Message from the Superintendent
Dear Roller Families,
As we approach the end of this marking period, I encourage each student to give their best effort and finish strong. Let's work together to ensure that our children have the support they need to achieve their academic goals. Your continued involvement in their school life, whether it's through checking in on their progress, assisting with homework, or simply offering a word of encouragement, makes a significant difference in their success. Let's keep our lines of communication open as we strive for academic excellence together. Thank you for your commitment to our students' growth and success.
Mick Iskric, Jr, Ed.D.

Senior Day Recognition
Last week, senior athletes and band members were recognized during their final home game events. Congrats to all of our seniors!
Super Reader Visits Kindergarten Classes
On the 24th of October, Mr. Floyd Stokes, who is also affectionately known as "Super Reader," generously visited our Kindergarten classes. He delighted our students by reading a selection of his own authored books. The children thoroughly enjoyed the experience, actively engaging with him as he brought his stories to life.
Stokes is a familiar face in the Harrisburg area, having visited schools, early learning centers and community events for the past 25 years. In 2001, he founded the American Literacy Corporation. According to the ALC website, “The purpose of the ALC is to design and implement supplemental literacy programs to promote the importance of learning to elementary school students mostly grades K-5. Since the founding of the ALC in January 2001, the ALC has read to over 250,000 children.”
He's been a cherished participant in our annual elementary Literacy Night, where he not only reads to our students but also generously distributes his books. We eagerly look forward to his presence at our Literacy Night this year.
Students Visit AP WIlliams Construction
On Thursday, October 19th, 2023, seniors Bryce Madden, Ahmed Hasson, and Elijah Wright, along with sophomores Aiden Johnson and Michael Smith, under the supervision of Transition Coordinator, Mrs. Michelle Warner, embarked on a visit to AP Williams Construction to explore an active construction site. During this educational excursion, the students gained insights into the various roles and duties within the construction industry.
Furthermore, the students discovered that the construction sector is currently facing a critical shortage of dedicated, dependable individuals. AP Williams also offers opportunities such as internships, co-op programs, and job shadowing, providing valuable prospects for students interested in pursuing careers in this field.
The students thoroughly enjoyed their experience at the construction site, making it a memorable and informative outing.

Staff Spotlight - JD McFall & Patty
Elementary Dean of Students, JD McFall and his therapy dog, Patty are familiar faces to students, staff and families at the elementary school. This dynamic duo made their debut there in December of 2021. McFall, a Steelton alum (Class of 2005) joined the district staff first as a substitute and then as a PBIS team member from 2009-2013. He then transitioned into the position of Dean of Students at the Jr/Sr High school and finally to the elementary building in the same position in August of 2021.
In April of 2021, McFall was in the process of looking for a dog to adopt and met Patty, who was being housed at the Humane Society of Harrisburg. Patty was adopted and their journey to certifying her as a Therapy Dog began. While speaking with McFall, he noted that he had not initially planned to set out on this path, and that it, in fact, came about through a chance meeting while on a public outing.
JD and Patty were visiting a Harrisburg area establishment and caught the eye of a dog trainer, Carolyn Dumaresq, who recognized their potential to be a great therapy dog team. Ironically, Dumaresq also happened to be familiar with Steelton-Highspire School District, having previously served as its superintendent.
Dumaresq is a trainer with the Dauphin Dog Training Club where Patty received 6 weeks of training and upon successful completion of the program, received her K9 Good Citizen designation. From this point, McFall contacted Bright & Beautiful Therapy Dogs and embarked on the rigorous process of having Patty certified as a Therapy Dog. After becoming a nationally registered Therapy Dog, with the support of elementary principal Megan Armstead, having Patty join McFall at the elementary building to provide Therapy Dog services was proposed before the school board and passed unanimously.
Patty visits the building three times a week, visiting classrooms, and supporting students and staff throughout their daily routines. She is a welcome sight for students who may be going through a difficult time or need help de-escalating from a stressful situation. The positive impact that Patty’s presence has had on students is palpable. Both she and McFall make a great team and we are so thankful for the additional support they are able to provide.
