Elsie Rogers Express
March 2022
Hello Roadrunner Families,
I hope that everyone is enjoying the community read of The One and Only Ivan. If you have not had converstaion with your child about the text I encourage you to do so! We've made enjoying this book easy for you as a family with our online read aloud option. I invite you to check out this LINK to hear a variety of celebrity readers tell this story!
Our 3rd graders are currently in the middle of taking the IREAD-3, the statewide assessment that measures foundational reading skills students have acquired through grade 3. IREAD-3 is a multiple choice summative assessment made up of three segments that help determine if students have achieved the reading skills necessary for grade 4. Results of the test will be made available toward the end of March.
Our next big statewide assessment comes in April with ILEARN. During the month of March, and into April, our students in grades 3 through 5 will continue to prepare for this standardized test. Elsie Rogers will administer this assessment beginning April 18. Individual teachers will send their class's testing scheudle in the near future.
Please do not schedule appointments during testing dates. It is disruptive to your child to take them out of school on a date that is scheduled for a test unless it is a time-sensitive issue related to their health. There will be no days excused for family vacations during testing dates. It should also be noted that prompt arrival is necessary on testing days. If your child is tardy to school and testing has begun, your child will be asked to sit in the office until the testing is completed in their classroom. We greatly appreciate your help with this. Our goal is 100% attendance during these days!
A reminder that if your child has been recommended for summer school by their teacher, you have already received a summer school form via an email to complete electronically. Please complete this form as soon as possible. If you have any questions, feel free to reach out to your child's teacher or to me.

4th Grade Elsie Rogers teacher, Amanda Fox, receives U.S. Presidential award for Math Teaching
Mrs. Amanda Fox, 4th grade teacher at Elsie Rogers, was notified recently that she had been selected to receive a Presidential Award for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching (PAEMST). Click here to read the White House news release. This is the highest honor bestowed by the United States to K-12 science, technology, engineering, mathematics, and/or computer science teachers. President Joe Biden named 117 teachers and Mrs. Fox was among the national winners!
Mrs. Fox was chosen in December 2020 as the State's only PAEMST finalist in math. At the time Mrs. Fox was a 3rd grade teacher at Prairie Vista and had expanded the after-school coding courses at Prairie Vista. She also worked over the summers with the ND Department of Computer Science & Engineering on various research efforts funded by the National Science Foundation (NSF). The NSF grants funded a K-6 ND computer science summer program, as well as her Prairie Vista after-school coding classes. Mrs. Fox was among the first cohort of teachers to help K-8 teachers develop age-appropriate curriculum to introduce students to computer science within existing STEM curricula. Notre Dame Professor Michael T. Niemier praised Ms. Fox for mentoring other area teachers. Mrs. Fox also helped create content for K-8 students in various local school districts other than just P-H-M. Click here to learn more about Mrs. Fox's background. She’s also established a northern Indiana chapter of the Computer Science Teachers Association (CSTA).
Recipients of the PAEMST receive the following:
- A certificate signed by the President of the United States.
- A paid trip to Washington, D.C., to attend a series of recognition events and professional development opportunities.
- A $10,000 award from the National Science Foundation.
Congratulations Amanda - Elsie Rogers is proud of you and so happy you are teaching at Elsie Rogers!
