News & Notes from Josiah Haynes Elementary School

Principal's Message
It has been wonderful seeing many of you coming and going from your parent/teacher conferences. I hope the time learning and sharing has been as informative, productive and rewarding for you as it is for us.
At the beginning of the year I shared that one of our focused efforts this year would be the development of a Haynes School Vision Statement. In doing so, we’re identifying the future we want to create, solidifying our values and naming our priorities. The process draws out our core values, invites community conversation, surfaces ideas and challenges assumptions.
To date, Haynes educators have engaged in the first of three exercises as part of this work. Parents have participated in two Principal Coffees with an eye toward visioning. In addition, our School Council and HOP leadership have offered feedback on the process.
Now, I want to hear from you. I invite you to share your thoughts on our priorities by completing our survey, Visioning the Future of Haynes. The survey will be open now through Thanksgiving. Please take a few moments to share your views and ideas. Your take is invaluable and essential to this process.
I look forward to hearing from you!
Sincerely,
Jeff LaBroad
Principal

Friday Afternoon Dismissal Reminder
Friday School Meeting is a wonderful opportunity for families to come visit Haynes School and see students participate in various programs/performances. When planning your visit to Haynes School on a Friday afternoon, please factor in extra time to follow our sign in/sign out procedures in the front office. If you wish to dismiss your student(s) following school meeting, please be advised all children will return to their classrooms and front office staff will then call the classroom teacher to request your children be sent to the office to meet you. This procedure allows us to properly track who is leaving school in an orderly fashion. We appreciate your cooperation. Friday afternoons are very busy in our front office following school meeting, as this is the time we begin focusing on a safe dismissal for all students.

Did You Know...?
Have you ever wondered about the steel sculpture in one of the front gardens at Haynes?
"Guard at the Gate" was sculpted in 1975 by Dovber Marchette and has greeted visitors to Haynes for more than 40 years! Marchette lived in Sudbury for 14 years and was the Director of Cultural Affairs and very active in the arts in the town including as artist in residence for the town in 1978 after having held the same position at the Boston Museum of Fine Art the year before.
Chess Club Sign-Ups Now Available
Submitted by Valerie Harding
Join us for the Fall semester of Josiah Haynes' popular Chess club taught by Chess master Dmitri Frenklakh. Any level and age are welcome!
This Fall semester runs 8-weeks every Wednesday from 7:45 am - 8:45 am, starting November 20th and ending on January 22, 2020. Fee for the semester is $150 (checks to be made payable to Dmitry Frenklakh and kindly bring your checks to the first Chess Club session on November 20th).
Our Chess club provides children with a solid foundation on which to build and grow their skills of visualization and deductive reasoning. We have all ages from kindergarten to 5th grade. A child who is introduced to chess at a young age is likely to do better in school for years to come. Research shows that playing chess improves a child’s thinking, problem-solving, reading, and math scores. Educators and chess experts generally agree the first grade is the ideal time to introduce children to chess, although some as young as four or five may be ready to learn and play. It really helps children in building self-confidence. We hope to have your child join us!
Payment is due at the first class on November 20th, 2019. Please remember to make a check out to Dmitri Frenklakh. If you have any questions or for further information, please contact Dmitri Frenklakh by email dima.frank@gmail.com or if you have any questions, please call him at (617) 823-6865.
