A Note from our EL Teacher
Create the Need - If there is a need to use a language, then children will use it. Creating that need is key. For bilingual parents this can sometimes be a struggle, especially for the parent speaking the minority language. If your child knows you speak a second language, they may realize they don’t “need” to speak their native or second language for you to understand them. Create expectations for your children and help them know which language to speak and when. Students have set routines at school to help them know what the expectations are in their classroom. One example for home is to set an expectation that your family only speaks your native language during dinner time. This shows your child what to expect and creates a routine. Consistency is key with creating a need.
Watch for a Notification on October 28th- BRIGHT ARROW
- Our BrightArrow notification system enables you to stay in touch in the event of emergencies, delays/cancellations, and other important events throughout the school year. In order for you to be able to receive these notifications, it is vital that you keep your contact information accurate and up to date with your child’s school.
- You can confirm and/or request to update your contact information by contacting your student's school. We encourage you to take a minute to make sure your contact information is up-to-date so you don't miss out on important notifications.
To Receive Text Alerts
- You must have your mobile phone number on file with your child’s school to receive text messages. (If you’re not certain whether you’ve done this, please contact your child’s school.)
- To opt in to text messages send the word Yes to the shortcode 79041. Once you opt-in, BrightArrow will send you a confirmation that your phone number is subscribed.
- After opting in, you should be receiving text messages along with email notifications. If you still are not receiving text messages (only email) please contact your child’s school to update your telephone number.
HALLOWEEN at MG
Halloween will be celebrated at MG on Thursday, October 31st. If a student wishes to dress up in a costume they must BRING the costume to school. Students are not allowed to wear the costume to school in the morning. All students must be able to put on a take off their costume independently.
Masks are allowed. Anything weapon-like is not allowed.
There are not classroom parties on this day. If parents would like to view the parade, it will begin at 2:00pm and run along the front bus lane as well as across the blacktop by the playground. There is no need to enter the building. We will come outside for the parade and pass by everyone.
Dia de los muertos Event
We are inviting all families to participate in our annual Dia de los Muertos event at Mechanics Grove on November 4th at 6:00-7:30. The event will include light snacks, music, crafts, and lots of fun. Please RSVP here if you would like to attend: Día de los Muertos

A Note from Our Social Workers
You teach your child so much every day! But, it can be challenging and even embarrassing to talk about every topic. Your student wants to learn more about tough situations, you can be a resource for them. In October every student learned about personal safety during Erin’s Law presentations in 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade, so they might ask you some tricky questions. More information about personal safety and child lures is available in the Erin’s Law link.
Discussing tough topics can feel overwhelming and you might not know what to say. Thankfully, books can help! Friendship challenges, coping with stress, changes in the family? Don’t worry; there is a book on every tough topic. Checking out a book, reading it together and talking it through is a great way to make those tricky conversations go smoothly. If you don’t know how to pick a book, you can ask the librarian at your local Library. You can also check a book list for the topic you want to chat about. Most books are available on YouTube as a read-aloud. If you want those conversations to be even more meaningful, take a look at our August tips for how to develop emotional intelligence with storytime.
