skull competition happened on Thursday last week (Halloween) and was a huge success! Thank you to everyone who participated by dressing up or helping to plan logistics. For the Turkey Trot 5K, happening on the first Saturday of Thanksgiving break, we are looking for local businesses to donate prizes to winners in different categories and food for all people racing in the 5k. If you have a connection with a local business that might be willing to donate, we’d appreciate it if you let us know by emailing me (arieltoohey@cvsdvt.org) or Ms. Riley (kriley@cvsdvt.org). Make sure you sign up to run for a free shirt! Additionally, Student Council is excited to announce the development of a new event: a Winter Talent Show. This will be held on January 16th, 2025, with some of your favorite CVU faculty slated to be judges. Start brainstorming, hawks; we want this to have the biggest turnout possible! More information on the Anti-Bullying Campaign and Gratitude Week is coming soon. Have a great weekend!

Might Mudita's seitan is protein packed, and a UVM study found that they emit 75% less greenhouse gases than turkey lunch meat (by weight). Stop by to grab a sandwich, meet the owner, and a chance to win a Might Mudita croc charm!

From Renee Breault: Lauren Vaughan received a Scholar-Athlete award from the Vermont State Athletic Directors Association (VSADA) on November 4th, during the annual Student-Athlete Leadership Conference at the DoubleTree hotel. In order to receive this award you had to have participated in two or more sports at the varsity level for two years, and you had to have certain academic standards to qualify. Lauren also wrote an essay to go with her application, she was 1 of 10 who received the award out of 38 applicants.
Pictured below with Lauren: Coach Tucker Pierson, Charlotte Crum, Apryl Tuiqere, Lauren, Audrey Neilson, Rachel Bialowoz.
From Troy Paradee: KB Aldrich and Allison Mast frequently help stack some of the 200+ chairs after D lunch, they encourage you to find a way to help others and Take Care of the Place!
As part of their NEXUS learning projects in Sustainable Architecture, Lauren Vaughan and Kieran Burke volunteered with the Shelburne Climate & Energy Committee in a Community Build weatherization project in partnership with WindowDressers, a nonprofit based in Maine. During the build at Shelburne Town Hall, volunteers constructed window inserts to help people have warmer homes, save on their heating bills and reduce greenhouse gas emissions, a win-win-win!
From Lydia Eshete: This year, our robotics team has been continuing their work with mentoring the FIRST LEGO League (FLL) Robotics Club at Williston Central School, guiding them through the challenge of the 2024 FLL season. The coaches, James and Clay, along with team members Lydia and Gavin, have been working closely with the Williston students to develop creative ideas and work on the basics of coding and robotics. This year's ocean-themed challenge focuses on global water issues and finding solutions to address ocean-related environmental concerns. Every year, besides designing and coding a robot, teams are given the task of conducting an innovation project which requires them to determine a problem based on the annual theme and create a creative solution to the issue. For their project, the Williston students are focusing on ways to help clean up oil spills in aquatic environments. They have come up with an idea to collect hair by donation to help with the creation of oil-absorbing hair mats, a creative and sustainable solution regarding the impact of oil spills on ecosystems. Students have been working hard with brainstorming, researching & developing this concept, hoping to find more resources to help protect our waters.
