Dear Families,

We are happy it is April and we are halfway done with this cold and snowy month. I heard it is the 2nd coldest April in Anchorage. We have come far this year and most students have completed their Ak Star assessment. Way to go to our testing team coordinators; Ms. Donnell and Ms. Victoria with our Assistant Principal Ms. Garney making sure this ran as smoothly as possible. The students did their best. We had a fabulous Hollywood themed school dance that PTA supported with some pretty awesome parents and staff….extra shout out to Crystal, Dani, and Trudy. A lot of planning went into this and many families were able to take part in this fun event. Then we had our Teen and Tech Ice Cream social this past Thursday evening. We learned about online safety and how much time most kids spend on their devices. We loved hearing from the tweens and their parents. Thank you all for participating and sharing. As mentioned last month, we have a lot of upcoming after school opportunities, school field trips, and ending the last couple weeks with participation in the Heart Run and our fun outdoor field day. We hope that you stay connected with your child's teacher and come participate in some or all activities we have at Lake Hood. Our next family event is our STEM Science Night on Friday April 21st, 2023 from 6-8pm. Also, anyone interested in sharing their culture, their food, and their family traditions please consider being part of multicultural night Friday May 12th. Please look at the flyer attached and respond if interested.

Principal Tips:

Come to school every day and be on time. Make sure students are sharing what they are learning in their classes, getting a good night's rest (8-10 hrs.), and spending time outside getting some fresh air away from TV and other devices.

Warmer weather is quickly approaching, and our daylight is also increasing! Here's an article from the American Academy of Pediatrics about the amount of sleep kids need at different ages. Every child is different, so this tool is a guideline on what to look for regarding how your child is doing. The American Academy of Sleep Medicine (AASM) provides some helpful guidelines regarding just how much sleep children need at different stages of their development. Keep in mind that these numbers reflect total sleep hours in 24 hours.

• The Alaska Orff Chapter will offer Children's Music Camp July 10 - 14 from 9:00 to 12:00. Registration is open. This is such a worthwhile camp. We are looking for volunteers to run the School Store on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 8:40-9:00. We will train you! Please stop by the library or email McMullen_Trudy@asdk12.org for more information.

We would love to have Popcorn Fridays again at Lake Hood! We need 1-2 volunteers every Friday for about 2-3 hours. We will train you! Please stop by the library or email McMullen_Trudy@asdk12.org for more information.

If your child will be absent or will be gone for an extended period of time, let us know. Attendance is important and when students are gone they miss valuable learning opportunities.

All students go to recess. This is a time for students to have unstructured time outside away from classwork. Please remind them to be kind, take turns, and keep their hands to themselves. Most students are doing a great job, thanks!! Some students need multiple reminders and will need to stand on the wall if they can’t follow our recess expectations. If your child is not well enough to go outside they will need a doctor's note, otherwise they will go outside for recess.

Just a reminder that students can not have lunch delivered from services such as Door Dash or GrubHub. Thank you!
