Foundations Certificate

The Certificate includes three two-hour workshops: Exploring Subtle Acts of Exclusion, Implicit Bias, and Cultural Consciousness. The workshops are designed to introduce foundational concepts and encourage reflection. They aim to provide an opportunity to discuss, learn in community, and help build a more inclusive community.
Notes:
Participation in all three workshops in one semester is not required.
The certificate is designed to be completed at an individual pace.
Certificate participants can complete the program over the course of three semesters.
Additional opportunities will be available in the Spring for the same workshops.
Spring 2024 Sessions
Cultural Consciousness: Register HERE
This session aims to deepen self-awareness of our individual cultural self and expand an understanding of others across social categories and a variety of differences. Cultural consciousness can be defined as the process of developing awareness of culture in the self, which can result in expanding understanding of culture and developing deeper cultural knowledge about other individuals and contexts.
Implicit Bias (Unconscious Bias): Register HERE
This interactive session will explore unconscious bias: what it is, how it forms, how it can affect ourselves and our peers, and what we can do to mitigate our own unconscious biases moving forward.
Exploring Subtle Acts of Exclusion (Microaggressions): Register HERE
Explore the ways subtle acts of exclusion can impact communities. This workshop dives deep into the definition of subtle acts of exclusion, equips participants with an understanding of what can be a subtle act of exclusion, what to do when we experience one, and what to do if someone tells us we have enacted one. It offers tools to plan out interventions and/or hold ourselves accountable when faced with subtle acts of exclusion.
DEI Student Collective
The student collective is a collaboration between the Coordinator and Special Assistant to the President for Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion, in addition to the Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Belonging Student Government Chair. Originally, this group was established to provide a platform for organizations with a focus on social justice or identity-related issues to express concerns and propose programming ideas. Since its establishment in the Fall of 2022, the group has expanded its scope to include networking opportunities for organizations and a mechanism for coordinating programming to better support various initiatives from different organizations, fostering a more cohesive and supportive community.
If you are interested in partnering with the student collective for Spring programs and please contact DEIB Chair: Ella Cannon ebcannon@email.meredith.edu
Unity Pop Up
The Unity Pop Up is a collaborative effort between the Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) Coordinator, campus partners, and student organizations. This initiative aims to create a visible and engaging presence for students on the second floor of Cate every Wednesday (10 a.m.–1 p.m.). The primary goals of the Unity Pop-Up include:
Highlighting Student Organizations: It aims to serve as a platform to showcase various student organizations, fostering awareness of their missions and activities.
Bringing Students Together: The Unity Pop-Up encourages students to come together, fostering a sense of community and inclusivity.
Sharing Information: The collaborative effort involves disseminating valuable information related to diversity, equity, and inclusion. This can include updates on campus initiatives, resources, and upcoming events, contributing to an informed and engaged student body.
